Описание:

The first volume of the works of a literary master of strange fiction

Sir Hugh Walpole was one of the most popular and prolific British authors of the first half of the 20th century. After the publication of his first novel, The Wooden Horse, in 1909 he produced one significant work each year including the acclaimed Herries series. Born in New Zealand in 1884, the son of an Anglican clergyman, Walpole was committed to becoming a writer and encouraged in his ambition by Henry James and Arnold Bennett. A. C. Benson was also a mentor and early influence upon his writing. Despite his acknowledged talent as a storyteller, Walpoles work has been largely ignored since his death in 1941, in part because he was savagely lampooned by Somerset Maughams fictional characterisation of him in Cakes & Ale. Walpole, in keeping with many of his contemporaries, wrote in several genres of fiction and among his thirty-six novels, five volumes of short stories and two plays are historical, juvenile and even detective stories. His associations with A. C. Benson, Henry James, H. G. Wells and the fact that Horace Walpole (author of the first gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto) and Richard Harris Barham (author of the Ingoldsby Legends) were both among his ancestors surely stimulated his taste for gothic and macabre fiction. In fact, during the 1930s Walpole edited two well received anthologies of creepy stories in which some of his own material appeared. His own literary excursions into the world of the ghostly and bizarre, which remain highly regarded by aficionados of supernatural fiction, include several novels and a substantial number of short stories all of which are included in this three volume Leonaur collected edition.

Included in this first volume are the novel The Old Ladies and fifteen short stories of the strange and unusual including The White Cat, Lizzie Rand, Mrs. Porter and Miss Allen, The Tiger and The Twisted Inn.

Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Описание: The figure of Mrs. Trenchard is the monumental figure of this novel. In her, an inexpressive and apparently commonplace woman, is concentrated all the jealous tenacity of a strong parent who is unwilling to let go her child. Her strength lies mainly in her ability, as the unsympathetic see it, to impose terms on the creative possibilities of those she loves, and she singles out the considerate Katherine as the person whose destiny she wills to govern. When Katherine consents to be engaged for a year, she realizes the necessity of paying any reasonable price to hold her mother and the Trenchards, to win them to Phil. But the mother is like most dominant family-centered mothers, she has no ultimate respect for her daughter's will. She knows better than her daughter. And Katherine is forced in the end to break the adjustment that was forged for love through years.

Описание: The book begins: There was a certain window between the kitchen and the pantry that was Hamlet's favorite. Thirty years ago-these chronicles are of the year 1894-the basements of houses in provincial English towns, even of large houses owned by rich people, were dark, chill, odorful caverns hissing with ill-burning gas and smelling of ill-cooked cabbage. The basement of the Coles' house in Polchester was as bad as any other, but this little window between the kitchen and the pantry was higher in the wall than the other basement windows, almost on a level with the iron railings beyond it, and offering a view down over Orange Street and, obliquely, sharp to the right and past the Polchester High School, a glimpse of the Cathedral towers themselves.

Описание: This notice concerns the writer's first trip to the United States following the the close of the First World War and the printing of his novel, "The Secret City"; which reflects much of what the writer saw in the Russian Revolution during his service with the British Government: "In 'The Secret City', as in ' The Dark Forrest, ' the author handles very special material at first hand. Mr. Walpole served in the Russian Army during the first year of the war...He was in Russia all through the Revolution. 'The Secret City' is real Russia (even Russians admit this), somber, tragic, idealistic, half-maddened by the virus of revolt, yet imposing upon one a quality at once presaging and splendid.Sir Hugh Seymour Walpole, CBE was an English novelist. He was the son of an Anglican clergyman, intended for a career in the church but drawn instead to writing. Among those who encouraged him were the authors Henry James and Arnold Bennett

Описание: As boys, Jimmie Tunstall was John Talbot's implacable foe, never ceasing to taunt, torment, and bully him. Years later, John is married and living in a small coastal town when he learns, much to his chagrin, that his old adversary has just moved to the same town. Before long the harassment begins anew until finally, driven to desperation, John murders his tormentor. Soon he starts to suffer from frightening hallucinations and his personality and physical appearance begin to alter, causing him increasingly to resemble the man he killed. Is it merely the psychological effect of his guilt, or is it the manifestation of something supernatural - and evil? The tension builds until the chilling final scene, when the horrifying truth will be revealed about the killer - and the slain.
