This is the first volume of a multi-volume project to republish all of the Integrity articles as they appeared between 1946 and 1956. This first volume includes the first three issues in 1946 (October - December). The original issues were edited by Ed Willock and Carol Jackson. They were replaced by Dorothy Dohen in 1952. Here follows an excerpt from the editorial for the first issue:
In this first issue we are elaborating on the theme of our whole magazine, which is: We must make a new synthesis of Religion and Life. Possibly the Church has other tasks yet more urgent today, but this job is certainly high up on the agenda. It looks like the basic problem for us, who are lay people. Anyhow, we have chosen it as our special work to help solve it, and every issue will bear on the main thesis....
Integral Catholicism is already becoming a popular expression. It does not mean piety so much as wholeness. It means that what we profess to believe is consistent with the assumed principle by which we live out our daily lives. It suggests a consistency of theory and practice; a unity of public life and private morals; a reconciliation of commercial ethics and religious dogma, of individual conscience and statutory law. It means a cessation of the uneasy Sunday-lipservice-to-God-and-40-hours-a-week-with-time-and-onehalf-for-overtime-devotion-to-Mammon by which so many of our lives are compromised. The relationship between "wholeness" and "holiness" is as direct as the derivation of the second word from the first. It becomes daily more difficult to lead holy lives in disregard of the contradictory nature of the circumstances thereof. The guiding policy of contemporary society is expediency. Don't act from high moral principles (it's impractical). Don't commit yourself either to thorough-going villainy (it isn't nice). Just compromise, adjust, submit, water down, and make the best of a bad situation (after all, we have to eat). Our expediency looks less and less like the "sane policy of realistic leaders" and more and more like the degrading opportunism of ignoble men. Integrity is at the opposite pole from expediency. It is a quality which does not look first to the financial consideration involved, does not calculate its actions to please high worldly powers, or with an eye to the coming elections. It does not hold that the end justifies the means, but that we must do what is right, come what may. We hope to achieve it ourselves and in our magazine

From the Editor's Note:
This is the second volume of a multi-volume project to republish all of the Integrity issues published from 1946 to 1956. The original editors were Carol Jackson Robinson (1911-2002) and Edward Willock (1916-1960). Dorothy Dohen (1924-1984) succeeded them as editor in 1952.
This volume features the first six issues for 1947. We have included a number of footnotes in order to provide more context into what was written at that time - events or people which may not be as readily known in 2020.
We wish to acknowledge the work of The Angelus Press for first re-introducing Integrity to the general public. Our work differs insofar as we wish to re-introduce the entire corpus to the general public since these issues are relatively difficult to find and could be of lasting importance to future generations who wish to read about the intellectual climate of the Catholic Church in the United States after World War II.
The Integrity writers become more focused in their analysis of issues such as: the family, education, the socio-economic order, fatherhood, Protestantism, and the relationship between the Faith's practice and its involvement in the governance of society. Such issues were perhaps overlooked at that time by the more mainstream Catholic periodicals, but if the feedback we have received from the first volume is any indication, Integrity has not lost any of its relevance.
Our goal is to initiate a discussion among informed Catholics about the issue of the integration of daily life and Faith in the modern world.
We are certainly aware that some of the conclusions made by these authors will be hotly debated, but for us the important point is that a serious effort was made to look at these issues from a Catholic view. Can we fault them for wishing to critique modern society as Catholics? How precisely are we to view contemporary problems affecting the life of the believer? Is the Faith merely a set of devotional principles with no bearing on society at large? Let the reader decide if their attempt at tackling such a wide-range of problems was successful or not.
We would be remiss not to acknowledge the contributions of those who helped with the transcription of these issues. Their generosity and time given to help with this volume will not be forgotten.
This book is the second in Carol Robinson's Collected Works series. Her penetrating and original analysis of the modern world show the fruit of a mind absorbed in the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas - her life-long companion. We hope that these essays will help Catholics understand how the Faith has importance for the totality of their lives which must not be hidden away from the public square.
Excerpt from the Foreword
"Christianity, when it is orthodox, is a religion of the heart, but not one of sentimentality. Catholicism in all its tradition has been a religion illuminating the mind so that the spirit might find dwelling with God.
Confusion and discomfort: this is the prospect of embracing the Gospel in the modern world. Add to these the incomprehension or enmity from others, and you have a potent source of discouragement to living an integral and integrated Catholic life today.
Must it be so?
The Good One of course remains ever the same in charity and omnipotence, so the root and source of all holiness is still sound. The unknown factor then must lie in the hearts of men if Christianity is to be put into action. There will always be some - "the world" - who will consistently resist the grace and action of the Almighty. Holding this book, it must be otherwise with us. Faith has been given, grace has taken root, and so must the flourishing of fidelity and holiness. Is this the happiness we seek?....
The Beatitudes act as a defibrillator to these lethal conditions, should we choose to listen. They re-animate the soul by enkindling charity and warmth within a heart that has grown cold. And everyone knows that without a healthy heart one eventually dies for good." - Fr. James Doran
Excerpt from the Introduction
"Carol Jackson Robinson's Eightfold Kingdom Within is a noteworthy attempt to communicate Thomas' developed thought of the Beatitudes to a non-academic audience, and while she does eschew any discussion of the intricacies of doctrinal development, subjects of undoubted interest to the historical theologians, nonetheless her series of remarkable articles reveal that Robinson was a careful and highly insightful reader of Aquinas. Over the course of her essays, Robinson rightly focuses on the task of placing the Beatitudes and their attendant Gifts once again at the center of Christian spiritual life. Perhaps Robinson's insightfulness is most evident in the way she grasps that for Thomas, and indeed for much of the Christian tradition both East and West, the purpose and aim of the spiritual life is deification, what she refers to as the ongoing process of "being supernaturalized." Moreover, Robinson stresses that this process of conversion, of becoming progressively more deiform, perforce requires our adoption as earthly children of the heavenly Father. If truth be told, that the process cannot proceed at all unless, like obedient children, we meekly receive the divine instigation of the Spirit, for only in this manner will we be established "firmly in the family of God our Father." - Gregorio Montejo, PhD (Assistant Professor of Historical Theology, Boston College)

A true story about scams
An elderly family member gets caught up in playing the scam games. It starts with an e-mail from a stranger from a foreign country saying that she has won a large amount of money and all she needs to do is to send in a fee to receive it. Over a period of years, these e-mails turn into frequent phone calls and suggestions that these people are watching her and may come to her home. The scamee begins to send money, and the process begins. The amount of money starts out small and ends up being a huge amount being sent to these unknown persons. The family notices that mail being sent to the home is from unknown addresses and frequently. The first thing the family does is to approach the family member herself and ask her to stop this behavior. When this does not work, they contact business bureaus, local authorities, and other organizations. They are glad to receive the information but can't help because the scams originated from foreign countries. The scamee shows characteristics of being much like an addict because of the highs and lows she exhibits.
She sells her expensive personal possessions, even her car, in order to support her habits. She goes to neighbors, even the church, and begs for donations for her cause.
At one point, two friends gave her $10,000 each. The extended family becomes extremely frustrated and has run out of options to help her.
Even close friends try to no avail.
It continued to the end until her passing, at which time she was unhappy and lost everything.

EXTRACT FROM CHAPTER 4:
One of Kurt Jackson's appealing concepts is that the ocean is one of the last true wildernesses left on the planet. It's an idea that I found very interesting when he explained it to me when we first met in St Just. I took it that he meant a spiritual as well as an ecological or natural wilderness. Jackson's art can thus be seen as an art that is the border region between humanity and nature, between culture and nature, as well as literally tackling that area - the coast - which is neither land nor sea.
Note that Kurt Jackson is always facing outwards from the land, and looking towards the ocean, not painting with his back to the sea, and looking towards the land (and notice that the many boats and ships and helicopters and such in this area are left out of the paintings, too).
So Jackson's Porth series, about Priest Cove, and all of his sea paintings, are very important in his art in articulating this idea of the ocean as the last wilderness. 'Have you ever wondered what's out there?' is a question that Kurt Jackson asks (it's the title of one of his major paintings, too - the centrepiece of the Porth series).
Jackson has repeated the question over a number of related works: the title of two 2004 pieces is The Last Wilderness In Western Europe? This was painted on Jura (in Scotland), and both pictures are consciously emptied of human marks - just empty moorland and a delicate blue sky. An earlier picture, part of the Cape series, was entitled Do You Ever Wonder What's Out There? (1999) - an unusual composition in the Jackson oeuvre which puts the horizon very high, and focusses on the dark blue ocean flecked with white spray.
Kurt Jackson isn't that interested in many of the connotations of the ocean - the moon, time, goddesses, rebirth (though moons do appear in his art from time to time). He's not really interested in religious or pagan or magical symbols in that way. And he's not that interested in shipping, fishing, and all things maritime, like J.M.W. Turner was.
But when Jackson asks a question like 'have you ever wondered what's out there?', and considers the sea as one of the last wildernesses, that alters the interpretation of his sea paintings. It doesn't apply to all of them, though: in plenty of paintings (and not only the smaller or more modest ones), Jackson is not thinking in terms of big themes. But when he titles a painting Have You Ever Wondered What's Out There? (and writes the title in big letters across the painting), it's clearly intended to resonate in the viewer at a deeper level.
