Writing shortly after the turn of the 20th century, Bryden provides an insightful examination of hare hunting, noting how it had originally been in vogue during the 18th century. After a period where fox hunting took precedence, use of hounds to hunt hares experienced a resurgence in popularity, with the landed gentry up and down England and also in Ireland returning to the practice.
Many practical elements of training dogs are mentioned: the breeds suitable, the food which promotes their vigor and stamina, the maintenance of their kennels, and the orientation of the hounds with the terrain.
