Описание:

In this second volume of "The fashion trends of Ackermann's Repository" we look into the next 5 years of the life of the periodical, from 1814 until the end of 1818.
At this time of his life Rudolph Ackermann is an established print seller, book-seller, publisher and businessman, among other successful ventures.
His Repository of Arts shop has grown and now consists of gallery, tea room, circulating library, and he hosts a regular evening talk for invited guests. The periodical is successful and well established, boosting thousands of subscribers.
By this time he has created a recognizable brand, especially with his coloured plates, and without subscribing to any political views himself, R. Ackermann continues to deliver cutting edge information on current movements in politics and culture. In its pages The Repository continues to exhibit artwork by those who were not admitted into the Royal Academy, such as engravers, draftsmen and colorists.
Ackermann successfully establishes business based on hand coloured aquatint plates, and in 1818 this has made him one of the first British publishers to operate and own lithography press, which explains the appearance of more lithography plates on the pages of the magazine during this period.

This instalment of the series starts with the 11th volume of the publication and ends with volume 6 of the second series. After volume 14 the original series ends, and the second series begin in December of 1815 with volume 1

anew. What necessitated the change was Ackermann's eventual realization that the primary audience of The Repository should be women, and shifted the tone and content of articles toward women, including fashion and cultural events as the primary topics. His shift, along with that of other publishers, encouraged " female consumption by characterizing it as a patriotic and virtuous exhibition of taste in the home." ( Bermingham; Katherine D. Harris).

As of January 1816 the periodical continues with revamped content as Volume 1, Second Series. With this shift, we see the departure of the hunting and military portrait plates, of the first 5 years of the periodical, and the arrival of scenic and romantic travel plates, more consistent continuation of the needlework patterns and the new pictorial cards.
The fashion plates offer more variety in dress styles, including the first ones specifically designed for brides. Sadly, for the next 5 years (1814 - 1818) there were no more children or men's fashion styles offered. There is a marked increase in the mourning dresses for every occasion, triggered by the death in childbirth, of the popular Princess Charlotte of Wales.

By the end of 1818 The Repository of Art is the most fashionable place for the upper classes of London to visit. The magazine is eagerly anticipated by society women and has huge influence on the fashion of the day. Regardless of its shifted focus towards subjects more appreciated by the ladies of the time Ackermann continues to depict 19th century England with vibrant detail.

Описание: Figuring explores the complexities of love and the human search for truth and meaning through the interconnected lives of several historical figures across four centuries--beginning with the astronomer Johannes Kepler, who discovered the laws of planetary motion, and ending with the marine biologist and author Rachel Carson, who catalyzed the environmental movement.

Stretching between these figures is a cast of artists, writers, and scientists--mostly women, mostly queer--whose public contribution have risen out of their unclassifiable and often heartbreaking private relationships to change the way we understand, experience, and appreciate the universe. Among them are the astronomer Maria Mitchell, who paved the way for women in science; the sculptor Harriet Hosmer, who did the same in art; the journalist and literary critic Margaret Fuller, who sparked the feminist movement; and the poet Emily Dickinson.

Emanating from these lives are larger questions about the measure of a good life and what it means to leave a lasting mark of betterment on an imperfect world: Are achievement and acclaim enough for happiness? Is genius? Is love? Weaving through the narrative is a set of peripheral figures--Ralph Waldo Emerson, Charles Darwin, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Herman Melville, Frederick Douglass, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Walt Whitman--and a tapestry of themes spanning music, feminism, the history of science, the rise and decline of religion, and how the intersection of astronomy, poetry, and Transcendentalist philosophy fomented the environmental movement.

Описание: From the creator of Brain Pickings, here is a kaleidoscopic and original illumination of the lives and ideas of half a dozen women artists, writers, and scientists, whose paths would influence the lives of those who followed.

Genius is local, governed by the protective spirit of a place, embedded, nurtured by circumstances and moments that are random, uncalculated, errant, and only later observed as fateful. Maria Popova gives us the lives of five American women--the astronomer Maria Mitchell, the feminist Margaret Fuller, the sculptor Harriet Hosmer, the poet Emily Dickinson, and the marine biologist Rachel Carson--who come to be possessed by genius and find original directions to pursue. Figuring traces the hesitant, uncertain arcs of their influences, intersections, and self-encounters as they coalesce into something previously unimagined, their aspirations unfolding in the completeness of being.

Описание:

Sometimes a snail isn't just a snail, but a mirror, a mystery, and something truly magnificent.

Long ago, before half the stars that speckle the sky were born and the mountains rose up reaching for them, a giant ocean covered the Earth. One day, in that giant ocean, something strange happened: a change so mysterious and magnificent that it was given a special name: mutation. From this mutation, life was born from non-life--the first living creatures, tinier than a grain of sand, tinier than the tip of the eyelash of a mouse, came into being. Time tended to them kindly. Soon--which in cosmic time means millions and millions of years--they crawled out of the ocean and onto the land. Not knowing whether they would find a home there, some of these brave early explorers carried their homes on their backs. And so snails took to the Earth. And then, one autumn afternoon a cosmic blink ago, a human--a retired scientist from the London's Natural History Museum--stopped mid-stride on his walk when he noticed a most unusual garden snail in a pile of compost. And so Jeremy and his story become a human story as well.

Maria Popova has been writing about what she reads on the blog Brain Pickings since 2006, which is now included in the Library of Congress archive of culturally valuable materials.
