Описание: One message that comes along with ever-improving fertility treatments and increasing acceptance of single motherhood, older first-time mothers, and same-sex partnerships, is that almost any woman can and should become a mother. But the majority of women who struggle with fertility avoid treatment. The women whose interviews appear in Not Trying belong to this majority.

Описание: Editors Lewiecki-Wilson and Cellio have put together the first book to focus on the intersecting spaces, both cultural and personal, of disability and mothering. Derived from the Latin for threshold, the word "liminal" calls attention to the book’s focus on the transitional moments and spaces where the personal and social, inside and outside, self and other converge. The volume features twenty-one previously unpublished essays by new as well as established scholars and community activists. Contributors, some of whom are themselves disabled or mothers of children with disabilities, present moving personal accounts and accessible scholarship grounded in historical study, experiential and retrospective analysis, interviews, social research, and feminist and disability studies theories. In their introduction, the editors survey the theoretical frameworks of feminism and disability studies, locating the points of overlap crucial to a study of disability and mothering. Organized in five sections, the book engages questions about reproductive technologies; diagnoses and cultural scripts; the ability to rewrite narratives of mothering and disability; political activism; and the tensions formed by the overlapping identities of race, class, nation, and disability. The essays speak to a broad audience—from undergraduate and graduate students in women’s studies and disability studies, to therapeutic and health care professionals, to anyone grappling with issues such as genetic testing and counseling, raising a child with a disability, or being disabled and contemplating starting a family.

This collection interrogates the ways in which the emerging interdisciplinary study of care challenges and provokes a reassessment of the points of connection and disjuncture between care and governance, ethics and public, personal and professional identities.
The volume emerges from a project coordinated by the Cambridge Socio-Legal Group. It brings together leading international scholars to discern and articulate what we may consider to be a useful analytic of care. Lawyers, anthropologists, sociologists and criminologists reflect on specific aspects of conceptualising caring relations in 'spaces' including communities of care and abandonment, self-care and kinship care, spaces as 'gaps' in care, the meanings of marketised care, and the ways in which care is constructed and constrained in different ways in venues such as homes, prisons, workplaces and virtual spaces.
Common themes cut across the chapters. These include: temporality (historical specificity) and the dynamics of care across time and place; subjectivity - are intentions of care experienced in that way? What does care feel like?; the economies of care (including the commodification of care; public and private manifestations of care; privatised 'care'); disruptions of care - which generate vulnerabilities with regards to continuities of care; eligibility - those deemed to be deserving and undeserving of care; relationalities of care (collective and individual agency in caring relations, kinship care), and technologies and imaginaries of care - as in new notions of care forged by those in online virtual worlds such as Second Life.

Автор: Francis Ara Название: Family Trouble: Middle-Class Parents, Children`s Problems, and the Disruption of Everyday Life ISBN: 0813570522 ISBN-13(EAN): 9780813570525 Издательство: Mare Nostrum (Eurospan) Рейтинг: Цена: 32560.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: Our children mean the world to us. They are so central to our hopes and dreams that we will do almost anything to keep them healthy, happy, and safe. What happens, then, when a child has serious problems? In Family Trouble, a compelling portrait of upheaval in family life, sociologist Ara Francis tells the stories of middle-class men and women whose children face significant medical, psychological, and social challenges. Francis interviewed the mothers and fathers of children with such problems as depression, bi-polar disorder, autism, learning disabilities, drug addiction, alcoholism, fetal alcohol syndrome, and cerebral palsy. Children’s problems, she finds, profoundly upset the foundations of parents’ everyday lives, overturning taken-for-granted expectations, daily routines, and personal relationships. Indeed, these problems initiated a chain of disruption that moved through parents’ lives in domino-like fashion, culminating in a crisis characterized by uncertainty, loneliness, guilt, grief, and anxiety. Francis looks at how mothers and fathers often differ in their interpretation of a child’s condition, discusses the gendered nature of child rearing, and describes how parents struggle to find effective treatments and to successfully navigate medical and educational bureaucracies. But above all, Family Trouble examines how children’s problems disrupt middle-class dreams of the “normal” family. It captures how children’s problems “radiate” and spill over into other areas of parents’ lives, wreaking havoc even on their identities, leading them to reevaluate deeply held assumptions about their own sense of self and what it means to achieve the good life. Engagingly written, Family Trouble offers insight to professionals and solace to parents. The book offers a clear message to anyone in the throes of family trouble: you are in good company, and you are not as different as you might feel...
TELL ME THE NUMBER BEFORE INFINITY, THE STORY OF A GIRL WITH A QUIRKY MIND, AN ECCENTRIC FAMILY, AND OH YES, A DISABILITY in 60 short chapters arranged chronologically from two distinct perspectives, is about Becky Taylor, from her birth in 1972 to age forty.
The authors, Becky Taylor, mathematical whiz, who has cerebral palsy and a B.S. in Computer Science, and her mother, Dena Taylor, M.S.W., who raised her, describe life in their family and the realities of having a disability. Most of the chapters were written at the time they happened, so the reader truly gets a sense of what it was like for Becky, her sister and her mom while she was growing up.
Included are photos and newspaper clippings from throughout Becky's life.
Although several books on disabilities already exist, the use of two narrations is unique.
The title is Becky's answer to her father's question to her as to whether infinity is an odd or an even number. She was four years old at the time, the same age as she was in the cover photo.
The Taylors' pivotal action hugely contributed to California's historical mainstreaming of disabled children into the public school system. Parents, teachers, people with disabilities, people who know and work with people with disabilities, those curious about how a child's mind works, and even brain researchers will find Tell Me the Number before Infinity an honest, moving, informative, often funny and inspiring account of a girl's and her mother's journey.
