Автор: Andrzej Pienkos Название: The House of Art: Modern Residences of Artists as the Subject and Space of Creation ISBN: 3631669720 ISBN-13(EAN): 9783631669723 Издательство: Peter Lang Рейтинг: Цена: 78710.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: The term «house of art» designates the cultural phenomenon and creative mode in modernity associated with an artist’s residence as his own creation and as his product of a need to create which is unfulfilled in the painter’s, writer’s or composer’s actual field. This book discusses the most important of these creations from the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th, including gardens as well as the artist’s space, broadly understood, annexed by his imagination. An artist’s shaping of his own residence was most commonly a secondary area of his creative work. The formula for a «house of art» is specific to the particular artist and does not have to fit within any given architectural or decorative style. It may conform to the traditions of a residence (artist’s palace, cottage etc), but most often it forms an individual case.
Nineteenth-century newspaper editor Jane Grey Swisshelm (1815-1884) was an unconventionally ambitious woman. While she struggled in private to be a dutiful daughter, wife, and mother, she publicly critiqued and successfully challenged gender conventions that restricted her personal behavior, limited her political and economic opportunities, and attempted to silence her voice. As the owner and editor of newspapers in Pittsburgh; St. Cloud, Minnesota; and Washington, D.C.; and as one of the founders of the Minnesota Republican Party, Swisshelm negotiated a significant place for herself in the male-dominated world of commerce, journalism, and politics. How she accomplished this feat; what expressive devices she used; what social, economic, and political tensions resulted from her efforts; and how those tensions were resolved are the central questions examined in this biography. Sylvia Hoffert arranges the book topically, rather than chronologically, to include Swisshelm in the broader issues of the day, such as women's involvement in politics and religion, their role in the workplace, and marriage. Rescuing this prominent feminist from obscurity, Hoffert shows how Swisshelm laid the groundwork for the ""New Woman"" of the turn of the century.

Описание: Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins (Northern Paiute) has long been recognized as an important nineteenth-century American Indian activist and writer. Yet her acclaimed performances and speaking tours across the United States, along with the copious newspaper articles that grew out of those tours, have been largely ignored and forgotten. The Newspaper Warrior presents new material that enhances public memory as the first volume to collect hundreds of newspaper articles, letters to the editor, advertisements, book reviews, and editorial comments by and about Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins. This anthology gathers together her literary production for newspapers and magazines from her 1864 performances in San Francisco to her untimely death in 1891, focusing on the years 1879 to 1887, when Winnemucca Hopkins gave hundreds of lectures in the eastern and western United States; published her book, Life among the Piutes: Their Wrongs and Claims (1883); and established a bilingual school for Native American children. Editors Cari M. Carpenter and Carolyn Sorisio masterfully assemble these exceptional and long-forgotten articles in a call for a deeper assessment and appreciation of Winnemucca Hopkins's stature as a Native American author, while also raising important questions about the nature of Native American literature and authorship. Cari M. Carpenter is an associate professor of English at West Virginia University. She is the author of Seeing Red: Anger, Sentimentality, and American Indians. Carolyn Sorisio is a professor of English at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. She is the author of Fleshing Out America: Race, Gender, and the Politics of the Body in American Literature, 1833-1879.
Автор: Goggin Maureen Daly, Tobin Beth Fowkes Название: Material Women, 1750 1950: Consuming Desires and Collecting Practices ISBN: 1138253073 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781138253070 Издательство: Taylor&Francis Рейтинг: Цена: 54090.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: With the volume's global perspective and comparative framework, this collection contributes to the ongoing scholarly examination of consumption by taking the topic of women, material culture, and consumption into new arenas. The essays explore the connections between consumption and subjectivity; they build upon and complicate the idea that consumption, as a form of meaning making, is key to the construction of gendered, classed, and national identities. Providing a cross-cultural perspective on consumption, the essays are historically specific case studies. While some essays examine women's consumption in a range of Anglophone and Francophone locations, primarily in Britain, France, Australia, Canada, and the US, other essays on Chinese, Senegalese, Indian, and Mexican women's consumption, particularly as it relates to fashion and design, provide a comparative framework that will recalibrate ongoing discussions about consumption and domesticity, dress and identity, and desire and subjectivity. In addition to its focus on gender and consumption, this volume addresses gender and collecting, exploring the tensions between accumulation and systematic collecting. Also examined is the way in which the display of collected objects”in Impressionists' paintings, in mass-produced illustrations, in the glass cases of museums and department stores”participates in the construction of particular identities as well as serving as a kind of value-producing material practice.

Описание: When women were admitted to the Royal Academy Schools in 1860, female art students gained a foothold in the most conservative art institution in England. Analysing their education and careers, this book argues that the women who attended the art schools during the 1860s and 1870s produced work that accommodated yet subtly challenged the orthodoxies of the fine art establishment.
Автор: Charlotte Streifer Rubinstein Название: Fanny Palmer: The Life and Works of a Currier & Ives Artist ISBN: 0815610955 ISBN-13(EAN): 9780815610953 Издательство: Mare Nostrum (Eurospan) Рейтинг: Цена: 52670.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: As one of Currier & Ives`s leading artists, Frances ("Fanny") Bond Palmer (1812-1876) was a major lithographer whose prints reached a mass audience. In Fanny Palmer: The Life and Works of a Currier & Ives Artist, Rubinstein chronicles the details of Palmer`s life, situating her work as the product of her own merit rather than as an achievement of Currier & Ives.
Women, Art and Money in England establishes the importance of women artists' commercial dealings to their professional identities and reputations in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Grounded in economic, social and art history, the book draws on and synthesises data from a broad range of documentary and archival sources to present a comprehensive history of women artists' professional status and business relationships within the complex and changing art market of late-Victorian England.
By providing new insights into the routines and incomes of women artists, and the spaces where they created, exhibited and sold their art, this book challenges established ideas about what women had to do to be considered 'professional' artists. More important than a Royal Academy education or membership to exhibiting societies was a woman's ability to sell her work. This meant that women had strong incentive to paint in saleable, popular and 'middlebrow' genres, which reinforced prejudices towards women's 'naturally' inferior artistic ability - prejudices that continued far into the twentieth century. From shining a light on the difficult to trace pecuniary arrangements of little researched artists like Ethel Mortlock to offering new and direct comparisons between the incomes earned by male and female artists, and the genres, commissions and exhibitions that earned women the most money, Women, Art and Money is a timely contribution to the history of women's working lives that is relevant to a number of scholarly disciplines.
