This is the story of an elite infantry regiment of the British Army; the First Regiment of Foot Guards--which became the Grenadier Guards, during a particularly active and significant period of its long and illustrious history. It also is the story of a young man who served with the Guards as an officer, Alexander Fraser, Lord Saltoun, principally recounted through his journals and correspondence. It is a story of wars and campaigns fought against the First Empire of the French under the enigmatic leadership of Napoleon Bonaparte, and so it also concerns the emperor's nemesis the Duke of Wellington. All these elements are drawn together in these pages. Saltoun and his regiment marched for a decade on roads that ran through Sicily, the Peninsular War in Portugal, Spain and France and the Low Countries, until they arrived at a cataclysmic rendezvous during which, over a three day period in 1815, they took part in the most famous battles in the annals of British conflict at Quatre Bras and Waterloo. For most students of military history the name of Robert Craufurd will be forever synonymous with the famous Light Division of Wellington's Peninsula Army which he commanded. Within an army that gathered laurels to itself wherever it fought, the Light Division was considered to be among its elite, for it contained first rate light infantry regiments including the evocative green jacketed riflemen of the 95th. Craufurd, or 'Black Bob' as he was known to his men in view of a combination of his dark complexion, heavy facial growth, mood swings and short temper, also fostered extreme views on military discipline. His strength (and occasionally his imprudent failing) was that he was perpetually aggressive and prepared to take the fight to the enemy. Nevertheless, despite these peculiarities, this complex general was valued by Wellington and when he appeared on the field of Fuentes de Onoro, after an absence, his men readily cheered him. He was a highly experienced officer who had seen action in India against Tipu Sultan, had been military attach to the Austrian and Russian armies, and had served in the disastrous expeditions to the Helder and Buenos Aires before joining the conflict on the Iberian Peninsula which brought his renown. Craufurd, who had been promoted to Major-General in 1811, was mortally wounded during the assault on Ciudad Rodrigo in January 1812 as he stood upon the glacis directing the stormers of his Light Division. He died four days later, aged 47 years. This well-known biography of Robert Craufurd is supported in this edition by another concise biography by Cole. The texts are complemented by illustrations and maps which were not included when these texts were originally published.

Fortescue is rightly renowned for his multi-volume magnum opus, 'The History of the British Army', which, since it was written in the early decades of the twentieth century, feature the struggles with Napoleonic France, as a substantial part of the whole. These campaigns took place across the world but, for the British, most notably in Spain, Portugal and the South of France following the French invasion of Iberia. The numerous disconnected sections, within Fortescue's larger work, concerning the Peninsular War, have been extracted for the first time and carefully edited to create this six volume history. There can be no doubt that in Fortescue the British Army found one of its finest historians. His scholarship is superb, but is balanced by outstanding and fearless academic analysis. What makes this history incomparable and essential is that Fortescue was a contemporary of the other great British military historian of the modern age, Charles Oman, who wrote his own history of the Peninsular War. Fortescue conferred and collaborated with Oman to produce this work and within these pages the reader will discover both confirmations and qualified corrections to some of Oman's assertions on points of detail. Fortescue was extraordinarily thorough in his use of primary source material (which is annotated) and he additionally walked the ground of the campaign himself. The magnitude of the joint scholarship which brought this history into being cannot be overstated. This analysis of the Peninsular War differs significantly from Fortescue's other writings on the British Army, in that in embraces the activities of the French and the Spanish in some depth, thus creating a total view. This is a serious, academic, and thoroughly readable, history and no library of the subject can be truly said to be complete without it. The text has been complemented in this Leonaur edition by battlefield maps not present in the original publication.

Wellington and his remarkable 'old Peninsular Army'
The excellence of Sir Charles Oman's scholarship as an historian is well established. He wrote on a wide variety of subjects and historical periods in an erudite but succinct and easy to read style and his comprehensive multi-volume history of the Peninsular War is widely regarded as the most significant work on the subject since the publication of Napier's history. This book is equally well known and well regarded. Within its pages Oman describes in some detail the British Army that fought the First Empire of the French in Spain, Portugal and the South of France. This story would be incomplete without that army's commander, and Wellington's performance and methodology is closely described, together with those of his most significant lieutenants. Each constituent part of the army is considered from structure to equipage and operations in relationship to the French forces which opposed them. Oman's examination of the British Army of the early nineteenth century is now regarded as a classic. This Leonaur edition is unique since it includes 40 illustrations and maps which did not appear in the original edition of the book. Oman devoted two chapters to his bibliographical sources and though they remain in this edition, since their content is fascinating and invaluable, they have been moved from the beginning to the end of the book in the interest of accessibility to the principal subject of the work.
