L’autore austriaco trova delle suggestioni importanti per l’elaborazione della sua teoria nella psicotecnica, disciplina oggi nota sotto il nome di psicologia applicata. Per questo la prima parte della ricerca e preceduta da «La psicotecnica e la sua possibilita di applicazione nell’esercito», una relazione che Musil tenne al Ministero della difesa austriaco il 10 marzo 1922, qui tradotta per la prima volta in italiano. Il presente studio analizza inoltre le strategie psicotecniche e retoriche che Musil ha utilizzato per debellare gli stereotipi del pensiero e delle emozioni dei suoi lettori. Secondo Musil quando leggiamo «ci ficcano in testa l’imbuto di Norimberga e un individuo che non conosciamo cerca di versarci nel cervello tutta la sapienza della sua mente e del suo cuore». Per favorire il rinnovamento attraverso la lettura il romanzo propone un uso improprio del concetto di «anima» e dei titoli e quattro «lettori modello»: Clarisse e Moosbrugger nel primo libro, Ulrich e Agathe nel secondo libro. La mia analisi dimostra come Musil abbia forgiato la propria teoria della lettura al confine fra la psicotecnica e la psicologia della Gestalt, contemplando sia l’effetto che l’autore intende raggiungere sul suo lettore (Wirkungsasthetik) che l’effetto realmente prodotto o producibile (Rezeptionsasthetik).
