Описание: The author, a clinical social worker, tells the story of how her personal and professional life was disrupted when she was struck by a car and sustained a traumatic brain injury. She describes how the injury impacted her physically, emotionally, and spiritually, and recounts her struggles to resume a meaningful life in the face of medical, financial, insurance, and legal problems."Days of Daze is a book of hope. When hit by a car during a noontime walk, the author, in a split second, loses her health, her job, and her image of herself as an intelligent and capable human being. As she struggles with the myriad complexities of her medical situation, she discovers a place within her that touches the divine, sustains her in hours of darkness, and illuminates the pathways of vibrant living. I highly recommend this gentle, gracious, and very readable book for anyone facing the uncertainties and complexities of life. Actually, I recommend it for everyone."--Reverend James McConnell, South Bend, Indiana"Days of Daze provides us with a source of encouragement in the journey through the great difficulty and frustration of traumatic brain injury. The author reveals to us her coping skills and her growing inner courage as she shares her struggle with the perceived setbacks in the process of therapeutic acceptance."--Matthew Davis, M.D., psychiatrist, South Bend, Indiana"Days of Daze shows how encountering a serious physical injury can be a profoundly enriching growth experience. It demonstrates that a well-lived life fully accepts each painful circumstance."--Judy Cassidy, Poet, Stevensville, Michigan

Описание: Sometimes life doesn't always unfold the way you plan. On July 20, 1984 while at USMC Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia, a young Marine was a passenger in a three-ton troop transport vehicle that, while traveling at sixty-five miles per hour, flipped and rolled several times, finally coming to rest upside down. Several Marines were dead, but one man was still alive. He was Terry Smith.

After dying twice during brain surgery on that fateful day, Terry Smith has since learned to adjust to the limitations that accompany Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). At Bethesda Naval Hospital, Terry learned to walk, talk, eat, think, and live again, but learning to cope with seizures, anxiety, insomnia, paranoia, and memory loss did not happen overnight-or even after two decades. It is only through years of trial and error that Terry has learned to make the transition from pre-TBI to post-TBI, proving that the healing process is never-ending for head trauma patients.

Terry Smith is a true survivor who has defied the odds. Today he shares his inspirational story of hope for the future for TBI patients, their families, doctors, and anyone who has insurmountable obstacles to overcome.

Описание: Psychopharmacological treatment of children and adolescents is a rapidly evolving field. It has become clear that a "psychopharmacological way of thinking" provides a useful model for explaining the nature of disorders to children and their families. For the clinician, a similar approach helps explain why, when, what and how to proscribe more logical. When the psychopharmacology and neurochemistry involved are understood, the choice of drug or therapy for each child is less daunting. Treatment can be tailored to specific symptoms and disease profiles, with side effects anticipated and explained. This book provides the information clinicians need to make informed choices in this complex field.

Описание: The Department of Defense (DOD) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Veterans Health Administration (VHA) have collaborated to develop clinical practice guidelines for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and mild traumatic brain injury (TBI). Medication continuation, when clinically appropriate, is critical for transitioning servicemembers with PTSD or TBI who have been prescribed psychiatric, pain, or sleep medications. Adverse health effects may occur if these medications are inappropriately discontinued. This book examines the extent to which DOD and VHA developed and monitored recommended medication practices for PTSD and TBI; the extent to which psychiatric, pain, and sleep medications on DODs formulary are on VAs formulary, and how differences might affect medication continuation; and key efforts VHA has to help ensure medication continuation, and the extent it is monitoring these efforts.
