Описание: Tropical forests are disappearing at an unaltered pace, giving way to alternative land uses. Following a survey of different deforestation definitions, theories and empirical evidence, a case-study of Ecuador provides a versatile historical picture of factors affecting forest loss throughout different periods, regions and ecosystems.

Описание: Extermination of forests is an essential part of human activity since prehistoric times. There are several reasons for this: the forest is an enemy environment hiding predators and other threats; the forest is a source for wood, which is used for firing and materials of construction; forest occupies land, which could be used for agriculture. Even now in spite of progress in ecological education, deforestation continuously accelerates everywhere. This book provides new research on the global challenges and issues on deforestation in the 21st Century.

Описание: In this book, Jan J. Boersema reconstructs the ecological and cultural history of Easter Island and critiques the hitherto accepted theory of its collapse. Drawing on historical and scientific evidence, Boersema demonstrates how Easter Island society responded to cultural and environmental change and how it was able to survive.

Описание: The Congo Basin forests have been mainly 'passively' protected by chronic political instability and conflict, poor infrastructure, and poor governance. Congo Basin countries thus still fit the profile of high forest cover/ low deforestation (HFLD) countries. However, there are signs that Congo Basin forests are under increasing pressure from a variety of sources, including mineral extraction, road development, agribusiness, and biofuels, in addition to subsistence agricultural expansion and charcoal collection.

Congo Basin countries are now at a crossroad - they are not yet locked into a development path that will necessarily come at high cost to forests. They need to find new ways of development that can simultaneously respond to the dual challenge of developing local economies and reducing poverty while limiting the negative impact of growth on the region's natural capital, and forests in particular. They can define a new path toward forest-friendly growth. The question is how to match economic change with smart measures and policy choices so that Congo Basin countries sustain and benefit from their extraordinary natural assets over the long term - in other words how to 'leapfrog' the traditional dip in forest cover usually observed in the forest transition curve.

The report Deforestation Trends in the Congo Basin: Reconciling Economic Growth and Forest Protection is the output of a two-year exercise implemented by the World Bank at the request of the COMIFAC (Regional Commission in charge of Forestry in Central Africa) and the highly-forested countries in the Congo Basin (namely Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and Republic of Congo). The study is informed by economic modelling complemented with sectoral analysis, as well as interactive simulations and workshop discussions.

This study on Deforestation Trends in the Congo Basin: Reconciling Economic Growth and Forest Protection analyses the current and future pressures exerted by different sectors of the economy on Congo Basin forests, and highlights policy options to limit deforestation while pursuing inclusive, green growth. Emerging environmental finance mechanisms, such as reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+) under the climate change negotiations, may provide additional resources to help countries protect their forests. But there are already a number of 'no-regret' actions that countries can take to grow along a sustainable development path.

Описание: The rapid pace of technological change constantly gives rise to new ethical dilemmas. This provides a practical introduction for engineering students that emphasizes ethical decision-making. The authors situate engineering ethics in the wider context of business and environmental ethics and guide students through case studies emphasizing value conflicts often encountered in engineering.

Описание: Saint Lucia’s rural landscape is more forested today than at any time in at least seventy-five years (probably much longer). This change is profoundly significant given widespread efforts to achieve sustainable development on small-island states like Saint Lucia. Yet, this seemingly good-news story runs contrary to most conventional narratives about the worsening state of the environment in the Caribbean and elsewhere. How did this remarkable change come about? What role did government, the private sector and other actors play in this? What are the links between this environmental change and wider changes in the Saint Lucian economy, politics and society? Is there more to this story than meets the eye? These questions are explored in this interdisciplinary study of changing human-environment relations since the Second World War.The Greening of Saint Lucia is based on the results of a longterm, field-based research project that began in 2006. It entails the application of a novel research methodology for doing human-environment research (ACE: abductive causal eventism) that the author co-developed with a colleague from Rutgers University. This causal-historical methodology allows for the rigorous integration of findings derived from natural and social science sources, including ecological and air photo assessments, interviews, secondary data sources, and archival investigations.

It has broader appeal to a global and non-academic audience, which can help advance policy discussions through more accessible language.
