Regular Soldiers, Irregular War: Violence and Restraint in the Second Intifada, Devorah S. Manekin
Автор: Lea Hagoel, Devorah Kalekin-Fishman Название: From the Margins to New Ground: An Autoethnography of Passage between Disciplines ISBN: 9463002960 ISBN-13(EAN): 9789463002967 Издательство: Brill Рейтинг: Цена: 66410.00 T Наличие на складе: Невозможна поставка. Описание: The authors, two sociologists, discover, follow-up, examine, and make sense of the cross-roads where the social and life sciences meet, surprised by the emergent story which they simultaneously witness and document. Together, they focus on Lea Hagoel’s professional path as a medical sociologist fitting in with bio-medical scientific work patterns of a multi-disciplinary team of physicians, nurses, bio-statisticians, IT personnel, molecular biologists, and managerial-administrative team members. Lea shared her experiences with Devorah, and what developed into this book consists of the story itself—the unfolding of events as observed and described by Lea who tells what it was like for a sociologist. Her story unfolds in the context of the ongoing dialogue which lasted more than two decades and turned into an autoethnography a deux. Finally, the ethnographers offer insights into the world of biology and medicine, into women’s lives, into being a native in a disciplinary culture, and into transdisciplinarity. In three parts, the book describes and theorizes the quest of a medical sociologist for transdisciplinarity. Part I explores the theoretical background, Part II presents the story of different stages in Lea’s experiences tracing the trajectory of her growing professional repertoire and discovering the practical meaning of how cross-disciplinary knowledge affects her performance as a researcher in the organization with which she is affiliated. Part III draws conclusions about what moving between disciplines can mean for a researcher.

Описание: In the recent two decades many unknown texts from Qumran have been published, which rework passages from the Hebrew Bible. Dated from the second and first centuries BCE these documents display the methods of biblical interpretation at this early stage and the links to the inner-biblical interpretation and final shaping of the Hebrew Bible. The volume concentrates on the various reworking of Genesis and the Patriarchs, which were a favorite subject of the owners of the Qumran library. The volume thus contributes to the exegesis of Genesis during the second and first centuries BCE, and its prehistory within the Hebrew Bible.

Описание: Devorah Schoenfeld’s new work offers an in-depth examination of two of the most influential Christian and Jewish Bible commentaries of the High Middle Ages. The Glossa Ordinaria and Rashi’s commentary were standard texts for Bible study in the High Middle Ages, and Rashi's influence continues to the present day. Although Rashi’s commentary and the Glossa developed at the same time with no known contact between them, they shared a way of reading text that shaped their interpretations of the central religious narrative of the Binding of Isaac. Schoenfeld’s text examines each commentary unto itself and offers a detailed comparison, one that illustrates the similarities between Rashi and the Gloss that derive not merely from their shared late antique heritage but also from their common twelfth-century context, and the Jewish-Christian polemic in which they both, implicitly or explicitly, take part.

In Black Power TV, Devorah Heitner chronicles the emergence of Black public affairs television starting in 1968. She examines two local shows, New York's Inside Bedford-Stuyvesant and Boston's Say Brother, and the national programs Soul! and Black Journal. These shows offered viewers radical and innovative programming: the introspections of a Black police officer in Harlem, African American high school students discussing visionary alternatives to the curriculum, and Miriam Makeba comparing race relations in the United States to apartheid in South Africa. While Inside Bedford-Stuyvesant and Say Brother originated from a desire to contain Black discontent during a period of urban uprisings and racial conflict, these shows were re-envisioned by their African American producers as venues for expressing Black critiques of mainstream discourse, disseminating Black culture, and modeling Black empowerment. At the national level, Soul! and Black Journal allowed for the imagining of a Black nation and a distinctly African American consciousness, and they played an influential role in the rise of the Black Arts Movement. Black Power TV reveals how regulatory, activist, and textual histories are interconnected and how Black public affairs television redefined African American representations in ways that continue to reverberate today.
Автор: Baum Devorah Название: The Jewish Joke: A Short History ? with Punchlines ISBN: 1681777428 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781681777429 Издательство: Mare Nostrum (Eurospan) Цена: 19190.00 T Наличие на складе: Нет в наличии. Описание: Heard the one about the Rabbi and the cow from Minsk? Look no further than this witty compendium, a fascinating and revealing celebration of the great Jewish Joke. Comedy is full of famously funny Jews, from Groucho Marx to Sarah Silverman, from Larry David to Jerry Seinfeld. This smart and funny book includes tales from many of these much-loved comics, and will appeal to their broad audience, while revealing the history, context and wider culture of Jewish joking. The Jewish joke is as old as Abraham, and like the Jews themselves it has wandered over the world, learned countless new languages, worked with a range of different materials, been performed in front of some pretty hostile crowds, and yet still retained its own distinctive identity. So what is it that animates the Jewish joke? Why are Jews so often thought of as "funny"? And how old can a joke get? The Jewish Joke is a brilliant--and laugh-out-loud funny--riff on what sets Jewish jokes apart from other jokes, why they are important to Jewish identity, and how they work. Ranging from self-deprecation to anti-Semitism, politics to sex, Devorah Baum looks at the history of Jewish joking and asks whether the Jewish joke has a future. With jokes from Lena Dunham to Woody Allen, as well as Freud and Marx (Groucho, mostly), Baum balances serious research with light-hearted humor and provides fascinating insight into this well-known and much loved cultural phenomenon.

Granta 146 is guest-edited by Devorah Baum and Josh Appignanesi. We're living through hysterical times. Rage, resentment, shame, guilt and paranoia are everywhere surfacing, as is the intemperate adoration or hatred of popular but divisive public figures. Political discourse suffers when people seem to trust only what they feel and can no longer be swayed by reason or facts.
If extreme feelings are a contagion within the political cultures of today, so too is the spread of a kind of affectlessness, as if we're starting to resemble the very technologies that threaten to replace us.
Featuring vital new fiction, non-fiction, photography and poetry from across the globe, this issue is all about how our feelings make our politics, and how our politics make us feel.
