Описание: Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda goes to Italy in Arvin Ahmadis newest incisive look at identity and what it means to find yourself by running away.

Eighteen-year-old Amir Azadi always knew that coming out to his Muslim family would be messy, but he wasnt expecting it to end in an airport interrogation room. Now, hes telling his side of the story to the stern-faced officer. Amir has to explain why he ran away to Rome (boys, bullies, blackmail) and what he was doing there for a month (dates in the Sistine Chapel, friends who helped him accept who he is, and, of course, drama)... all while his mom, dad, and little sister are being interrogated in the room next door.

A nuanced take on growing up brown, Muslim, and gay in todays America, How It All Blew Up by Arvin Ahmadi will delight fans of both Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agendas heartwarming plot twists and comedian Hasan Minhajs hilarious explorations of uncomfortable truths. Its the story of one boys struggle to come out to his family, and how that painful process exists right alongside his silly, sexy romp through Italy.

Описание: Perfect for fans of Warcross and Black Mirror, Girl Gone Viral is the inventive and timely story of a seventeen-year-old coder's catapult to stardom.

For seventeen-year-old Opal Hopper, code is magic. She builds entire worlds from scratch: Mars craters, shimmering lakes, any virtual experience her heart desires.

But she can't code her dad back into her life. When he disappeared after her tenth birthday, leaving only a cryptic note, Opal tried desperately to find him. And when he never turned up, she enrolled at a boarding school for technical prodigies and tried to forget.

Until now. Because WAVE, the world's biggest virtual reality platform, has announced a contest where the winner gets to meet its billionaire founder. The same billionaire who worked closely with Opal's dad. The one she always believed might know where he went. The one who maybe even murdered him.

What begins as a small data hack to win the contest spirals out of control when Opal goes viral, digging her deeper into a hole of lies, hacks, and manipulation. How far will Opal go for the answers--or is it the attention--she's wanted for years?

Описание:

For centuries, storytelling and art have been used to communicate directly to the heart. Worth a Thousand Words is a powerful example of just that. The heart-warming letters and short stories are easy to read and hard to put down. The author, Anthony Arvin, has wonderfully unique perspectives, and his insights are inspired. This book is the first volume of the series; Things I Want My Children to Know.

The masterful storytelling helps to frame important things in life in a way that resonates with all ages. Parents and grandparents appreciate the nostalgia, while younger generations love the irreverent sense of humor. This book has plenty of both. It is an eclectic mix of stories used to emphasize the importance of things like gratitude, respect, healthy relationships and personal growth. The stories and letters in this book were pulled from a collection of many hundreds written over nearly a quarter of a century. But the wisdom they bring is timeless. Love, relationships, personal growth, and inner joy are a part of every journey and every generation. Entertaining--and sometimes hilarious--explanations of these values will never go out of style.

The art in the book is significant. The illustrations are stunning, and the children will steal your heart. A throwback from old-school illustrators, Anthony brings a Norman Rockwell vibe in his art. His subjects simply move you ... you feel a connection to the children. The illustrations drive home poignant points in the book and provide an opportunity to pause and reflect. People rave about the book, but when they get their copy out to show others, it is the art they show first.

Worth a Thousand Words is the feel-good book of the season and makes a perfect gift. Give the gift of joy ... For yourself and others.

Possessing Polynesians: The Science of Settler Colonial Whiteness in Hawai`i and Oceania

Описание: From their earliest encounters with Indigenous Pacific Islanders, white Europeans and Americans asserted an identification with the racial origins of Polynesians, declaring them to be racially almost white and speculating that they were of Mediterranean or Aryan descent. In Possessing Polynesians Maile Arvin analyzes this racializing history within the context of settler colonialism across Polynesia, especially in Hawai‘i. Arvin argues that a logic of possession through whiteness animates settler colonialism, by which both Polynesia (the place) and Polynesians (the people) become exotic, feminized belongings of whiteness. Seeing whiteness as indigenous to Polynesia provided white settlers with the justification needed to claim Polynesian lands and resources. Understood as possessions, Polynesians were and continue to be denied the privileges of whiteness. Yet Polynesians have long contested these classifications, claims, and cultural representations, and Arvin shows how their resistance to and refusal of white settler logic have regenerated Indigenous forms of recognition.
