Описание: This book examines the process by which government leaders perceive events and use information in making foreign policy decisions. In his case study of the Sino-Indian conflict, the author explores the attitudes that shaped India’s policy toward China and traces the network of misunderstandings that led to a war unwanted by both sides. Taking into account technical, organizational, cultural, group-dynamic, and key personality variables, Dr. Vertzberger discusses the Sino-Indian conflict within a global and regional systems perspective and describes what was at stake in the conflict from the point of view of each country involved. Subsequent chapters analyze Nehru’s view of India’s role, the influence of national public opinion in shaping Nehru’s attitudes, the perceived relationships between Sino-Indian interactions and India’s relations with its neighbors, and India’s evaluation of the balance of power between itself and China. One section of the book focuses on India’s intelligence community and the mishandling of information that led to a failure of signaling efforts on both sides. Cultural differences between China and India, Nehru’s personality and style of leadership, and the role of major organizations such as the army, various ministries, and Parliament are also assessed in terms of their impact on the conflict.

Описание: Public service advertising can be a powerful and effective tool for awareness and education in helping both the public and specific target audiences learn more about urgent health issues. Given the recognition intimate partner violence has gained in the last two decades as an urgent health problem around the world, this issue was selected to explore advertisings effect and potential to help a specific target audience. This research examined female survivors impressions of domestic violence campaigns. A sample of 16 focus groups of approximately six women in two-hour sessions were conducted, at two different points in time over the past two decades. These focus groups included a fairly equal number of African-American, White, Asian, and Latino women in two different geographic areas of the country. Participants were asked to describe their opinions about a sampling of current domestic violence campaign material. The women who participated expressed heightened negative emotional responses to specific elements of some of the advertising, suggesting the potential of some campaigns to exacerbate the problem for this target group. The purpose of this research was to formulate a base of information to create improved public service advertising for this segment of the public, as they are the group most severely affected by this issue. Thus, based on the Editors research and the participants responses, the key goal for an improved campaign should be enhancing early identification, empowerment, and help-seeking behaviour.
First published in 1991, this title explores the myths and misperceptions that have underpinned Muslim-Christian relations throughout history, and which endure to the current day. William Montgomery Watt describes how the myths originated and developed, and argues that both Muslims and Christians need to have a more accurate knowledge and positive appreciation of the other religion. Chapters discuss the Qur'anic perception of Christianity, attitudes to Greek philosophy and the relationship between Islam and Christianity in medieval Europe. Written by one of the leading authorities on Islam in the West, Muslim-Christian Encounters remains a relevant and vivid study and will be of particular value to students of Islam, religious history and sociology.

China's rise to great-power status is one of the most significant issues of the twenty-first century. Will the People's Republic be able to complete this process peacefully? And what are the security, economic and governance implications for the rest of the world?
The majority of scholars approach these questions from one of two perspectives: competitive security and power (realism) or complementary economic self-interest (liberalism). In this book, Christopher Herrick, Zheya Gai and Surain Subramaniam offer a constructivist alternative, arguing that China's prospects for achieving great-power status peacefully depend more on domestic and international perceptions of the country's rise - perceptions rooted in such factors as historical experience and national image.
Early chapters explore the Chinese mindset and historical experience, as well as foreign attitudes to China and applicable international relations theory. The authors then proceed to look at three dimensions of Chinese policy - security, economics and governance - situating them within the context of China's relations with Asian neighbours (India, Japan and the states of Southeast Asia), existing international powers (the European Union, Russia and the United States) and emergent trading partners (Africa). At the heart of the book is an analysis of how increased economically beneficial trade with China affects historically based negative perceptions.
Accessible enough for undergraduates but full of material that will challenge academics and policymakers, China's peaceful rise is essential reading for those with interests in Chinese foreign policy, East Asia and international relations.

Описание: Can Iranians and Americans find common ground to overcome their troubled history? U.S.-Iran Misperceptions is the first written dialogue on the key issues that separate these two great countries. Bringing together former policy makers and international relations experts from the United States and Iran, U.S.-Iran Misperceptions: A Dialogue provides new insights into and arguments about how each country’s elites view the other, and how misperceptions have blocked the two from forging a normal and productive relationship. Guided by the leading theorist of misperceptions in international relations, Columbia University Professor Robert Jervis, the book moves from Jervis’s opening essay to consider mutual perceptions of ideology, nuclear weapons, neo-imperialism, regional hegemony, and the future of the relationship. It presents authoritative, clear-eyed assessments, while seeking plausible ways the two countries can avoid a catastrophic war and rebuild the relationship. U.S.-Iran Misperceptions: A Dialogue offers uncompromising analysis and cautious optimism.
