Описание: Originally built in 1844 and rebuilt in 1907 after being gutted by fire during the 1903 water riots, the Red House has been the seat of Trinidad and Tobago’s parliament for over one hundred years. As a result of archaeological discoveries made in the basement of the Red House in March–April 2013, the Office of the Parliament of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago hired Basil A. Reid and his archaeological crew of local and international scholars to undertake a detailed study of the site from July 2013 to January 2015.The archaeological data suggest that centuries before the Red House building was originally constructed, a relatively large native community (comprised of the Saladoid and their descendants) lived continuously at the site for over one thousand years. Featured in the volume are significant findings relating to the biological profiles, DNA, diet and subsistence, mobility, and ceramic technology of these precolonial natives. This work showcases a diverse collection of both precolonial and colonial-period artefacts; the role of the site’s precolonial inhabitants as dynamic, self-reflexive history makers; and the colonial history of the Red House from earliest times to 1907. The volume advances our understanding of processes of (de)colonisation as a set of multidirectional processes. The term ‘(de)colonisation’ encapsulates the multiplicity of processes of colonisation that are advancing and receding simultaneously across various contexts. This work represents an ambitious project to integrate a range of perspectives on continuing processes of (de)colonisation. Eminent historians of enslavement, Geoffrey Cubitt and Laurajane Smith, have recently highlighted the urgent need to include the contributions of practitioners in academic discussions concerning race (2011). With a similar ethos, the chapters in this volume represent a conversation between academics, the interested public, and community activists to promote a more democratic and publicly engaged analysis of decolonisation and Caribbean migration. To this end, the editors have decided to include the contributions of practitioners alongside chapters by academics. These chapters, shorter in length that the academic pieces, provide forceful and scholarly critiques of experiences of migration and (de)colonisation. Taken together, the chapters thus illustrate the importance and validity of collaboration between the academy and the interested public.

Much anthropological and public discussion remains embedded in traditionalizing views of indigenous people, and in accounts that seem to underline essential and apparently timeless difference. In this volume the editors and contributors assume that “the person” is socially defined and reconfigured as contexts change, both immediate and historical.Essays in this collection are grounded in Australian locales commonly termed “remote.” These indigenous communities were largely established as residential concentrations by Australian governments, some first as missions, most in areas that many of the indigenous people involved consider their homelands. A number of these settlements were located in proximity to settler industries including pastoralism, market-gardening, and mining.These are the locales that many non-indigenous Australians think of as the homes of the most traditional indigenous communities and people. The contributors discuss the changing circumstances of indigenous people who originate from such places. Some remain, while others travel far afield. The accounts reveal a diversity of experiences and histories that involve major dynamics of disembedding from country and home locales, and re-embedding in new contexts, and reconfigurations of relatedness. The essays explore dimensions of change and continuity in childhood experience and socialization in a desert community; the influence of Christianity in fostering both individuation and relatedness in northeast Arnhem Land; the diaspora of Central Australian Warlpiri people to cities and the forms of life and livelihood they make there; adolescent experiences of schooling away from home communities; youth in kin-based heavy metal gangs configuring new identities, and indigenous people of southeast Australia reflecting on whether an “Aboriginal way” can be sustained. The volume takes a step toward understanding the relation between changing circumstances and changing lives of indigenous Australians today and provides a sense of the quality and the feel of those lives.

Anchoring her work in archival sources in film technology, economy, and education, Naida Garc?a-Crespo argues that Puerto Rico's position as a stateless nation allows for a fresh understanding of national cinema based on perceptions of productive cultural contributions rather than on citizenship or state structures. This book aims to contribute to recently expanding discussions of cultural networks by analyzing how Puerto Rican cinema navigates the problems arising from the connection and/or disjunction between nation and state. The author argues that Puerto Rico's position as a stateless nation puts pressure on traditional conceptions of national cinema, which tend to rely on assumptions of state support or a bounded nation-state. She also contends that the cultural and business practices associated with early cinema reveal that transnationalism is an integral part of national identities and their development.
