An elegantly packaged new edition of a classic Chinese folk tale collection that responds to the contemporary fascination with the ancient culture of the Far East.
This elegantly presented edition of Richard Wilhelm & Frederick H. Martens' classic collection of 73 Chinese fairy tales has been re-edited by a leading Chinese historian to heighten its appeal to the modern Western reader. As China continues to develop as an economic and political superpower, there has been a growing interest in its history and literature. China has a rich oral tradition and these stories, passed down through hundreds of years, not only enthrall and delight, but also cast light on the country's ancient culture.
Chinese folklore is as colourful and captivating as the Arabian Nights or the work of the Brothers Grimm or Hans Christian Andersen, yet the stories themselves remain largely undiscovered in the West. Written with economy and wit, the short, one- or two-page tales exhibit those distinct aspects of the Chinese character and approach to life which derive from the values of Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism. These include moderation, the value of promises, respect for one's elders, justice and injustice, and the power of wisdom.
The stories are arranged thematically under headings such as nursery fairy tales, nature and animal tales, and myths. Some, such as the legend of the ghostly general and haunted battlefield, engage with the supernatural, while others are dramatic tales featuring flying ogres and cunning demons. Yet others introduce magical talking animals, dragons, endangered princesses, clever shepherd boys and divine figures, including the shape-shifting Yang Oerlang, Guan Yu, the god of war, and the Silkworm Goddess who has a horse's head.
Intriguing titles such as Why Dog and Cat Are Enemies, The Dragon Princess, The Maiden Who Was Stolen Away and The Bird with Nine Heads sit next to tales familiar to all Chinese children, including The Lady of the Moon and The Herd Boy and the Weaving Maiden.

Описание: Compact, affordable introductions to some of the world's most popular artists, looking at their works in incredible close-up detail
This fascinating book views the work of Flemish painter Jan van Eyck (c. 1395-1441) under a magnifying glass. Van Eyck studied fauna and flora in their natural environment and under carefully chosen light conditions, and then achieved a breathtaking and convincing realism in his paintings. Each work is a collection of minuscule details rendered with superb clarity--or at least that is the viewer's first impression. As this book reveals, Van Eyck's exceptional talent was his understanding of how the human brain supplements visual perception. Here, full reproductions of his work as well as close-up details

When Les and Chris Humphreys moved to Ardnamurchan 15 years ago, little did they realise they would be sharing their home with some of Britain's most elusive and misunderstood mustelids. Amongst all the animals and birds that visit their garden, they have formed a special bond with numerous pine martens, and have studied them and a cast of other creatures at close range through direct observation and via sensor-operated cameras.
Naturalist and photographer Polly Pullar has known the Humphreys and their pine martens for many years. In this book she tells the remarkable story of the couple and their animal friends, interpolating it with natural history, anecdote and her own experiences of the wildlife of the area. The result is a fascinating glimpse into the life of a much misunderstood animal and a passionate portrait of one of Scotland's richest habitats - the oakwoods of Scotland's Atlantic seaboard.

This volume performs a critical and vibrant reconstruction of Anabaptist identity and theological method, in the wake of the recent revelations of the depth of the sexual abuse perpetrated by the most influential Anabaptist theologian of the 20th century, John Howard Yoder. In an attempt to liberate Anabaptist theology and identity from the constricting vision appropriated and reformulated by Yoder, these essays refuse the determinative categories of the last half century supplied by and carried beyond Harold Bender's The Anabaptist Vision.
While still under the shadow of decades of trauma, a recontexualized conversation about Anabaptist theology and identity emerges in this volume that is ecumenically engaged, philosophically astute, psychologically attuned, and resolutely vulnerable. The volume offers a Trinitarian and Christological framework that holds together the importance of Scripture, tradition, and the lived experience of the Christian community, as the contributors examine a wide variety of issues such as Mennonite feminism, Anabaptist queer theology, and Mennonite theological methods. These essays interrogate the operations of power, violence, exclusion, and privilege in methodology in this changed context, offering self-critical constructive alternatives for articulating Anabaptist theology and identity.

To understand many of our everyday joint actions we need a theory of skillful joint action.
In everyday contexts we do numerous things together. Philosophers of collective intentionality have wondered how we can distinguish parallel cases from cases where we act together. Often their theories argue in favor of one characteristic, feature, or function, that differentiates the two. This feature then distinguishes parallel actions from joint action. The approach in this book is different.
Three claims are developed: (1) There are several functions that help human agents coordinate and act together. (2) This entails that joint action should be understood through these different, interrelated, types of coordination. (3) A multidimensional conceptual space, with three levels of control and coordination, will allow us to connect these different forms of coordination and their interdependencies. This allows us to understand the jointness of an action in a more differentiated and encompassing way.
This approach has ramifications for several distinctions that are typically understood to be binary, including those between action and mere bodily movement, joint action and parallel action, and action together and not together.

Описание: Essays on the provocative 2008 film by Renzo Martens, Episode III (Enjoy Poverty).
Investigating the economic value of one of the Democratic Republic of the Congo's most lucrative exports (namely, poverty), Renzo Martens' provocative film Episode III: Enjoy Poverty (2008) remains a landmark intervention into debates about contemporary art's relationship to exploitative economies. Throughout Critique in Practice, contributors explore the work's legacy and how it relates to the politics of representation, uses of the documentary form, art criticism, the deployment of humanitarian aid, the impact of extractive forms of globalized capital, and the neoliberal politics of decolonization. The unconventional representation of acute immiseration throughout Enjoy Poverty generated far-from-resolved disputes about how deprivation is portrayed within Western mainstream media and throughout global cultural institutions. Using a range of approaches, this volume reconsiders that portrayal and how the film's reception led Martens to found a long-term program, Human Activities.

Описание: Dr. Milne J. Ongley, M.D., has practiced medicine on many continents and has cured several hundred thousands of patients in his sixty-five years of practice. He invented his own solution that is injected directly into the joints, and his orthopedic reputation is like many before their time. The greats like Tesla, Freud, Rembrandt, and Einstein also suffered being different and misunderstood-they were a threat to the established point of view at the time.I first met Dr. Ongley at his office in Newport Beach, California, with its signed pictures on the walls of every famous athlete and Olympic champion at the time. There was an energy in the waiting room that felt soothing and loving. But the people sitting there were in pain-many in very serious pain. I noticed that, after their treatment and spending time with Dr. Ongley, every patient had a smile on his or her face when coming back through the waiting room to leave. I had never seen such a transformation. But Dr. Ongley isn't always esteemed by his colleagues. He was-and is-a threat to the medical community, which does not want cures. There's no money in cures. And thus, Dr. Ongley became a target. Dr. Ongley may push his positive thoughts too far, but the facts are brilliant. In the early 1980s, I had four lower discs bone on bone and had problems turning over in bed and was in constant pain. I was referred to him by a friend and had one set of injections. He told me to do these very simple exercises which took no more than ten minutes, and by the third month I was already feeling great. I had an x-ray six months after treatment and the discs had grown back to their normal selves-my problem was solved. Over the years of falling and breaking parts of my skeleton, he was my doctor and became a very close and dear friend. Without him I would be in a wheelchair by now because opting for invasive surgery would never be my first choice.I have spent much time with him over the last thirty-three years and know he is very loving but stands only in truth and integrity and what is best for the patient. He is both gentle and firm. I learned the magic of the body and how unaware we each are related to pain, be it the real cause, the location, and the message it holds for the patient. All of this led to us sitting down having a rather long chat, which led to the information in this book.I know this will be a refreshing wake-up call for many to take responsibility for their own health without putting the medical community on a pedestal. Thoughts, emotions, and pain are the topics of focus in this book. Our multiple prescriptions give us a false sense of safety, but I consider those prescriptions a trap set by the medical community. We live in our self-created prison...but the door is not locked. Let's walk free to live our life.
