Описание: This book is a collection of essays in honour of Professor Wang Gungwu. Professor Wang is not only a great historian on Chinese history in general and the Chinese overseas in particular, but has much wider influence through remarkable domain crossing, namely spatial crossing characterised by geographical straddling between inside and outside of China, temporal crossing from the ancient past to the contemporary, inter-disciplinary crossing from history to the social sciences, and intellectual crossing from the academia to public activism. He has been a long-lasting source of inspiration for understanding some of the most pressing and complex issues in our times, including the nature of Chinas rise and its implications for the regional and world order. In a nutshell, this book presents Wang as a highly active educator-scholar who has achieved the highest academic standard as well as far-reaching influence over issues that concern all walks of life.By focusing on the theme of Chineseness and Chinas modernity, this book adds depth to the analysis of Chinas rise and its implications for the region and the world. It contains a chapter providing the most comprehensive and updated review of Wangs scholarship thus far. Another chapter demonstrates how Wang, based on his deep understanding of Chinese civilisation and history, articulates a distinct view of the world order that differs from either the thesis of Thucydidess trap or the advocacy of mutual accommodation. Interestingly, this book also includes a chapter that highlights Wangs Southeast Asian-ness, suggesting that Wangs scholarship cautions against not only western-centric views towards China, but also Sino-centric views towards Southeast Asia. In short, this edited volume is both a reference book for understanding Wangs scholarship and an extension of his scholarship to the analysis of Chinas growing international influence and its implications for the world order.

Описание: This intellectual history project, which has been conducted primarily by gathering the individualized oral history of senior scholars who work on China, Chinese civilisation, and Chinese people in different parts of the world, has proceeded with the support of various national and private teams since 2005. Although attempting a grand scheme of analysis or even deciding if such a scheme is desirable at all is still premature, comparative analyses using interviews have already produced a significant body of thought, which the present and future generations could reflect on. The current publication assembles a number of possibilities provided by scholars who have actually interviewed their senior colleagues as well as by interviewees who recollect their intellectual growth to enrich the project. Their approaches and concerns vary and overlap with one another in distinct aspects, indicating an evolving agenda of never-ending inspiration. Nevertheless, with the initial problem in mind, which is to discern the mutual constitution of China, China scholars, and China scholarship, the following introduction serves to inductively present the rationales of this publication. The expost notion of post-Chineseness will be its main theme.

Описание:

Colonial legacies in knowledge production affect the way the world is represented and understood today. However, the subject is rarely attended. The book, Colonial Legacies and Contemporary Studies of China and Chineseness: Unlearning Binaries, Strategizing Self, is about the colonial construction of intellectual perspectives of the colonized population in terms of the latter's approach to China and Chineseness in the modern world. Relying on the available oral histories of senior China scholars primarily in Asia, authors from various postcolonial and colonial sites present these multiple routs of self-constitution and reconstitution through the use of China and Chineseness as category. The revealed manipulation of this third category, romantically as well as antagonistically, is easier than straightforward self-reflection for us all to accept that, coming to identities and relations, none, even subaltern, is politically innocent or capable of epistemological monopoly. Through comparative studies, it shows a way of self-understanding that does not always require discursive construction of border or cultural consumption of any specific "other".

With US-China rivalry possibly lasting for decades, this book offers extremely rich and contrasting practices from the subaltern worlds for anyone in a quest for humanist alternatives. This interdisciplinary and transnational project contributes to post-colonial studies, cultural studies, international relations, China and Chinese studies, and the comparative histories of East Asia, Southeast Asia, and South Asia.

Описание: This volume is a book of reflections and encounters about the region that the Chinese knew as Nanyang. The essays in it look back at the years of uncertainty after the end of World War II and explore the period largely through images of mixed heritages in Malaysia and Singapore. They also look at the trends towards social and political divisiveness following the years of decolonization in Southeast Asia. Never far in the background is the struggle to build new nations during four decades of an ideological Cold War and the Chinese determination to move from near-collapse in the 1940s and out of the traumatic changes of the Maoist revolution to become the powerhouse that it now is.

Описание: 'The book is engaging, informative, and provocative and can profitably be read by undergraduates and professors alike. You do not have to agree with the dean of China studies to learn from him.'China Review International The book shows how the Chinese are now confident of their capacity to learn all they need from the developed world and are keen to know which parts of the past they would need to build a modern Chinese civilization. They are very conscious of the challenges coming from the United States, and are looking for ways and means to respond to a superpower that wants to preserve its dominant position in the international status quo.The book seeks to explain what China is doing and what its immediate and long-term interests are. It is not to defend or judge China. It does not employ theoretical frameworks that are not appropriate for describing Chinese conditions. It calls for understanding why history is particularly relevant to the Chinese state and most of its people. That way, we also see how the present and hopes for the future changes our perspectives of the past. Related Link(s)
