The colonial wars that raged in northeastern America from 1688 until 1760 pitted France, her colonists in New France and Acadia, and her aboriginal First Nations allies against the might of the British Empire, her colonists, militias, and aboriginal allies. One of the most frequently contested areas during these conflicts were the French colony of Acadia and, after its capture by Great Britain in 1710, the new British colony of Nova Scotia. Acadia was the launchpad for frequent French and First Nations raids into Maine and New England. The British sought to stop these attacks by capturing Port-Royal, the capital of French Acadia, and subduing or winning the favor of the First Nations tribes. The British, with the support of their New England militia, captured and held Port Royal beginning in 1710 and renamed the place Annapolis Royal.
Yet British control over the remainder of old Acadia proved elusive. Time after time, the French and First Nations struck at Annapolis and the British fishing settlement at Canso, Nova Scotia, hoping to reclaim the territory for the French Crown. The eff ort was in vain. Beginning in 1755, Great Britain mustered a significant force that not only drove the French military from Nova Scotia but was used to expel the remaining majority French Acadian population from the British colony. By 1760, Great Britain was victorious in Nova Scotia, and the First Nations were required to come into a final series of treaty and trade accommodations with the English. The Acadians trickled back to their old homeland to begin a new life under an uncontested British rule.

In this tale of the American Revolution, Bryan Hawkins sees his quiet existence as a farmer at Chignecto, Nova Scotia shattered by a rebellion against the British Authorities. Staying true to his Oath to King George III, Hawkins reprises his role from the French and Indian War as a ranger, now battling the revolutionaries, attempting to prevent a possible First Nations revolt and thwarting plots by the French Crown. Rooted in the colonial history of Eastern Canada and mid-coast Maine, this story details many of the actual land and sea battles that rocked Nova Scotia in the late 18th Century.

Conscious uncoupling, single parenting, dating and mating. Throw in career reinvention, a fiscal meltdown to rival the GFC, and a determination to have some fun along the way, it's clear one Gap Year was never going to be enough
Facing a crumbling marriage, an insecure financial future, and the daunting prospect of single parenthood, Nathy Gaffney was scared. At the age of forty-seven, it felt like all her friends had their acts together, while she was a struggling actress flailing for a lifeline. Would she survive her menopausal mid-life reinvention?
In her no-holds-barred memoir The Gap Year(s), Gaffney takes readers on a raw and rollicking odyssey through heartbreak, utter resolve, and ultimate redemption. Refusing to take on the role society designates for women in their middle-aged years, Gaffney opts for possibility and transformation (with a liberal sprinkling of sexual renaissance). With courage and relentless enthusiasm, she shape-shifts herself and her life into what she wants it to become, not what society thinks it should be.
In a voice that is authentic, relatable and deeply human, Gaffney pours her greatest fears and disappointments onto these pages of her memoir. It's an inspiring journey that leads Gaffney to retire from her wilting acting career and reinvent herself as a successful leadership coach, and to find (and very nearly lose) fresh new love in the arms of an adventure seeking high altitude mountaineer twenty years her junior.
The Gap Years is a story of hope and empowerment and refusing to settle for less than what you deserve.
