Описание: This book studies the three concepts of translation, education and innovation from a Nordic and international perspective on Japanese and Korean societies. It presents findings from pioneering research into cultural translation, Japanese and Korean linguistics, urban development, traditional arts, and related fields. Across recent decades, Northern European scholars have shown increasing interest in East Asia. Even though they are situated on opposite sides of the Eurasia landmass, the Nordic nations have a great deal in common with Japan and Korea, including vibrant cultural traditions, strong educational systems, and productive social democratic economies. Taking a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary approach, and in addition to the examination of the three key concepts, the book explores several additional intersecting themes, including sustainability, nature, humour, aesthetics, cultural survival and social change, discourse and representation. This book offers a collection of original interdisciplinary research from the 25th anniversary conference of the Nordic Association for Japanese and Korean Studies (2013). Its 21 chapters are divided into five parts according to interdisciplinary themes: Translational Issues in Literature, Analyses of Korean and Japanese Languages, Language Education, Innovation and New Perspectives on Culture, and The Arts in Innovative Societies.

Описание:

This Guide offers an overview of theory and practice in Scripture translation from ancient times to the present--with an eye to the future. The Guide's 726 articles by 180 contributors are addressed to a global readership of Bible translators, students of culture and biblical studies, as well as interested church members and clerical leaders.

Contributing authors include Elizabeth Amaatekai Armar, Paul Ellingworth, Rim Hassen, Cynthia Miller-Naud , Christiane Nord, Douglas Robinson, R. Daniel Shaw, Ronald J. Sim, Daud Soesilo, and Ernst R. Wendland. The Guide's wide-ranging articles are gathered into three key subject areas, each helpfully contexted by an introductory essay by the volume editor Noss:

1. People -- The individuals presented include innovators and tireless advocates, from Jerome and Wulfila in Antiquity to Luther, Tyndale and Diodati in Reformation era Europe; from missionary translators like Ross and Nylander to mother-tongue translators like Yajiro and Su-Jung Lee; and includes modern-day translation scholars like E.A. Nida, K.L. Pike, and W.C. Townsend. Insert "Read More/Read Less" prompt here]

2. Languages -- Besides concise, insightful looks at the original biblical languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek) and languages contemporaneous with the original languages, the Guide looks at 170 languages, most still spoken, that have been the recipients of key Bible translations over the past 500 years.

3. Topics -- The final, and largest, section provides perspectives on translation in relation to the translation text. Extended essays (e.g., Figurative language; Translation theory and Bible translation) provide context and perspective on challenging issues; others address the practical issues faced by translators (Citation and allusion; Gender and grammar); and still others provide concise treatments of key terms (Language Taboo; Periphrasis; Ideophones).

Reader helps include 45 illustration (photographs, text samples, tables, graphics), 50 pages of detailed references, a Languages Index, and a Thematic Guide to Topics.

Описание: The book series is dedicated to the study of the multifaceted dynamics of wordplay as an interface phenomenon. The contributions aim to bring together approaches from various disciplines and present case studies on different communicative settings, including everyday language and literary communication, and thus offer fresh perspectives on wordplay in the context of linguistic innovation, language contact, and speaker-hearer-interaction. Описание: Chinese Translation Studies in the 21st Century, which presents a selection of some of the best articles published in the journal Perspectives in a five-year period (2012-2017), highlights the vitality of Translation Studies as a profession and as a field of enquiry in China. As the country has gradually opened up to the West, translation academic programmes have burgeoned to cater for the needs of Chinese corporations and political institutions. The book is divided into four sections, in which authors explore theoretical and conceptual issues (such as the connection between translation and adaptation, multimodality, and the nature of norms), audiovisual translation (including studies on news translation and the translation of children’s movies), bibliographies and bibliometrics (to assess, for example, the international visibility of Chinese scholars), and interpreting (analyzing pauses in simultaneous interpreting and sign language among other aspects). The book brings together well-established authors and younger scholars from universities in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.

This book explores the influence of culture and cognition on translation and communication and brings together revised versions of papers delivered at the First International TransLingua Conference, organized in 2015 by the Institute of Modern Languages and Applied Linguistics and the Department of English at Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz, Poland. The volume investigates various languages and cultures (including Japanese, Hungarian, English, Czech, Polish, German and Swahili) and examines a range of linguistic and translation issues from a micro-scale perspective. Alongside these case studies, it also includes reflections by two internationally renowned scholars, El?bieta Tabakowska and Zolt?n K?vecses, on the interplay between language, culture and cognition and the influence of collective and individual memory on translation.

Описание:

While the sociology of literary translation is well-established, and even flourishing, the same cannot be said for the sociology of poetry translation. Sociologies of Poetry Translation features scholars who address poetry translation from sociological perspectives in order to catalyze new methods of investigating poetry translation. This book makes the case for a move from the singular 'sociology of poetry translation' to the pluralist 'sociologies', in order to account for the rich variety of approaches that are currently emerging to deal with poetry translation. It also aims to bridge the gap between the 'cultural turn' and the 'sociological turn' in Translation Studies, with the range of contributions showcasing the rich diversity of approaches to analysing poetry translation from socio-cultural, socio-historical, socio-political and micro-social perspectives.

Contributors draw on theorists including Pierre Bourdieu and Niklas Luhmann and assess poetry translation from and/or into Catalan, Czech, English, French, German, Italian, Russian, Slovakian, Spanish, Swahili and Swedish. A wide range of topics are featured in the book including: trends in poetry translation in the modern global book market; the commissioning and publishing of poetry translations in the United States of America; modern English-language translations of Dante; women poet-translators in mid-19th century Ireland; translations of Russian poetry anthologies into modern English; the translation of Shakespeare's plays and sonnets in post-colonial Tanzania and socialist Czechoslovakia; translations and translators of Italian poetry into 20th and 21st century Sweden; modern European poet-translators; and collaborative writing between prominent English and Spanish poet-translators.
