Описание: For the first time in Penguin Classics, Harry Crewss highly acclaimed, evocative literary memoir of his Depression-era childhood in the rural South.

A Penguin Classic

Considered by Mary Karr as the most overlooked of the best memoirs ever written, A Childhood by Harry Crews captures the first six years of his life among impoverished tenant farmer families in rural southern Georgia. Crews shares details of farm life, his fathers death, his friendship with the son of a Black hired hand, his bout with polio, his mother and stepfathers failing marriage, his near-fatal scalding at a hog killing, and a five-month sojourn in Jacksonville, Florida.

The best introduction to Crewss acclaimed fiction, his memoir, A Childhood, in its portrait of the people, locales, circumstances, and Bacon County lore that shaped him, offers a foundation of the writers outlook; the refuge he found in his storytelling imagination; and his reverence and affection for the outsider, the outcast, and those considered freakish.

Описание: When a local man returns to Enigma, Georgia as a successful traveling evangelist, the townspeople, who idolize him, begin to attribute him with healing powers he knows he doesn't have. The celebrated first novel of Harry Crews, in its Penguin Classics debut.

A Penguin Classic

In Crews's first novel published in 1968, a gifted, idolized singer returns to his poor hometown and a life and family he is so far removed from he now holds them in contempt. The Gospel Singer reveals the absurdity of blind religious faith and idol worship, and the hypocrisy that results with the offering of money or sex. Crews grapples with race, gender, religion, and place, and steps back to divulge the secrets of his characters--including a dead girl awaiting the Gospel Singer's melodious eulogy, his dysfunctional family, a murderer, the zealous town residents, and a traveling freak show. This darkly comic, bitingly satirical, grotesque and violent--yet strangely empathetic--first novel displays Crews's brilliant literary talent that garnered critical acclaim and a cult following.

Описание: In 2010, Ted Geltner drove to Gainesville, Florida, to pay a visit to Harry Crews and ask the legendary author if he would be willing to be the subject of a literary biography. His health rapidly deteriorating, Crews told Geltner he was on board and would even sit for interviews and tell his stories one last time. “Ask me anything you want, bud,” Crews said. “But you’d better do it quick.”The result is Blood, Bone, and Marrow, the first full-length biography of one of the most unlikely figures in twentieth-century American literature, a writer who emerged from a dirt-poor South Georgia tenant farm and went on to create a singularly unique voice of fiction. With books such as Scar Lover, Body, and Naked in Garden Hills, Crews opened a new window into southern life, focusing his lenson the poor and disenfranchised, the people who skinned the hogs and tended the fields, the “grits,” as Crews affectionately called his characters and himself. He lived by a code of his own design, flouting authority and baring his soul, and the stories of his whiskey-and-blood-soaked lifestyle created a myth to match any of his fictional creations. His outlaw life, his distinctive voice and the context in which he lived combine to form the elements of a singularly compelling narrative about an underappreciated literary treasure.

Описание:

From the master of Freud debunkers, the book that definitively puts an end to the myth of psychoanalysis and its creator

Since the 1970s, Sigmund Freud's scientific reputation has been in an accelerating tailspin--but nonetheless the idea persists that some of his contributions were visionary discoveries of lasting value. Now, drawing on rarely consulted archives, Frederick Crews has assembled a great volume of evidence that reveals a surprising new Freud: a man who blundered tragicomically in his dealings with patients, who in fact never cured anyone, who promoted cocaine as a miracle drug capable of curing a wide range of diseases, and who advanced his career through falsifying case histories and betraying the mentors who had helped him to rise. The legend has persisted, Crews shows, thanks to Freud's fictive self-invention as a master detective of the psyche, and later through a campaign of censorship and falsification conducted by his followers.

A monumental biographical study and a slashing critique, Freud: The Making of an Illusion will stand as the last word on one of the most significant and contested figures of the twentieth century.

Raf fighter command losses of the second world war operational losses aircraft and crews 1939-1941

Описание: During 1939-1941, Fighter Command lost around 1,000 aircrew. The reasons and circumstances for these losses are shown as crucial campaigns are enacted. Forty illustrations complement the loss details, and appendices provide Fighter Command Orders of Battle at crucial periods in the conflict, plus details of the build-up of Night Fighter Squadrons during 1941, and a list of Wing Leaders. In August 1939, on the eve of the war with Germany, Britain was ill-prepared and Fighter Command could muster only 37 operation squadrons to face the foe. Following a brief campaign in Norway, and the brave but disastrous Battle of France and retreat through Dunkirk, Britain stood alone, waiting. As the forefront of Britain's defense at this time was RAF Fighter Command, with its Hurricanes, Spitfires, Blenheims, and a few obsolete Gladiators. The inevitable onslaught began, and somehow, against vastly superior odds, the pilots, who became immortalized as the world-famed "few," repulsed the Luftwaffe during the frenetic air fighting that culminated in 'The Battle of Britain' in the summer of 1940. Germany's failure to overcome the RAF and its decision to attack Russia allowed Britain to consolidate, rebuild, and then begin to go onto the offensive. This book records operational losses on a day-by-day basis, identifying the units concerned, the crews involved, and the aircraft type, service serial number, and code letters where possible.
