Описание: The first comprehensive book dedicated solely to the evaluation and treatment of cervical spine deformity! The number of cervical fusion procedures has increased in the U.S. and globally during the last decade, in part due to an aging population and higher incidence of complex cervical problems. Despite advances in the surgical treatment of cervical deformities, few resources detail modern clinical assessment, radiographic evaluation, and surgical approaches. Cervical Spine Deformity Surgery by world-renowned spine surgeons Christopher Ames, K. Daniel Riew, Justin Smith, and Kuniyoshi Abumi fills a void in the literature. It provides a concise, state-of-the-art resource on current cervical deformity knowledge compiled from the literature and recognized masters in the field. The generously illustrated text begins with a background on the marked health impact of cervical deformity. Opening chapters provide primers on the clinical and radiographic assessment of patients, malalignment and disability scores, and the physical exam. Subsequent chapters detail surgical planning and approaches for a full spectrum of cervical spine conditions, such as semi-rigid and rigid deformities, sagittal deformities, distal junctional kyphosis, congenital cervical deformity, and hemivertebra. Key Features Insightful technical nuances and pearls on managing surgical, neurological, and medical complications associated with cervical procedures, as well as risk stratification and patient frailty Diverse osteotomies including low grade, uncovertebral joint (anterior view), cervical pedicle subtraction, cervical opening wedge, upper thoracic, C1-2 joint, and cervical pedicle screw fixation Focused discussion on continuing efforts to create a clinically meaningful comprehensive cervical osteotomy classification system Neurosurgical and orthopaedic residents and practicing spine surgeons who treat patients with cervical deformities will greatly benefit from consulting this comprehensive and unique resource. Описание: Excerpt from Spinal Symmetry and Deformity

This we find to consist chiefly in a transverse and antero-posterior equipoising of the superior trunk over and upon the body's centre of gravity; and, by the aid of mathematical law, this centre is demonstrated to be located in two lumbar vertebrae. This latter is a fundamental and controlling point, which is rendered apparent by a glance at figures 1 and'2.

Описание: Excerpt from Operations for Correcting the Deformity Due to Prominent Ears

This contrivance was tried faithfully, off and on, for several months; but at the end of this time we could not see any great improvement in the position of the ears.

Case II. While these experiments were going on, a man with very prominent ears came to me at the Boston Dispensary (february 28, and ex pressed a wish that I should do an Operation upon his ears, to keep them back. He said that he was greatly annoyed by boys and others on the street, who ridiculed him on account of his deformity. The cartilage in this case was so stiff that I thought it best to excise a portion of it. Having made an elliptical incision be hind the ear, I removed a piece of skin and of cartilage of corresponding shape and size. The axis of this ellipse was vertical, that is, parallel with the adjacent side of the head. All this was done from the rear, and the skin on the anterior surface of the ear was not interfered with. The cut edges of cartilage were united by deep sutures, and the skin stitched together over them. An antiseptic dressing was applied and the ear was bandaged firmly back against the head. In this Operation I was assisted by Dr. Baldwin.

Although the wound did not heal by first intention, yet it did not gape, and when the scar had formed, the position was excellent.

In spite of the patient's assurance that he would have a similar Operation done upon the other ear he did not return at the appointed time; and I have not seen him since. He probably dreaded the pain of an other operation, for under no circumstances could I prevail upon him to take ether.

Описание: Principles of Deformity Correction is a comprehensive text on the analysis, planning, and treatment of lower limb deformities in an accessible and instructive format. It teaches the analysis, planning, and methods of deformity correction. A foundation of understanding normal alignment is presented, using new nomenclature that is easy to remember and can even be derived without memorization. The work offers detailed information on deformities and malalignment, radiographic assessment, mechanical and anatomic axis planning, osteotomies, and hardware considerations. The book is extensively illustrated to avoid confusion and to leave little to the imagination. The planning is further facilitated via an exercise workbook and an animated CD-ROM which are available separately. The methods taught are simple and intuitive and require little memorization. This book is of equal interest to pediatric and adult orthopaedic surgeons.

Disability, Deformity, and Disease in the Grimms` Fairy Tales

Описание: Although dozens of disabled characters appear in the Grimms’ Children’s and Household Tales, the issue of disability in their collection has remained largely unexplored by scholars. In Disability, Deformity, and Disease in the Grimms’ Fairy Tales, author Ann Schmiesing analyzes various representations of disability in the tales and also shows how the Grimms’ editing (or ""prostheticizing"") of their tales over seven editions significantly influenced portrayals of disability and related manifestations of physical difference, both in many individual tales and in the collection overall.Schmiesing begins by exploring instabilities in the Grimms’ conception of the fairy tale as a healthy and robust genre that has nevertheless been damaged and needs to be restored to its organic state. In chapter 2, she extends this argument by examining tales such as ""The Three Army Surgeons"" and ""Brother Lustig"" that problematize, against the backdrop of war, characters’ efforts to restore wholeness to the impaired or diseased body. She goes on in chapter 3 to study the gendering of disability in the Grimms’ tales with particular emphasis on the Grimms’ editing of ""The Maiden Without Hands"" and ""The Frog King or Iron Henry."" In chapter 4, Schmiesing considers contradictions in portrayals of characters such as Hans My Hedgehog and the Donkey as both cripple and ""supercripple"" - a figure who miraculously ""overcomes"" his disability and triumphs despite social stigma. Schmiesing examines in chapter 5 tales in which no magical erasure of disability occurs, but in which protagonists are depicted figuratively ""overcoming"" disability by means of other personal abilities or traits. The Grimms described the fairy tale using metaphors of able-bodiedness and wholeness and espoused a Romantic view of their editorial process as organic restoration. Disability, Deformity, and Disease in the Grimms’ Fairy Tales shows, however, the extent to which the Grimms’ personal experience of disability and illness impacted the tales and reveals the many disability-related amendments that exist within them. Readers interested in fairy-tales studies and disability studies will appreciate this careful reading of the Grimms’ tales.

Описание:

An Inexplicable Deformity Volume 1

This book has been painstakingly researched and written in hopes of enabling the basic humane treatment
for all those incarcerated in the United States today and in the future.

Mr. Tripati has specializations in Public International Law, Public Law, and European Law.

The Prison Litigation Reform Act (PLRA) and its counterpart the Antiterrorism And Effective Death Penalty
Act Of 1996 (AEDPA) violate Art 2.3(a) ICCPR for they require exhaustion of ineffective administrative and judicial remedies Eugene Novikov, Comment Stacking The Deck: Futility And The Exhaustion Provision Of the Prison Litigation Reform Act, 156 U. Pa .L .Rev. 817 (2008) Mark Tushnet & Larry Yackle, Symbolic Statutes And Real Laws: The Pathologies Of The Substances Of The Antiterrorism And Effective Death Penalty Act and the
PLRA, 47 Duke L.L. 1 (1997).

In Ross v Blake, (2016) No. 15-379 Justice Kagan stated "as Booth made clear an administrative procedure is unavailable when (despite what regulation or guidance materials may promise) it operates as a simple dead end...with officers unable or consistently unwilling to provide any relief to aggrieved inmates.

In short PLRA renders all remedies for prisoners ineffective within the meaning of Art. 2.3(a) ICCPR. Because of Congressional restrictions prisoners, notwithstanding the fact that they are being subjected to human rights abuses in state prisons, do not have the same access to the courts as non-prisoners, and the limited access they have are futile, under a heightened standard. During litigation prison authorities are allowed to conceal evidence of misconduct and do not have to provide the same disclosure that non prisoners are given Rule 26(a)(1)(B)(iv) Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. As such prisoners' accesses to courts violate Art. 14.1 ICCPR. Frowein and Perkert, Europaische Menschenrechts Konvention: EMRK-Kommentar; (2nd ed. 1996)

Because of PLRA prisoners are increasingly tortured, subjected to cruel, inhumane, degrading treatment and punishment in violation of Art. 7 ICCPR; Green, The European Court Of Human Rights, (2006) prisoners are not
treated with humanity as required by Art. 10.1 ICCPR; their rights to freedom of thought, conscience, religion as required by Art. 18.1 and 27 ICCPR is violated; retaliation for petitioning the courts and government is the norm in violation of Art. 25.a ICCPR. In short PLRA encourages ICCPR and human rights violations Malcolm M. Feley & Van Swearingen, The Prison Conditions Cases and The Bureaucratization Of American Corrections: Influences, Impacts and Implications; 24 Pace L. Rev. 433 (2004) describes the increase in prison litigation due to prison authorities that violation human rights How Prisoners' Rights Lawyers Are Preserving the Role Of the Courts, 69 U. Miami L. Rev.
