Even though Duplin county was created in 1749, the marriages from 1749-1754 are missing. The marriage bonds for this book cover the time frame 1755-1868. These bonds were required by the clerk of courts in which the bride-to-be resided in. These bonds were issued before issuing a license to the prospective bridegroom and his bondsman, usually a close friend or relative.

In the minutes, one will find local office holders being appointed and/or qualified, including clerks of courts, registers of deeds, sheriffs, coroners, etc. The court controlled the levying and expenditure of local taxes, matters dealing with public buildings, roads, bridges, etc. were handled by this court and it also selected and summoned juries. Among the other responsibilities of the court found in its minutes were licenses granted to operaters of taverns, as well as deeds and bills of sale being acknowledged by the grantors. the court oversaw a wide range of matters involving estates, including probate of wills, settlements of estates, and appraisements as well as matters dealing with bastardy, and many other valuable bits of information.

These two Western North Carolina counties are important migration paths for early settlers moving into Tennessee, Georgia, and South Carolina. Haywood County was formed in 1808 from Buncombe, while Jackson was formed in 1853 from the middle portions of both Haywood and Macon counties. At one time Jackson County reached from Tennessee boarder south to the South Carolina.
Tryon County was formed from Mecklenburg County in 1769.
