Описание: Anna Leonowens, a proper Englishwoman, was an unlikely candidate to change the course of Siamese (Thai) history. A young widow and mother, her services were engaged in the 1860's by King Mongkut of Siam to help him communicate with foreign governments and be the tutor to his children and favored concubines. Stepping off the steamer from London, Anna found herself in an exotic land she could have only dreamed of lush landscape of mystic faiths and curious people, and king's palace bustling with royal pageantry, ancient custom, and harems. One of her pupils, the young prince Chulalongkorn, was particularly influenced by Leonowens and her Western ideals. He learned about Abraham Lincoln and the tenets of democracy from her, and years later he would become Siam's most progressive king. He guided the country's transformation from a feudal state to a modern society, abolishing slavery and making many other radical reforms. Weaving meticulously researched facts with beautifully imagined scenes, Margret Landon recreates an unforgettable portrait of life in a forgotten extotic land. Written more than fifty years ago, and translated into dozens of languages, Anna and the King of Siam (the inspiration for the magical play and film The King and I)continues to delight and enchant readers around the world.

"The unforgettable tale of a man, a woman, and a nation divided. Written by Raffi, one of Armenia's most popular writers and translated by Mrs. Jane S. Wingate".
Although not a novel of the Armenian Genocide of 1915-23 per se, Raffi's masterpiece is as important to understanding the historical context of the Armenians in the Ottoman Empire in the late 19th century as any history textbook. It can be argued that if Raffi's messages of Armenian self-sufficiency had been more widely heeded, the tragedies of the 1890s and 1915 might have turned out differently. It was originally published in 1881 and deals with the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78 long before the large-scale massacres began. Raffi called for action, unity, and self-reliance. Many of his criticisms of the Armenian community of the time are equally as applicable today as they were nearly 125 years ago. He foresaw what was in store for the Armenians if they did not actively seek to change their fate. The Fool is the only one of Raffi's novels that has ever been readily available in English. This translation by Jane S. Wingate gives modern-day readers access to this important book.

Where are sustainable possibilities of peace with justice to be found in Israel-Palestine, tragically divided as it is between two peoples and three faiths? In the face of continuous, entrenched cycles of conflict can one maintain both a sense of perspective and a stance of realistic hopefulness? This book addresses the key issues embraced by those profound questions in thoughtful, practical ways.
Gathering together dispatches and commentary over a period of nearly twenty years from international lawyer, independent diplomat and engaged ecumenist Dr Harry Hagopian, Keeping Faith With Hope blends experience and insight in often-unexpected ways.
By interweaving the political, the personal and the spiritual, the author opens up new paths for understanding what is going on in Israel-Palestine and how we might engage more fruitfully with the region in the future. Here is both a testament to hope and a living exemplification of it.

The author of KHATCHAGOGH HISHATAKARAN (DAIRY OF A CON ARTIST) whose real name was Hagop Melik-Hagopian, is well known by his pseudonym, Raffi. He was an Armenian from that part of Armenia which was under the Mohammedan rule of the Shah of Persia. In the Dairy of a con artist he proposes the civic duties and responsibilities of individuals. He vividly depicts the dark side of the human being but proposes the nurture as opposed to the nature theory. He suggests the society as responsible for creating fertile grounds for individuals' actions. Hence, he proposes the responsibility of the society to its individual in parallel with civic duties of the individuals to the society.

The story begins in Nigeria where the character of Dele plays a last game of football with his friends and says goodbye to his son Chidi, telling him he will send for him. He then embarks on a voyage where he meets strangers along the way carrying their own stories of upheaval, struggle and hope - sharing his dream to make their home in a new city and be joined by their families. Dele's journey melds with the present day. In an inner-city hostel, Dele is an old man being looked after by Tian Mey, his carer. He reflects the past and his journey to where he is now and his story intertwines with the other migrants, both in his memories of the journey and the present-day reality of the hostel.
Based on the illustrated novel by Oscar winner Shaun Tan, one man's tale echoes the many 'arrivals' happening around us all the time. This epic migration story unfolds through an extraordinary weaving together of theatre, circus and music. The Arrival tells the age-old story of immigration that is universal across peoples of diverse histories, countries and cultures.
