A new annotated translation in elegant English prose of this masterpiece of European Romantic literature. Pan Tadeusz is a classic tale of mystery, war and patriotism set in the turbulent Napoleonic era. First published in 1834 in Paris, it has been called "the last epos" in world literature. The story takes place over the course of five days in 1811 and two days in 1812. The old Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth lies dismembered, erased from the political map of Europe by the great powers of Russia, Prussia, and Austria. A brief ray of hope rekindles national hopes in 1807 when Napoleon establishes the Duchy of Warsaw by the terms of the Treaty of Tilsit and prepares to invade Russia. The oft-overshadowed counterpoint to War and Peace and the 1812 Overture.
This is the first major rendering of this work since 1993 by one of the great translators of the Polish language Christopher Adam Zakrzewski.

Автор: Lewandowski Tadeusz Название: Red Bird, Red Power: The Life and Legacy of Zitkala-Sa ISBN: 0806164530 ISBN-13(EAN): 9780806164533 Издательство: Mare Nostrum (Eurospan) Рейтинг: Цена: 18350.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: Red Bird, Red Power tells the story of one of the most influential - and controversial - American Indian activists of the twentieth century. Zitkala-?a (1876-1938), also known as Gertrude Simmons Bonnin, was a highly gifted writer, editor, and musician who dedicated her life to achieving justice for Native peoples. Here, Tadeusz Lewandowski offers the first full-scale biography of the woman whose passionate commitment to improving the lives of her people propelled her to the forefront of Progressive-era reform movements. Lewandowski draws on a vast array of sources, including previously unpublished letters and diaries, to recount Zitkala-?a's unique life journey. Her story begins on the Dakota plains, where she was born to a Yankton Sioux mother and a white father. Zitkala-?a, whose name translates as ""Red Bird"" in English, left home at age eight to attend a Quaker boarding school, eventually working as a teacher at Carlisle Indian Industrial School. By her early twenties, she was the toast of East Coast literary society. Her short stories for the Atlantic Monthly (1900) are, to this day, the focus of scholarly analysis and debate. In collaboration with William F. Hanson, she wrote the libretto and songs for the innovative Sun Dance Opera (1913). And yet, as Lewandowski demonstrates, Zitkala-?a's successes could not fill the void of her lost cultural heritage, nor dampen her fury toward the Euro-American establishment that had robbed her people of their land. In 1926, she founded the National Council of American Indians with the aim of redressing American Indian grievances. Zitkala-?a's complex identity has made her an intriguing - if elusive - subject for scholars. In Lewandowski's sensitive interpretation, she emerges as a multifaceted human being whose work entailed constant negotiation. In the end, Lewandowski argues, Zitkala-?a's achievements distinguish her as a forerunner of the Red Power movement and an important agent of change.

Описание: Captain Baczkowski's extraordinary memoirs, those of a young Polish cavalry officer, covers his life story from childhood to his great wish of becoming a cavalry officer being fulfilled a few years before the outbreak of World War 2. His idyllic life was shattered by the German invasion on 1st September 1939. The crux of the memoirs are his wartime experiences during the Polish 1939 Campaign when he commanded a bicycle platoon in the 19th Lancers Regiment, taking part in the well-known Battle of Mokra when the Volhynian Cavalry Brigade held up a German Panzer Division. Following the fall of Poland, he escaped across the mountains into Hungary from whence to France to join the reforming Polish Army. After the collapse of France, he was evacuated with the remnants of the Polish Army to Britain to continue the fight against Nazi Germany. He saw service in Scotland and then joined the British Army in West Africa as part of a scheme where 400 Polish officers received short time commissions in the British Army. On his return to the Polish Army he was posted to the 1st Armoured Division and took part in the North West Europe Campaign. His story ends with his decision to remain in exile after the Soviet takeover of Poland in 1945, service with the Polish Resettlement Corps and first tentative steps in creating a new life in London. His love of horses forms a continuous theme throughout his life.

This book is a comprehensive approach to interpreting Frank O’Hara’s highly influential work. Frank O’Hara’s poetry, initially inspired by the Modernist avant-garde, underwent a radical change around 1960. This change parallels the decline of Abstract Expressionism and the rise of Pop Art. The book includes historical contextualization as well as practical criticism. The author analyzes how Frank O’Hara could be regarded. As a Modernist poet, or as one who realizes that the aesthetic of High Modernism is on the wane, and is preparing himself for a paradigmatic change. Earlier poems are best seen as Modernist/avant-gardist, while the later ones as no less vanguard forays into uncharted territory. While the book takes up issues such as mimeticism, realism and abstraction in both poetry and painting, the boredom of the new as seen by Walter Benjamin, and the representational potential of the camp aesthetic, the main emphasis is on practical criticism, modes of reading O’Hara’s ?uvre.
