Описание: Prior to the nineteenth century, the practice of medicine in the Western world was as much art as science. But, argues W. F. Bynum, `modern` medicine as practiced today is built upon foundations that were firmly established between 1800 and the beginning of World War I.

Описание: Finalist for the 2022 Cheiron Book Prize An Organ of Murder explores the origins of both popular and elite theories of criminality in the nineteenth-century United States, focusing in particular on the influence of phrenology. In the United States, phrenology shaped the production of medico-legal knowledge around crime, the treatment of the criminal within prisons and in public discourse, and sociocultural expectations about the causes of crime. The criminal was phrenology's ideal research and demonstration subject, and the courtroom and the prison were essential spaces for the staging of scientific expertise. In particular, phrenology constructed ways of looking as well as a language for identifying, understanding, and analyzing criminals and their actions. This work traces the long-lasting influence of phrenological visual culture and language in American culture, law, and medicine, as well as the practical uses of phrenology in courts, prisons, and daily life.

Описание: The Man Who Crucified Himself is the history of a sensational medical case. In 1805, a shoemaker called Mattio Lovat attempted to crucify himself in Venice. His act caused a big stir - and the story spread all over Europe. Throughout the nineteenth century, Lovat’s case fuelled scientific and popular debates on medicine, madness, suicide and religion. Drawing on Italian, German, English and French sources, Maria Bohmer traces the multiple readings of the case and identifies various communities of interpretation. Her detailed study sheds new light not only on the history of Lovat’s case but also offers a fresh view on case narratives in general - both as an epistemic and literary genre.

Описание: Treatments of the reception of Darwinism have focused on Western Europe and North America. This book turns to Argentina in the second half of the nineteenth century. Having hosted Darwin during the voyage of the Beagle, Argentina had a claim to being the cradle of Darwinism. Such claims, together with other cultural currents placed the appropriation or rejection of Darwinism at the center of the struggle to articulate the national identity of the emerging Argentine Republic. Two chapters of original historiography are followed by eight chapters of new English translations of primary sources from the Argentine reception of Darwinism, including texts (by Domingo Sarmiento, Eduardo Holmberg, and others) well known to students of Latin American letters, but never before published in English.

Описание: Harriot Kezia Hunt was a pioneer in a number of ways. The first woman to establish a successful medical practice in the United States, she began seeing patients in Boston in 1835 and promoted a new method of treatment by listening to women's troubles or their ""heart histories."" Her unsuccessful efforts to attend lectures at Harvard's Medical School galvanized her activism in the woman's rights movement. During the 1850s she played a prominent role in the annual woman's rights conventions and was the first woman in Massachusetts to publicly protest the injustice of taxing propertied women while denying them the franchise. In this first comprehensive, full-length biography of Hunt, Myra C. Glenn shows how this single woman from a working-class Boston home became a successful physician and noted reformer, illuminating the struggle for woman's rights and the fractious and gendered nature of medicine in antebellum America.

Название: Medicine and Maladies: Representing Affliction in Nineteenth-Century France ISBN: 9004367993 ISBN-13(EAN): 9789004367999 Издательство: Brill Цена: 146110.00 T Наличие на складе: Невозможна поставка. Описание: Medicine and Maladies explores the aesthetic, medical, and socio-political contexts that informed depictions of illness and disease in nineteenth-century France. Eleven essays by specialists in nineteenth-century French literature and visual culture probe the acts of writing, reading, and viewing corporeal afflictions across the works of medical practitioners, surgeons, pharmacists, novelists, and artists. Tracing scientific discourse in literary narratives and signalling references to fiction in medical texts, the contributions to this interdisciplinary volume invite us to rethink the relationship between the humanities and the medical sciences.
The living and the dead cohabited Paris until the late eighteenth century, when, in the name of public health, measures were taken to drive the latter from the city. Cemeteries were removed from urban space, and corpses started to be viewed as terrifyingly noxious substances. The dead had fallen victim to a sustained reflection on the notions of life and death that emerged from the two new medical fields of biology and hygiene. In large part, the Paris of the nineteenth century—the Paris of modernity—arose, both theoretically and physically, out of this concern over the relations between the animate and the inanimate. As the dead became a source of pervasive and intense anxiousness, they also became an object of fascination that at once exceeded and guided the medical imagination attempting to control them. Human Remains examines that exuberant anxiety to discover the irrational, indeed erotic, forces motivating the medicalization of death. Working across a broad range of disciplines, including history, literature, the visual arts, philosophy, and psychoanalysis, the book seeks to understand the meaning of the dead and their role in creating one of the most important cities of the contemporary world.
