Описание: An exploration of how contemporary art reframes and humanizes migration, calling for coexistence--the recognition of the interdependence of beings. In Art for Coexistence, art historian Christine Ross examines contemporary art's response to migration, showing that art invites us to abandon our preconceptions about the current "crisis"--to unlearn them--and to see migration more critically, more disobediently. We (viewers in Europe and North America) must come to see migration in terms of coexistence: the interdependence of beings. The artworks explored by Ross reveal, contest, rethink, delink, and relink more reciprocally the interdependencies shaping migration today--connecting citizens-on-the-move from some of the poorest countries and acknowledged citizens of some of the wealthiest countries and democracies worldwide. These installations, videos, virtual reality works, webcasts, sculptures, graffiti, paintings, photographs, and a rescue boat, by artists including Banksy, Ai Weiwei, Alejandro Gonzбlez Iсбrritu, Laura Waddington, Tania Bruguera, and others, demonstrate art's power to mediate experiences of migration. Ross argues that art invents a set of interconnected calls for more mutual forms of coexistence: to historicize, to become responsible, to empathize, and to story-tell. Art history, Ross tells us, must discard the legacy of imperialist museology--which dissocializes, dehistoricizes, and depoliticizes art. It must reinvent itself, engaging with political philosophy, postcolonial, decolonial, Black, and Indigenous studies, and critical refugee and migrant studies.
Our Life Our Way: A Memoir of Active Faith, Profound Faith and Courageous Disability Rights explores an extraordinary love story grown out of engagement with both disability rights advocacy and Christian faith communities. This important memoir contains thoughtful, often-entertaining, and sometimes heart-wrenching anecdotes of a couple's journey to create their profoundly intimate relationship and Christian marriage, in a world not yet ready for them.
William Rush and Christine Robinson's timely meeting, when the United States was close to granting civil rights to all Americans with disabilities, sets the stages for their intensely human and difficult journey of breaking down many societal and systemic barriers to full participation in the larger society.
How will the couple deal with the local KKK grand dragon who is threatening William, an outspoken person with a significant disability? How will they respond to posturing state politicians using persons with disabilities as bargaining chips with potentially dire consequences? How will they react to well-meaning but not always well-informed government officials pushing quick fixes? Against such opposition, can they create their own life, supported by their local disability rights and Christian faith communities?
Girded by a local Christian congregation's willingness to engage with this nontraditional couple, their faith is tested and grows stronger through much adversity. Faith-filled acts of mercy and grace and active and meaningful participation provide restoration on their arduous journey. Deepening their relationship with God results in a desire for a Christian marriage.
Through a series of vignettes, several deeply human themes are explored: developing enduring relationships, standing up for one's rights and advocating for one's needs, and what it means to growing deeply in love with a faithful God while tribulations abound. Through sheer grit, they model for each of us how to create our own lives, our own way.

We live in a world where there never seems to be enough time for all we want and need to do. In Sacred Time: Embracing an Intentional Way of Life, Christine Valters Paintner guides us as we move beyond our own lives and embrace a world that urges us toward rest, reflection, and growth.
In Sacred Time, Paintner, abbess of the online Abbey of the Arts, shows us how by becoming in tune with the rhythms of the natural world, we can live more intentionally and experience a conversion toward a more expansive way of being. Paintner introduces us to the eight cycles of sacred time that exist in our everyday lives. These cycles that can ground us through our busy lives are
breath,
rhythms of the day,
weekly rhythms and Sabbath rest,
waxing and waning lunar cycles,
seasons of the year,
seasons of a lifetime,
ancestral time, and
cosmic time.
Each cycle encourages us to mindfully consider the time that passes as quickly as each breath and as slowly as the passing of generations. Within each cycle, we find wisdom from sacred tradition and the saints, including St. Benedict, St. Ignatius of Loyola, and St. Hildegard of Bingen; room for growth; and the presence of the Divine. Along the way, we are also given scriptural guidance, and we are invited to spiritual practices and creative explorations that will help deepen our understanding of each cycle, allow that understanding to take root in our lives, and expand our lives beyond the pressures of each da

Описание: A mother traces her daughter's years-long battle with addiction in this compelling memoir that opens a raw and honest dialogue about substance abuse. A mother's first, most basic instinct is to protect her child. Christine Naman's daughter Natalie was the light of her life. She was a spirited child with sparkling eyes who was growing up and finding her way in the world. But by adolescence, she had ended up on the wrong road, meeting the wrong kind of people. Natalie was a full-blown addict, caught in a self-destructive spiral that was destroying her life and taking her family along for the nightmarish journey. Christine wondered how she could have missed the warning signs. Was there anything she could do to save Natalie from herself? About Natalie tells one woman's heartbreaking story, one that is played out in homes across the country, and reveals the rollercoaster of emotions that loving an addict unearths. There is despair and joy; denial and acceptance; rage and tranquility. Christine's reflections as she traces her daughter's life are interspersed with Natalie's compelling poems that tell the unvarnished truth of her side of this struggle: "I have handcuffs on/And no one can see them/My screams are so loud /Yet no one can hear 'em". By sharing the difficult days of isolation, pain, and humiliation that being the parent of an addict can bring, Naman offers comfort and consolation to others in similar circumstances. Ultimately, About Natalie is a story of loving no matter what, keeping the faith, battling hard, and getting back on the right road.

Описание: World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II created devastation across the world and drove millions of immigrants to the United States. Many generations relive their families' strength, courage, loyalty, and grit. We tell and re-tell stories. We look at frayed black-and-white photographs. We read letters written by soldiers to their loved ones. We write our own memories of stories we've been told. We collaborate with family members to write memoirs and books. We try to recreate history. After our cousin Stephanie Tramdack Cash passed away in 2017, we cousins began talking about a project to celebrate our Latvian heritage. Our goal was to document and preserve the Tramdack family history, and to make it accessible for future generations. To paraphrase Stephanie's brother Philip, without this, all of our memories and information will float away down the river. As this project evolved, so did the topics. Memories surfaced and came together to tell our family's story. Although this book focuses on the most impactful events from 1906 through World War II, information about our culture is included, as well as brief profiles of our parents, aunts, uncles, and ourselves. The Family Tree goes back to 1840 and includes our generation and the next.
Do you feel lost? Disconnected? Like you're just going through the motions?
When you don't know the next step to take, God's grace empowers you with a way forward. His hope offers an anchor for the soul and a way to get back on track. His faithfulness declares that wherever you are now, he is always ready to bring you home.
As a respected Bible teacher, author, and activist, Christine Caine knew that Jesus was her only anchor. But after an especially difficult season, she found herself drifting, unsure if she wanted to keep going the way she always had and asking, "How did I get here?" as she struggled to return to the steadiness of God's purpose for her. Where she once wanted to take ground, she now just wanted to take cover. It was a bewildering and disorienting place to be--one you may also have found yourself in before.
With refreshing candor and relatable humor, Christine offers biblical insights helping you
identify nine signs you are drifting off course and realign with God's purpose;
ask the right questions about your relationships with God, others, and your own heart so you can stay anchored in truth despite the world's shifting currents;
move from a what-if faith to an even-if faith as you discover how to trust God more deeply; and
wrestle honestly with your soul's longings so we can respond to all the ways God answers--even when it feels like he doesn't.
Writing for all who feel empty of the spiritual passion they once knew, Christine vulnerably shares her journey of turning her eyes back to Jesus in her thoughts, prayers, actions, and the hard questions she asked along the way.
