Описание: In the last two decades, our knowledge on regulatory peptides and their cognate receptors, most of which are members of the seven transmembrane receptor families, has increased enormously. Regulatory peptides are small proteins which, besides their hormonal functions in regulating cellular metabolism in various tissues, may also act as neurotransmitters, and thus they often carry the prefix "neuro". Many of the cognate receptors involved in transducing the peptidergic signal across the cell membrane via a family of G proteins exist in multiple forms, the number of which frequently exceeds that of the corresponding peptide ligands. In this book, various peptide-receptor systems are discussed, e.g. CRF, somatostatin, TRH, opioid peptides, vasopressin, and oxytocin. It also discusses new strategies such as "reverse physiology" to uncover new peptides and orphan receptors.

Описание: Luckily, the parking lot only deleted footage every three months because of the relatively heavy flow of tourism that took place at Cramond Ghost Island during the summer months. The old man in charge of the parking lot security cameras asked us why we needed the footage. Ethan told him that I met someone there at noon on a Saturday in July and that the police needed to verify that this meeting took place on that date. The old man had to review footage of the four Saturdays in July. He grumbled as he escorted us to a small viewing room at the rear end of the parking lot. Ethan and I sat down next to the old man as he began his search. He

Human cells produce at least 30,000 different proteins. Each has a specific function characterized by a unique sequence and native conformation that allows it to perform that function. While research in this post-genomic era has created a deluge of invaluable information, the field has lacked for an authoritative introductory text needed to inform researchers and students in all of those fields now concerned with protein research.
Introduction to Peptides and Proteins brings together some of the most respected researchers in protein science to present a remarkably coherent introduction to modern peptide and protein chemistry. The first sections of the book delve into -
Basic peptide and protein science from assembly through degradation
Traditional and emerging research methods including those used in bioinformatics and proteomics
New computational approaches and algorithms used to find patterns in the vast data collected by sequencing projects
After providing a foundation in tools and methods, the authors closely examine six protein families, including representative classes such as enzymes, cell-surface receptors, antibodies, fibrous proteins, and bioactive peptide classes. They concentrate on biochemical mechanisms and where possible indicate therapeutic or biotechnical possibilities.
Then focusing on clinical aspects, the authors investigate misfolding as found in prion diseases, miscleavage as found in Alzheimer's, and mis-sequencing as found with some cancers. Drawing from some of their own research, the authors summarize recent achievements and emerging applications. They discuss the use of proteins and peptides as drugs and the solid-phase synthesis required for drug production. They also look at the use of peptides as functional biomolecules and research tools.

Описание: A. , FADEN, K. KRAFr, and K. O. STUMPE Following the discovery of the pentapeptide enkephalins in 1975, a number of endogenous opioid peptides and opiate receptors have been identified. Endogenous opioids and opiate-receptor mechanisms have been implicated in a variety of regulat- ory and dysregulatory functions including analgesia, cardiovascular regulation, shock, hypertension, traumatic spinal cord and brain injury, stroke, immune func- tion, feeding behavior, diuresis, gastrointestinal motility, and respiratory control, among others. Over the past 10 years, many studies have demonstrated a relationship between endogenous opioids and the cardiovascular system under both homeostatic and pathophysiological conditions. Opioids and opiate receptors have been found in various cardioregulatory sites within the brain and spinal cord, as well as in peripheral tissues such as sympathetic ganglia, adrenal gland, and heart. Both endogenous opioids and exogenous opiates have been shown to produce potent cardiovascular effects following central nervous system or systemic administration. Opiate-receptor antagonists have been demonstrated to reverse hypotension from sepsis, hypo- volemia, and anaphylaxis; such studies have been used to infer activity of endogenous opioid systems in shock. Changes in tissue concentrations of endogenous opioids and or opiate receptors have been found after shock and hypertension, further implying a role for opioid systems in the etiology of these conditions. In addition, modification of opiate receptor regulation, receptor binding, or opioid metabolism has also been used to establish a potential role for endogenous opioid systems in cardiovascular control and dyscontrol.
