Описание: Home of the Gentry (Russian: Дворянское гнездо Dvory nskoye gnezd pronounced dvɐˈrʲanskʲɪɪ ɡnʲɪˈzdo]), also translated as A Nest of the Gentlefolk and A Nest of the Gentry, is a novel by Ivan Turgenev published in the January 1859 issue of Sovremennik. It was enthusiastically received by the Russian society and remained his least controversial and most widely read novel until the end of the 19th century. It was turned into a movie by Andrey Konchalovsky in 1969. The novel's protagonist is Fyodor Ivanych Lavretsky, a nobleman who shares many traits with Turgenev. The child of a distant, Anglophile father and a serf mother who dies when he is very young, Lavretsky is brought up at his family's country estate home by a severe maiden aunt, often thought to be based on Turgenev's own mother, who was known for her cruelty. Lavretsky pursues an education in Moscow, and while he is studying there, he spies a beautiful young woman at the opera. Her name is Varvara Pavlovna, and he falls in love with her and asks for her hand in marriage. Following their wedding, the two move to Paris, where Varvara Pavlovna becomes a very popular salon hostess and begins an affair with one of her frequent visitors. Lavretsky learns of the affair only when he discovers a note written to her by her lover. Shocked by her betrayal, he severs all contact with her and returns to his family estate.

Описание: Set in Baden-Baden, Smoke is Ivan Turgenev's most cosmopolitan novels. It is an exquisite study of politics and society and an enduringly poignant love story. Smoke, with its European setting, barbed wit, and visionary call for Russia to look west, became the center of a famous philosophical breach between Turgenev and Dostoevsky. On his way back to Russia after some years spent in the West, Grigory Mikhailovich Litvinov, the son of a retired official of merchant stock, stops over in Baden-Baden to meet his fianc e Tatyana. However, a chance encounter with his old flame, the manipulative Irina-now married to a general and a prominent figure in aristocratic expatriate circles-unearths feelings buried deep inside the young man's heart, derailing his plans for the future and throwing his life into turmoil. Around this love story Turgenev constructs a sharply satirical expos of his countrymen, which famously embroiled its author in a heated quarrel with Dostoevsky. A melancholy evocation of impossible romance, Smoke represents the apogee of Turgenev's later fiction.

Описание: Excerpt from The Works of Iv n Turg nieff: First Love, and Other Stories; The Jew

Then what are we to do? -began the host. There was nothing very startling about my first love either; I never fell in love with any one before Anna Ivanovna, now my wife; and every thing ran as though on oil with us; our fathers made up the match, we very promptly fell in love with each other, and entered the bonds of matri mony without delay. My story can be told in two words. I must confess, gentlemen, that in rais ing the question of first love, I set my hopes on you, I will not say old, but yet no longer young bachelors. Will not you divert us with some thing, Vladimir Petrovitch?

My first love belongs, as a matter of fact, not altogether to the ordinary category, - replied, with a slight hesitation, Vladimir Petrovitch, a man of forty, whose black hair was sprinkled with grey.

And again both relapsed into silence, and, as before, only wreaths of smoke escaped from their speechless lips, and rose, in f aint undulations, above their f rousy heads.
