Anglo-India's regional literature was both a practical and imaginative response to a pivotal period in the early colonialism of South Asia.
During the later decades of the eighteenth century, a rapid influx of English-speaking Europeans arrived in India with an interest in expanding the creation and distribution of anglophone literature. At the same time, a series of military, political, and economic successes for the British in Asia created the first global crisis to shepherd in an international system of national ideologies. In this study of colonial literary production, James Mulholland proposes that the East India Company was a central actor in the institutionalization of anglophone literary culture in India. The EIC drew its employees from around the British Isles, bringing together people with a wide variety of ethnic and national origins. Its cultural infrastructure expanded from presses and newspapers to poetry collections, letters, paper-making and selling, circulating libraries, and amateur theaters.
Recovering this rich archive of documents and activities, Mulholland shows how regional reading and writing reflected the knotty geopolitical situation and the comingling of Anglo and Indian cultures at a moment when the subcontinent's colonial future was not yet clear. He shows why Anglo-Indian literary publics cohered during this period, reexamining the relationship between writing in English and imperial power in a way that moves beyond the easy correspondence of literature as an instrument of empire. Tracing regional and translocal links among Madras, Calcutta, Bombay, and settlements surrounding the Bay of Bengal, Before the Raj recovers a network of authors, reading publics, and corporate agents to demonstrate that anglophone literature adapted itself to geographical politics and social circumstances, rather than being simply imitative of the works produced in the English metropole.
Mulholland introduces readers to figures like the Calcutta-born Eyles Irwin, the first man to sustain a literary career from India. We also meet James Romney, an army officer who wrote poems and plays, including a stage adaptation of Tristram Shandy. Alongside these men were anonymous female poets, hailed as the harbingers of an anglo-asiatic taste, and captive adolescent Europeans who, caught up in the conflict with southern India's last independent ruler, Tipu Sultan, were forcibly converted to Islam, castrated, and made to cross-dress as dancing boys for Tipu's entertainment. Revealing the vibrant literary culture that existed long before the characters of Rudyard Kipling's best-known works, Before the Raj reveals how these writers operated within a web of colonial cities and trading outposts that borrowed from one another and produced vital interlinked aesthetics.

Автор: Mulholland Andy And Gwen Название: Cruising the River Moselle/Mosel: An illustrated guide to cruising the River Moselle/Mosel, with details of locks, moorings, facilities and attraction ISBN: 1716318475 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781716318474 Издательство: Неизвестно Рейтинг: Цена: 16710.00 T Наличие на складе: Нет в наличии. Описание: This guide is published by the European Inland Waterways Section of the Cruising Association (CA). The River Moselle, which runs for 394kms from Neuves-Maison in France through Luxembourg and Germany (where it is known as the Mosel) to finally join the Rhine at Koblenz, has hitherto been poorly served with cruising guides to what is widely regarded as one of Europe's most beautiful waterways. This guide is now the first to provide comprehensive information on this cruising route in English. Aimed at motor yachts with a draught of 2.5m or below and capable of reducing air draft to a maximum of 4.4m, the guide includes step-by-step navigation details for the river, including distances; bridge heights; lock dimensions and VHF channels; descriptions of moorings and facilities, and information on the sights, culture and visitor attractions along the route. It is written by CA members Andy and Gwen Mulholland, who have cruised extensively over the past decade in France, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, and edited by Gordon Knight. Updated regularly via reports from CA members actively cruising the waterways, several hundred of which are submitted each year, it also includes a 25 per cent discount offer on first year's CA membership to purchasers applying online during the year. Members then have access to additional hyperlinks to the CA's proprietary CAptain's Mate app, enabling them to read the most up to date information on mooring locations and navigation restrictions as they are posted.

A breathtaking panoramic portrayal of the iconic California roadway, in a horizontal format that enhances the drama of the landscape
American photographer Karen Halverson (born 1949) first fell in love with Mulholland Drive while on the very opposite coast from the iconic California roadway--during a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. There, Halverson encountered David Hockney's 20-foot painting Mullholland Drive: The Road to the Studio. A few years later, she moved to Los Angeles and found herself frequently driving along the 52-mile street that Hockney depicted as a colorful path to a fantastical world. Soon Halverson developed her own dynamic relationship with Mulholland Drive, likening the route along the crest of the Santa Monica Mountains to "watching a movie full of jump cuts" with its ever-changing scenery.
Halverson's panoramic photographs capture the allure of the street that stretches from the Pacific Ocean to Hollywood, a unique juncture between the area's natural landscape and the manmade infrastructure that has come to define Los Angeles. The images speak to the grandness of the environment and its Hollywood legacy, presented horizontally so as to emphasize their sweeping breadth. With a soft, sun-dried quality that is quintessentially Californian, Halverson's photographs capture the magic that pulses through the City of Angels.
