Описание: The runaway French bestseller hailed by the "New York Times" as "a survivor's guide to life in the chattering classes." If civilized people are expected to have read all important works of literature, and thousands more books are published every year, what are we supposed to do in those awkward social situations in which we're forced to talk about books we haven't read? In this delightfully witty, provocative book, a huge hit in France that has drawn attention from critics around the world, literature professor and psychoanalyst Pierre Bayard argues that it's actually more important to know a book's role in our collective library than its details. Using examples from such writers as Graham Greene, Oscar Wilde, Montaigne, and Umberto Eco, and even the movie "Groundhog Day," he describes the many varieties of "non-reading" and the horribly sticky social situations that might confront us, and then offers his advice on what to do. Practical, funny, and thought-provoking, "How to Talk About Books You Haven't Read" is in the end a love letter to books, offering a whole new perspective on how we read and absorb them. It's the book that readers everywhere will be talking about--and despite themselves, reading--this holiday season.

Описание: Taylor (1825-78) was an American poet, literary critic, translator, travel author, and diplomat. At 17 he was apprenticed to a printer and was encouraged to write poetry by critic and editor Rufus Wilmot Griswald, resulting in the publication of Ximena, or The Battle of the Sierra Morena, in 1844. With the money earned from his poetry and an advance for travel articles, he visited England, France, Germany and Italy, making largely pedestrian tours for almost two years. He sent accounts of his travels to various journals in the US and in 1846 published a collection of these pieces as Views A-Foot. In 1848 he was sent to California to report on the goldrush for the New York Tribune and returned via Mexico, publishing a second collection of travel articles in 1850. Further travels took him to Egypt, Palestine and the Mediterranean countries, and later to India, China and Japan, and he published several more books covering these journies. On his return to the US in 1853 he undertook a successful lecture tour, after which he went to Sweden which inspired his long narrative poem Lars. In 1862 he was appointed to the US diplomatic service as secretary of legation in St Petersburg, and 1863 saw the publication of his first novel, Hannah Thurston. He later embarked on a horseback tour of Colorado and the northern mountains and a trip to Iceland. In 1878 he was appointed US Minister to Prussia but a few months after arriving in Berlin, Taylor died there in December 1878. His body was returned to the US and Longfellow wrote a memorial poem in his memory.

Описание:

The novel provides the country with an outstanding rendition of the relationship between Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Gay activist Bayard Rustin. It takes the reader on a journey that begins in January 1956, when Rustin arrives in Montgomery, Alabama to instruct Dr. King and his followers on how best to utilize the concept of non-violence, as an effective tool to fight the evils of segregation. It continues as Rustin draws up the organizational structure for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and continues as Rustin organizes and coordinates the most famous march in this country's history, the 1963 March for Jobs and Justice in Washington, D.C. There never would have been Dr. King's, "I have a dream speech," delivered that day from the Lincoln Memorial if not for Rustin's organizational skills. In this novel, the authors point out that Human Rights is a value that all people are guaranteed in this country, if we can only get beyond the petty prejudices that still exist. They also answer the question would Dr. King have considered the Gay Movement a civil rights issue? That answer is a resounding yes. For the history buff and readers who want to spend time reading a novel that educates, entertains and empowers, this novel is a must read.
