Since the 1990s, there has been unparalleled growth in the literary output from an ever more diverse group of Latinx writers. Extant criticism, however, has yet to catch up with the diversity of writers we label Latinx and the range of themes about which they write. Little sustained scholarly attention has been paid, moreover, to the very category under which we group this literature. Latinx Literature Unbound, thus, begins with a fundamental question “What does it mean to label a work of literature or an entire corpus of literature Latinx?” From this question others emerge: What does Latinx allow or predispose us to see, and what does it preclude us from seeing? If the grouping—which brings together a heterogeneous collection of people under a seemingly homogeneous label—tells us something meaningful, is there a poetics we can develop that would facilitate our analysis of this literature? In answering these questions, Latinx Literature Unbound frees Latinx literature from taken-for-granted critical assumptions about identity and theme. It argues that there may be more salubrious taxonomies than Latinx for organizing and analyzing this literature. Privileging the act of reading as a temporal, meaning-making event, Ralph E. Rodriguez argues that genre may be a more durable category for analyzing this literature and suggests new ways we might proceed with future studies of the writing we have come to identify as Latinx.

Quinceañera celebrations, which recognize a girl’s transition to young womanhood at age fifteen, are practiced in Latinx communities throughout the Americas. But in the consumer-driven United States, the ritual has evolved from a largely religious ceremony to an elaborate party where social status takes center stage. Examining the many facets of this contemporary debut experience, Quinceañera Style reports on ethnographic fieldwork in California, Texas, the Midwest, and Mexico City to reveal a complex, compelling story. Along the way, we meet a self-identified transwoman who uses the quinceañera as an intellectual space in her activist performance art. We explore the economic empowerment of women who own barrio boutiques specializing in the quinceañera’s many accessories and made-in-China gowns. And, of course, we meet teens themselves, including a vlogger whose quince-planning tips have made her an online sensation.
Disrupting assumptions, such as the belief that Latino communities in the United States can’t desire upward mobility without abandoning ethnoracial cultural legacies, Quinceañera Style also underscores the performative nature of class and the process of constructing a self in the public, digital sphere.

This chapter provides the rationale for addressing the health and safety of Latinx migrant and seasonal farmworkers in the eastern US as a justice issue. It provides an introduction to the volume and a summary of the chapters.
2. Latinx farmworkers and farm work in the eastern US: The context for health, safety, and justice (Arcury, Mora) This chapter provides a description of Latinx farmworkers in the eastern US, summarizing statistical sources (e.g., US Census of Agriculture, US Department of Commerce) and the general literature on their number, demographic characteristics, and living conditions (migrant housing). Although remaining largely Latinx over the past three decades, many characteristics of the farmworker population have continued to change during the past decade. For example, all farmworkers are contingent workers, but due to political forces and an increase in year-round agricultural production in some places, fewer are migrant workers and more are seasonal workers. Among those who migrate, a growing number have temporary H-2A work visas, which limits the number accompanied by their partners and children. More seasonal workers have children who are US citizens. Understanding the current characteristics of the Latinx farmworker population is essential to improving occupational justice through workplace health and safety policy and improving access to health care.
3. Occupational injuries and illnesses of farmworkers in the eastern US (Arcury, Quandt, Rhodes, Arnold)
This chapter provides an overview of the occupational injuries and illnesses experienced by Latinx farmworkers in the eastern US, and the processes (policy, regulations, organization of work) needed to reduce the rates of injuries and illnesses. Some injuries and illnesses, including heat stress, musculoskeletal disorders, pesticide poisoning, and trauma, are common across agricultural work. Heat stress may be exacerbated by climate change. Other injuries and illness, such as infectious diseases, stress, and mental illness, are more specific to farmworkers due to crowded housing and separation from families. Nicotine poisoning (green tobacco sickness) is specific to the eastern US, where tobacco is produced. Understanding the current types and levels of occupational injury and illness of the Latinx farmworker population is essential to improving occupational justice through workplace health and safety policy and improving access to health care.
4. Occupational health, safety, and context of dairy and livestock workers (Sexsmith)
Dairy operations require a daily work commitment throughout the year. Many dairy farmers are aging, and finding American workers for this demanding work is difficult. Many dairy farms have hired Latinx workers to meet their labor needs. Similarly, many poultry and hog confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) (referred to as factory farms) require difficult labor that many American workers do not want. This chapter details the work conditions encountered by these dairy, poultry, and livestock workers; the health and safety of these workers; and changes needed to ensure their occupational justice.

In fact, as of 2014 Latinx students comprised more than half of all K-12 public school enrollment in New Mexico, California, and Texas (Snyder, de Bley, & Dillow, 2017). Given this enrollment growth, there has been an increasing urgency in the field of educational leadership to prepare and support all leaders, but also uniquely Latinx educational leaders that have rich cultural and linguistic connections to communities, who can understand and meet the needs of Latinx students and families (Murakami, Valle, & Méndez-Morse, 2013; Sanchez, Thornton, & Usinger, 2009).Additionally, the number of degrees awarded to Latinxs at all levels increased dramatically between 2003-04 and 2013-14: bachelor’s degrees more than doubled from 94,644 to 202,412, master’s degrees conferred rose from 29,806 to 55,965, and doctor’s degrees went from 5,795 to 10,665 (Musu-Gillette, et al., 2017). However, when compared to all other racial/ethnic groups, Latinxs were awarded only 11% of all bachelor’s degrees, 9% of all master’s degrees, and 7% of all doctor’s degrees in 2013-14. Thus, an urgency remains to address continued concerns related to Latino access, persistence and matriculation in higher education (Pérez Huber, Huidor, Malagón, Sánchez, & Solórzano, 2006). In particular, there has been an increasing urgency to consider how higher education institutions can better prepare, develop, and retain Latinx leaders and scholars (in K-12 and higher education), as well as develop leaders who can serve and meet the needs of Latinx college students to ensure their academic success (Castellanos & Gloria, 2007; Ponjuan, 2012; Valle & Rodríguez, 2012). Within queer, transgender, and Latinx and Chicanx cultural politics, brown transgender narratives are frequently silenced and erased. Brown trans subjects are treated as deceptive, unnatural, nonexistent, or impossible, their bodies, lives, and material circumstances represented through tropes and used as metaphors. Restoring personhood and agency to these subjects, Francisco J. Galarte advances “brown trans figuration” as a theoretical framework to describe how transness and brownness coexist within the larger queer, trans, and Latinx historical experiences.
Brown Trans Figurations presents a collection of representations that reveal the repression of brown trans narratives and make that repression visible and palpable. Galarte examines the violent deaths of two transgender Latinas and the corresponding narratives that emerged about their lives, analyzes the invisibility of brown transmasculinity in Chicana feminist works, and explores how issues such as transgender politics can be imagined as part of Chicanx and Latinx political movements.
