Questions the way we understand the idea of community through an investigation of the term "historically black" In Historically Black, Mieka Brand Polanco examines the concept of community in the United States: how communities are experienced and understood, the complex relationship between human beings and their social and physical landscapes—and how the term “community” is sometimes conjured to feign a cohesiveness that may not actually exist. Drawing on ethnographic and historical materials from Union, Virginia, Historically Black offers a nuanced and sensitive portrait of a federally recognized Historic District under the category “Ethnic Heritage—Black.” Since Union has been home to a racially mixed population since at least the late 19th century, calling it “historically black” poses some curious existential questions to the black residents who currently live there. Union’s identity as a “historically black community” encourages a perception of the town as a monochromatic and monohistoric landscape, effectively erasing both old-timer white residents and newcomer black residents while allowing newer white residents to take on a proud role as preservers of history. Gestures to “community” gloss an oversimplified perspective of race, history and space that conceals much of the richness (and contention) of lived reality in Union, as well as in the larger United States. They allow Americans to avoid important conversations about the complex and unfolding nature by which groups of people and social/physical landscapes are conceptualized as a single unified whole. This multi-layered, multi-textured ethnography explores a key concept, inviting public conversation about the dynamic ways in which race, space, and history inform our experiences and understanding of community.

Описание: Finding Hope is the story of a young woman, Kate Connor, who survives a tragedy that resulted in an immense loss. These events force her to question her existence and threaten her ability to move ahead. In a desperate attempt to run from the pain, Kate flees the only home she has ever known for a remote locale in Asia. It is in the lush surroundings and warm waters of a beach in Okinawa that she slowly restores her body and a fragment of her spirit. Despite the distance Kate has created from her painful past, a surprising exchange begins with the man who was the cause of her anguish through letters, forcing her to question her capacity for forgiveness. Will Kate have the strength of character to forgive and allow her life to open up to new possibilities and love or will she forever be trapped in a void of guilt and fear? Finding Hope challenges the reader to question if they too can find forgiveness under similar circumstances.

A lovely tabby cat named Mary uses her intelligence and instinct--her big cat brain--to sort out what her human parents want her to do, and how to avoid being "naughty." The story sets up an emotional transition moving from Mary's anxiety about her own naughty behavior, to the realization that she is greatly loved despite her occasional transgressions.
This book was inspired by the author's cat, Xena, who greatly enriched the lives of her "parents" for fourteen of her eighteen years. She was much loved even though she too was occasionally naughty. From infancy, children will love hearing about Mary and her message of unconditional love, and later, will want to read the story themselves for enjoyment and as a learning tool. There is no better predictor of success in life than literacy and the desire to learn through reading.

Описание: This study makes Romania’s largely unknown Joycean heritage visible to an international readership. Reviewing Joyce’s critical reception and translations, as well as the writer’s influence on Romanian prose, it brings Derrida’s notion of «hostipitality» to comparative literary and translation studies in order to theorize the impact of politics and ideology on fiction. After an original survey of the links between Romanian modernism/postmodernism and Western literature, it focuses on alternate trends of hostility and hospitality towards Joyce, especially his techniques and style. It examines how translations dealt with themes prone to communist censorship (politics, sexuality, religion, food), before discussing Joyce’s impact on Romanian writers such as Eliade, Biberi, B?l?i?? and O?oiu.
