Описание: The book recounts the incredible life stories of the author starting with his life as a persecuted minority in the Indian subcontinent where he hopped across many geographical boundaries and socio-political- religious divides as a destitute refugee in search of his material and spiritual identity before coming to America with just $9.57 in his pocket. The transformation from destitute refugee to serving the National Academy of Science, the highest scientific body in the U.S.A, is in and of itself an extraordinary tale. The book chronicles many of his subsequent awe-inspiring successes in America as a pioneering rocket and space scientist, including serving on various committees of the venerable National Academy of Sciences and as an adventurer with many extraordinary exploits including swimming the English Channel, cosmonaut training and Mig 25 flying in Russia, trekking to the North Pole, climbing to the base camp of Mount Everest, and racing an Indy 500 car at the Fontana Speedway, among others. His life story is the embodiment of the indomitable human spirit that allowed him to rise from a life of despair as a destitute refugee to scale many extraordinary heights in widely divergent fields, proving that the sky is indeed the limit in America, the land of opportunity. The author examines the minority experiences in other troubled spots all around the world in his attempt to understand the social dynamics that play out with disastrous consequences. The book also provides a closer look at the world's contemporary religions, in an attempt to understand the immeasurable suffering mankind has endured as a result of intolerance and acrimony towards differing faiths. The book includes the author's observations and experiences about the cultural and philosophical differences between the Western and Eastern societies and how it leads to contrasting outlooks and day-to-day life in different cultures. 1

Описание: The fascinating untold story of Finnish scientist and explorer Pehr Kalm, who in 1750, became the first scientist to visit and study Niagara Falls. Sent by the famous Swedish natural historian Carl Linnaeus to research the New World, Kalm's task was to collect samples and write descriptions for Linnaeus. His exciting expedition lasted three and a half years, and its impact on the natural sciences was groundbreaking. Kalm described all that he saw: the landscape and geography, colonists' settlements and customs, Indians and slaves, and of course, many plants and animals. His scientific report on Niagara Falls was the first, and it was published by Benjamin Franklin. Two states have named their state flowers after him, and the Virginia creeper, which he brought back from his travels, now grows all over Finland. The book's brilliant illustrations offer an accurate and engaging picture of Kalm's journey, and the text is enriched by passages from Kalm's own travel journal. From Finland to Niagara Falls is an illustrated history book for the young and the curious of all ages.

Описание: This is that rarest of books, the one you grab when the house is on fire, or you're about to be marooned on a desert island with nothing else to read. Sven Hedin was not only one of the greatest explorers of the nineteenth century, he was also a brilliant storyteller. Nowhere does the Swedish author tell a tale of excitement, adventure, danger, travel, and hair-raising escape like he does in "My Life as an Explorer". Written in an engaging anecdotal style, Hedin explains how he first went to Persia in 1885. Even this first trip was full of mishaps, as he nearly lost his life riding across the snow-covered Elbruz mountains during a fierce snow-storm. Yet Hedin miraculously survived and went on to meet the Shah of Persia. Thus was set the pattern for his remarkable future, which was one part royalty and ten parts danger. "My Life as an Explorer" regales the reader with almost more adventure than one can bear to read. Hedin raids the burial grounds of a secret Asian sect. He courts disaster with the Emir of Bokhara. He climbs accursed mountains in China, discovers lost cities in the Gobi desert, infiltrates Tibet, outwits Torgut bandits, and of course becomes close friends with royalty from Peking to London, including the rulers of both the Russian and British empires. In short Hedin lived a life so full of adventure and escape that merely reading about it is exhausting. Illustrated with dozens of his own drawings, this remains the single most exciting adventure travel book written in the early twentieth century.

This book provides a thoroughly researched biography of the naval career of Matthew Flinders, with particular emphasis on his importance for the maritime discovery of Australia. Sailing in the wake of the 18th-century voyages of exploration by Captain Cook and others, Flinders was the first naval commander to circumnavigate Australia's coastline. He contributed more to the mapping and naming of places in Australia than virtually any other single person. His voyage to Australia on H.M.S. Investigator expanded the scope of imperial, geographical and scientific knowledge. This biography places Flinders's career within the context of Pacific exploration and the early white settlement of Australia. Flinders's connections with other explorers, his use of patronage, the dissemination of his findings, and his posthumous reputation are also discussed in what is an important new scholarly work in the field.
Автор: J. David Lowell Название: Intrepid Explorer: The Autobiography of the World`s Best Mine Finder ISBN: 1941451039 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781941451038 Издательство: Mare Nostrum (Eurospan) Рейтинг: Цена: 29260.00 T Наличие на складе: Невозможна поставка. Описание: When seven-year-old Dave Lowell was camped out at his father's mine in the hills of southern Arizona in 1935, he knew he had found his calling. "Life couldn't get any better than this," he recalls. "I didn't know what science was, but wisps of scientific thought were already working into my plan." So began the legendary career of the engineer, geologist, explorer, and international businessman whose life is recounted in his own words in this captivating book. An Arizona native with family roots in territorial times, Lowell grew from modest beginnings on a ranch near Nogales to become a major world figure in the fields of minerals, mining, and economic geology. He has personally discovered more copper than anyone in history and has developed multibillion-dollar gold and copper mines that have changed the economies of nations. And although he has consulted for corporations in the field of mining, he has largely operated as an independent agent and explorer, the architect of his own path and success. His life's story unfolds in four stages: his early education in his field, on-the-job learning at sites in the United States and Mexico, development of exploration strategies, and finally, the launch of his own enterprises and companies. Recurring themes in Lowell's life include the strict personal, ethical, and tactical policies he requires of his colleagues; his devotion to his family; and his distaste for being away from the field in a corporate office, even to this day. The magnitude of Lowell's overall success is evident in his list of mine discoveries, as well as in his scientific achievements and the enormous respect his friends and colleagues have had for him throughout his lengthy career, which he continues to zealously pursue.
Roald Amundsen was a Norwegian explorer whose team were the first to reach the South Pole - this is his astonishing story, in his own words.
Amundsen begins by explaining that he was not born with an urge to explorer the farthest, uncharted regions of the world. At fifteen he received as a gift the memoirs of Sir John Franklin, a famous British explorer, which roused an immediate interest. This was increased further by Amundsen's compulsory military service, part of which consisted of roaming the rugged, snowy outdoors. Almost immediately after the end of his time in the army, further explorations deep in the Arctic circle beckoned.
At twenty-five, Amundsen was accepted into the Belgian Antarctic Expedition - an event he considers very lucky. For it was here that he gained his first experiences of the Antarctic climate, and began to contemplate organizing a team to reach the South Pole. It was an epic journey; Amundsen's team, equipped with sleds run by dogs and clad in thick furs, famously became the first people ever to set foot on the South Pole.
Later in the book, Amundsen explains his efforts to chart the Northwest Passage in the remotest wildernesses of Canada. To this end, he made use of aircraft in the early 1920s. However, owing to the economic turmoil after World War One he found it difficult to finance his expeditions. Nevertheless, his spirit remained undaunted - indeed, the tenacity that got Roald Amundsen so far shines in these pages.

Описание: Tales From Under the Family Tree Following the Drum By Ethel Cushing Brant Come along on the adventures with a young army wife in the early 1900s. From the Wild West to the Philippines to the Mexican border, Ethel Cushing Brant (1882-1941) describes the rigors and gaieties of traveling with the Ninth and Tenth Cavalry Regiment, known as the Buffalo Soldiers. Using colorful descriptions and witty insights, she tells interesting, historical, and humorous events, all along showing the caliber of the army wife to patiently and unwearyingly adapt to the many hardships of "following the drum." Ethel grew up as a single child in a privileged, high-society family in New York City. Her life dramatically changed after marrying Gerald Brant immediately following his 1904 graduation from the US Military Academy at West Point. When I close my eyes and think back to that little, untried person, who stepped out of her warm, sheltered, cotton-wool existence into the most adventurous, hand-to-mouth, catch-as-catch-can life she could have chosen, I realize, oh so poignantly, that experience is certainly the best teacher, but she is like a tigress teaching her cubs-she cuffs them about a lot, especially in the Army. There is a bonus appendix: "Memoirs from Ethel's Husband, Major General Gerald C. Brant (1880-1958)." - Ethel Virginia Brant Bauer Edited by: 2 Ethel Virginia Brant Bauer
Автор: Cooke Catherine Nixon Название: In Search of Tom Slick: Explorer and Visionary ISBN: 1623498716 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781623498719 Издательство: Mare Nostrum (Eurospan) Рейтинг: Цена: 24250.00 T Наличие на складе: Невозможна поставка. Описание: The major guiding principle in the life of Tom Slick was a relentless search for adventure and exploration of the unknown, sparked by his immense curiosity about everything and his willingness to embrace and investigate new ideas. He was a larger-than-life Texas oilman, entrepreneur, and explorer. He climbed mountains in the Himalayas in search of the legendary Yeti. He developed new breeds of cattle. He discovered major oil fields. He founded several research institutes in San Antonio, including the Texas Biomedical Research Institute, Southwest Research Institute, and the Mind Science Foundation. He even wrote and published on the topic of world peace in the 1950s; the Tom Slick World Peace Lectures at the University of Texas' LBJ Library and the endowed Tom Slick Professorship of World Peace were established after his death in 1962.In this revised and expanded edition of her previously published biography, Catherine Nixon Cooke, niece of Tom Slick, has mined personal letters, family papers, archives of the institutes founded by her uncle, and other resources to expand what we know of this enigmatic, energetic adventurer. In addition to relating his better-known exploits and pursuits, Cooke delves for the first time into Slick's shadowy connections with the world of international espionage, including clues that Slick may have been involved in certain operations and interests of the OSS and its successor organization, the CIA.Illustrated throughout with rare historic photographs, In Search of Tom Slick: Explorer and Visionary will introduce a new readership to this influential yet little known figure in modern history.
