How can I manage this sense of self and help those whom I love manage their own identities?Real Housewives of Diplomacy sheds new and original light on these issues by focusing on the experiences, feelings, and meanings of women who decided to accompany their spouses on diplomatic assignments. Its main focus is on the implications of multiple relocations for the identities of Wives of Diplomats and their relevance to counseling psychology. It demonstrates that their experiences are a novel but relevant phenomenon that has never before received proper psychological investigation. The book’s inquiry will adopt a phenomenological philosophical standpoint that puts human experiences and meaning at the center of understanding, both for psychology and for diplomacy.

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, nationality groups have claimed sovereignty in the new republics bearing their names. With the ascendance of these titular nationality groups, Russian speakers living in the post-Soviet republics face a radical crisis of identity. That crisis is at the heart of David D. Laitin's book.Laitin portrays these Russian speakers as a "beached diaspora" since the populations did not cross international borders; the borders themselves receded. He asks what will become of these populations. Will they learn the languages of the republics in which they live and prepare their children for assimilation? Will they return to a homeland many have never seen? Or will they become loyal citizens of the new republics while maintaining a Russian identity? Through questions such as these and on the basis of ethnographic field research, discourse analysis, and mass surveys, Laitin analyzes trends in four post-Soviet republics: Estonia, Latvia, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine.Laitin concludes that the "Russian-speaking population" is a new category of identity in the post-Soviet world. This conglomerate identity of those who share a language is analogous, Laitin suggests, to such designations as "Palestinian" in the Middle East and "Hispanic" in the United States. How do second-generation migrant women connect with their cultural heritage when ethnic ties have been weak or absent for most of their lives? Family, Story and Identity presents the life stories of twenty women of various ethnicities, analysis of published autobiographies, as well as autoethnographic accounts of the author’s experiences, to show how stories connect adult children of immigrants with their cultural heritage. The collecting of stories comes in various forms and can include brief visits to ancestral homelands, documenting family histories and genealogies, and gathering stories, folktales, and recipes. Senem Mallman found that, as adults, many children of immigrants actively seek out family histories and stories in order to connect with their cultural heritage and with their parents, and to pass this knowledge on to their own children. She argues that seeking out stories enables the second-generation to find a place within their family narrative. This pursuit of stories leads them toward developing new perspectives about their culture, family and life in Australia, and new ways of living with their cultural ambivalence.
