Описание:

While the accomplishments and influence of Jack Johnson, Joe Louis, Jesse Owens, Jackie Robinson, and Muhammad Ali are doubtless impressive solely on their merits, these luminaries of the black sporting experience did not emerge spontaneously. Their rise was part of a gradual evolution in social and power relations in American culture between the 1890s and 1940s that included athletes such as jockey Isaac Murphy, barnstorming pilot Bessie Coleman, and golfer Teddy Rhodes. The contributions of these early athletes to our broader collective history, and their heroic confrontations with the entrenched racism of their times, helped bring about the incremental changes that after 1945 allowed for sports to be more fully integrated.

Before Jackie Robinson details and analyzes the lives of these lesser-known but important athletes within the broader history of black liberation. These figures not only excelled in their given sports but also transcended class and racial divides in making inroads into popular culture despite the societal restrictions placed on them. They were also among the first athletes to blur the line between athletics, entertainment, and celebrity culture. This volume presents a more nuanced account of early African American athletes' lives and their ongoing struggle for acceptance, relevance, and personal and group identity.

Gerald R. Gems is a professor in the Kinesiology Department at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, and vice president of the International Society for the History of Physical Education and Sport. He is the author of several books, including Boxing: A Concise History of the Sweet Science and The Athletic Crusade: Sport and American Cultural Imperialism (Nebraska, 2006).

Описание: A reassessment of the precedents, course, and legacy of the Reformation has occurred in the present generation of academic writing. This collection of essays brings together research by established and new scholars on themes of the Reformation with a particular focus on its antecedents and legacies in the Anglican tradition. Utilizing a diversity of topics, approaches, and methods, this book adds measurably to our knowledge of the place of the Reformation in Britain and Ireland as well as its European, North American, and African particularities.
Exploring a variety of themes, this collection examines the Reformation in relation to key aspects of church organization, belief, sacrament, conversion, relationships with other denominations, theological education, church and state, worship, and issues of resilience and decline. While these themes are pursued broadly, there is a particular focus on the context of the Anglican tradition in terms of Reformation preoccupations and concerns. This collection’s thematic content, chronological span, and geographical range will also challenge accepted views, deepen understanding, and highlight new areas of enquiry, bringing new research and insights to bear on established observations.
Academics will find this book of particular interest for courses on the Reformation, Early Modern Europe, and the history of Christianity.

Описание: By relying on the educational models of Wilberforce University and Morehouse College, this study gathered historical artifacts that provide critical responses to the following research questions: What were the similarities and differences between the social, historical, political and cultural forces that led to the founding of the colleges? What were the similar and different motivations and interests of the founding leaders? What were the similar and different effects of these founding leaders on their institutions in their time period? What similar and different supports did these institutions receive from their religious organizations? What can we learn from the impact of these institutions on Black higher education over the last 150 years?

The project sets out to answers the aforementioned research questions through the following Chapters. Chapter 1, Purpose of the Study, provides an overview of the research topic and contextualizes the study by identifying the research questions. This Chapter provides a brief introduction to the history of Black higher education during Reconstruction in the US. It then describes the institutional context of the time period to show the need for research on this topic and to articulate the study’s significance. The second chapter, Research Design and Methodology, outlines the historical method and approach to this study. This Chapter defines and explains the selection of scientific management as the educational theory underpinning this study. It also defines and explains the use of Dr. Jim Laub’s renowned servant leadership Organizational Leadership Assessment (OLA) model. Chapter 3, Historical Background and Context, articulates the central problem, critical issues, and historical context that have inspired this research study. This Chapter assesses the social, historical, political and cultural forces that led to the founding of the colleges by providing a historiography of Black education during Reconstruction, while detailing its development and continued struggles. It also develops the thesis that Black education during Reconstruction was the natural by-product of the pre-existing struggle of African-American communities to achieve empowerment and self- improvement.

The fourth chapter, Founding Presidents and their Institutions, provides a biographical introduction to the personal and professional experiences of Bishop Daniel Alexander Payne during his tenure as President of Wilberforce University, 1865-1876 and Rev. Dr. Joseph Robert’s tenure as President of Morehouse College, 1871-1884. Accordingly, the focus of this Chapter is fourfold. First, it elaborates the core aspects of Dr. Daniel Alexander Payne’s tenure as President of Wilberforce University. It, then, shifts to draw out the phases of the historical development of Wilberforce University. Thirdly, it elaborates the key constituents of Dr. Joseph Robert’s presidency of Morehouse College. And lastly, it maps out the historical development of Morehouse College. Chapter 5, Institutional Comparisons focuses on conducting institutional and leadership profile assessments. The institutional assessment includes a demographical and mission-based comparison of the colleges. The leadership assessment compares and contrasts each president’s impact and influence on their respective institutions, and the similarities and differences of their presidential leadership. In the concluding chapter, Chapter 6, the conclusion builds from the research questions to determine what can be learned from the impact of these institutions on Black higher education over the last 150 years. And how their accomplishments can be used as guidelines for contemporary institutional development, curricula development, Christian education, gender studies, the improvement of Black colleges, and lastly how to mold exemplary presidents to lead these unique institutions.

Описание:

At
one time, Asa Philip Randolph (1889-1979) was a household name. As president of
the all-black Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP), he was an embodiment
of America’s multifaceted radical tradition, a leading spokesman for Black
America, and a potent symbol of trade unionism and civil rights agitation for
nearly half a century. But with the dissolution of the BSCP in the 1970s, the
assaults waged against organized labor in the 1980s, and the overall silencing
of labor history in U.S. popular discourse, he has been largely forgotten among
large segments of the general public before whom he once loomed so large.
Historians, however, have not only continued to focus on Randolph himself, but
his role (either direct, or via his legacy) in a wide range of social,
political, cultural, and even religious milieu and movements.

The authors of Reframing Randolph have taken Randolph’s dusty portrait down from
the wall to reexamine and reframe it, allowing scholars to regard him in new,
and often competing, lights. This collection of essays gathers, for the very
first time, many genres of perspectives on Randolph. Featuring both established
and emergent intellectual voices, this project seeks to avoid both hagiography
and blanket condemnation alike. The contributors represent the diverse ways
that historians have approached the importance of his long and complex career
in the main political, social, and cultural currents of twentieth-century
African American specifically, and twentieth-century U.S. history overall. The
central goal of Reframing Randolph is
to achieve a combination of synthetic and critical reappraisal.

Описание:

After the pioneers, the second generation of African American anthropologists trained in the late 1950s and 1960s. Expected to study their own or similar cultures, these scholars often focused on the African diaspora but in some cases they also ranged further afield both geographically and intellectually. Yet their work remains largely unknown to colleagues and students. This volume collects intellectual biographies of fifteen accomplished African American anthropologists of the era. The authors explore the scholars' diverse backgrounds and interests and look at their groundbreaking methodologies, ethnographies, and theories. They also place their subjects within their tumultuous times, when antiracism and anticolonialism transformed the field and the emergence of ideas around racial vindication brought forth new worldviews. Scholars profiled: George Clement Bond, Johnnetta B. Cole, James Lowell Gibbs Jr., Vera Mae Green, John Langston Gwaltney, Ira E. Harrison, Delmos Jones, Diane K. Lewis, Claudia Mitchell-Kernan, Oliver Osborne, Anselme Remy, William Alfred Shack, Audrey Smedley, Niara Sudarkasa, and Charles Preston Warren II

Описание: "To struggle and battle and overcome and absolutely defeat every force designed against us is the only way to achieve."- Nannie Helen Burroughs. African American women have been integral to the various fights for equality throughout American history. Their importance to the movement occurred long before lifelong activist Rosa Parks became the catalyst in the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955. Who are the countless and often nameless black women who risked their lives and worked tirelessly to fight for the equality of black people in this country? From slavery to the modern day civil rights movement, the contributions of African American women are often overlooked in the retelling of history, but their contributions were critical in the battle for racial equality. They were grassroots organisers, strategists, and educators. Due to their selflessness and kindness, these black women became heroines of the movement. This book seeks to unearth the contributions of African American women throughout various periods of American history.
