Описание: Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen transmitted to humans through ingested food. This bacterium is responsible for human listeriosis, an extremely serious infection with a high mortality rate. In Listeriosis Outbreaks: Symptoms, Risk Factors and Treatment, the authors study the symptoms, risk factors and treatment of human listeriosis. L. monocytogenes is more deadly than other common food-borne pathogens such as the Campylobacter species, Salmonella enteritidis and Vibrio species. The authors have focused on listeriosis and the virulence factors of this pathogen for several years, performing a clinical study in collaboration with health institutions from two regions in northern Spain, Cantabria and Gipuzkoa. Consequently, biomarkers of listeriosis have been identified that may be used to study the disease evolution and trace the susceptibility to infection of specific high-risk groups. Following this, emphasis is placed on the symptoms of listeriosis in game birds in order to provide a description of various forms of the disease. Specific subjects are discussed in depth, such as the etiology of the disease, epidemiology, economic significance, hosts, transmission, incubation period, clinical signs, lesions, diagnostic procedures, principle of disease prevention, treatment and significance in public health. This compilation also reviews literature which may help readers assess large-scale aspects of this antimicrobial treatment for limiting the microbial contamination of food and improving the safety of the food supply, minimizing the risk of foodborne infections. In closing, the listeriosis outbreaks linked to the consumption of ready-to-eat fresh fruits and vegetables are presented, along with the physical and transcriptional organization of stress-associated response mechanisms.

Описание: To mitigate the spread of the rare and deadly disease Ebola, Ebola Virus Disease (EVD): Outbreaks, Control and Prevention Strategies begins with the proposition of a mathematical model with vital dynamics and two preventive measures: quarantine and isolation. Humanitarian issues in Ebola prevention and control are explored, as well as the cultural practices and social norms during outbreaks. Additionally, some innovative approaches in the humanitarian response to prevention and control are discussed. The authors expose the dilemma Ebola poses to within the healthcare system, where healthcare providers are caught between the over-arching quest for self-preservation from a highly virulent disease and the professional demand of prioritising the interests of the patients over self. In conclusion, the authors describe successfully developed drug candidates from their laboratory for the treatment Ebola using EBOV protein structure, such as VP24, VP35, VP40, nucleoprotein, and glycoprotein.
Noroviruses are responsible for approximately 90% of epidemics worldwide; in particular, non-bacterial outbreaks of gastroenteritis in humans around the world, causing approximately 200,000 deaths annually in developing countries. In addition, after the introduction of rotavirus vaccination programs, the norovirus is the most common cause of paediatric gastroenteritis, requiring medical care in the high- and middle-income countries. All of this information is indicative of norovirus prevalence worldwide, and of the necessity of efforts to develop effective tools for their control and prevention. The prevalence of noroviruses worldwide is alarming, and this information is indicative of the necessity for effective tools to aid in their control and prevention. This book presents a compilation of recent research on these aspects, providing essential and specific information to help further understand the prevalence and distribution of norovirus genotypes and strains, the potential emergence of new strains of this pathogen, as well as strategies for their prevention and treatment.

Описание: This book provides a systematic treatment of the mathematical underpinnings of work in the theory of outbreak dynamics and their control, covering balanced perspectives between theory and practice including new material on contemporary topics in the field of infectious disease modelling. Specifically, it presents a unified mathematical framework linked to the distribution theory of non-negative random variables; the many examples used in the text, are introduced and discussed in light of theoretical perspectives. The book is organized into 9 chapters: The first motivates the presentation of the material on subsequent chapters; Chapter 2-3 provides a review of basic concepts of probability and statistical models for the distributions of continuous lifetime data and the distributions of random counts and counting processes, which are linked to phenomenological models. Chapters 4 focuses on dynamic behaviors of a disease outbreak during the initial phase while Chapters 5-6 broadly cover compartment models to investigate the consequences of epidemics as the outbreak moves beyond the initial phase. Chapter 7 provides a transition between mostly theoretical topics in earlier chapters and Chapters 8 and 9 where the focus is on the data generating processes and statistical issues of fitting models to data as well as specific mathematical epidemic modeling applications, respectively. This book is aimed at a wide audience ranging from graduate students to established scientists from quantitatively-oriented fields of epidemiology, mathematics and statistics. The numerous examples and illustrations make understanding of the mathematics of disease transmission and control accessible. Furthermore, the examples and exercises, make the book suitable for motivated students in applied mathematics, either through a lecture course, or through self-study. This text could be used in graduate schools or special summer schools covering research problems in mathematical biology.

Описание: "Portrays epidemiologists as disease detectives who tirelessly hunt for clues and excel at deductive reasoning. Even Sherlock Holmes would be proud of this astute group of professionals."--Booklist Despite advances in health care, infectious microbes continue to be a formidable adversary to scientists and doctors. Vaccines and antibiotics, the mainstays of modern medicine, have not been able to conquer infectious microbes because of their amazing ability to adapt, evolve, and spread to new places. Terrorism aside, one of the greatest dangers from infectious disease we face today is from a massive outbreak of drug-resistant microbes. Deadly Outbreaks recounts the scientific adventures of a special group of intrepid individuals who investigate these outbreaks around the world and figure out how to stop them. Part homicide detective, part physician, these medical investigators must view the problem from every angle, exhausting every possible source of contamination. Any data gathered in the field must be stripped of human sorrows and carefully analyzed into hard statistics. Author Alexandra Levitt, PhD, is an expert on emerging diseases and other public health threats. Here she shares insider accounts she's collected that go behind the alarming headlines we've seen in the media: mysterious food poisonings, unexplained deaths at a children's hospital, a strange neurologic disease afflicting slaughterhouse workers, flocks of birds dropping dead out of the sky, and drug-resistant malaria running rampant in a refugee camp. Meet the resourceful investigators--doctors, veterinarians, and research scientists--and discover the truth behind these cases and more. This edition features a new introduction by the author
