In the tradition of critical race theory, we are charged with the task of operationalizing theory into practice in the struggle for, and commitment to, social justice. Though higher education leaders and leadership programs are often absent in this process, given their influence and power, higher education leaders need to be engaged in this endeavor. The objective of this edited volume is to draw upon critical race counter‐stories and praxis for the purpose of providing higher education leaders‐in‐training and practicing higher education leaders with tangible narratives that demonstrate how racism and its intersectionality with other forms of oppression manifest within higher education. An additional aim of this book is to provide leaders with a working knowledge of the central tenets of critical race theory and the tools that are required in recognizing how they might be complicit in the reproduction of institutional and systemic racism and other forms of oppression. More precisely, this edited volume intends to draw upon and center the lived experiences and voices of contributors that have experienced racism in higher education. Through the use of critical race methodology and counter‐storytelling (Sol rzano & Yosso, 2002), contributors will share and interrogate their experiences while offering current and future higher education leaders insight in recognizing how racism functions within their respective institutions, and how they can address it. Since the nineteenth century various housing solutions have evolved, such as sprawling Australian home ownership and compact Dutch social rental housing. This phenomenon cannot be adequately explained with simple descriptions of key events, politics and housing outcomes. Critical Realism and Housing Studies pushes debate forward, arguing that a new ontological perspective is required to address fundamental issues in housing and comparative research.
This book is clearly organized into three parts which:
evaluate ontological and methodological alternatives for comparative housing research
provide two historical case studies inspired by critical realist ontology
compare the causal tendencies that explain diverging housing pathways in Australia and the Netherlands.
Lawson proposes that we turn to critical realism for the solution. From this perspective the causal tendencies of complex, open and structured housing phenomena are highlighted. With this insight we are able to extract the key social arrangements which promote different housing solutions from the historical case studies. Social arrangements which are found to influence alternative pathways in housing history concern the property rights, circuit of savings and investment, as well as labour and welfare relations. As they develop differently over time and space they affect where, when and how housing solutions develop.

Описание: Despite challenges and continuing inequalities surrounding urban education, there are instances which provide a counter narrative to the dominant discourses of failure. Urban educators who engage conscious caring and “armed love” in their practice are an example of this. This qualitative instrumental case study examines the practices of two transformative urban educators, around caring and armed love in their classroom praxis. This study examines their conceptions and practice of these approaches through interview, field-notes and video data. The findings involve manifestations of both caring and armed love, including connection, nurturance through food, community, directness, relationships, honesty, respect and demand, as well as high expectations. Despite the challenges that surrounded this school, the atmosphere of caring and armed love acted like a protective barrier or space of safety for the students. My conclusion points to the vital significance of re-humanizing our educational discourse in favor of the genuine care and connections that exist in urban settings, and the importance of re-centering our discussion to focus on the human aspects of education which lie at the core of our profession.
