Описание: The Abyssinian Campaign of 1867-68 was a remarkable and now largely forgotten military undertaking of the Victorian Era. The expedition demonstrated the power and ‘reach’ of the British Empire, and no other nation at that time could have considered, let alone undertaken, such an operation. The Abyssinian Empire was a difficult country to invade due to its distance from any major port, the harshness of its terrain, and the inhospitable climatic conditions that swung from blistering heat to sub-zero conditions. Faced with no port facilities along the Red Sea Littoral, the British constructed a harbour, landing stations, roads, telegraph lines, and even a railway, in terrain that had been deserted before their arrival. The logistical demands of the campaign were enormous. To maintain an Anglo-Indian army of around 13,000 men, with around 20,000 camp followers, and over 40,000 animals, was a mammoth task that drew upon the skills of the Royal Navy, the considerable British and Indian merchant marine, and the cutting edge of technology. The campaign was remarkable in that there was to be no territorial aggrandisement, no capture of precious resources, or securing of strategic concerns. The Abyssinian Campaign was one that was conducted partly to rescue British and ‘European’ prisoners held by the increasingly mental unstable Emperor Theodore (Tewodros) II, and partly to restore and maintain British prestige. That this campaign was successful owed much not only to British power, resources, and technology, but also the remarkable leadership of Lieutenant General Sir Robert Napier, later Field Marshal and 1st Baron Napier of Magdala. An experienced officer of engineers he had also seen much active service. His skill and ability helped to ensure that a very difficult campaign in extremely hostile geographical and climatic conditions was successful. The campaign is largely forgotten today, but is worth remembering as a remarkable logistical exercised carry out under very difficult conditions. It was by no means a perfect campaign and much went wrong. Given the difficulty of the task at hand this was inevitable. That it was successful owed much to British technological advancement, and the great skill shown by Napier and his staff.

Описание: Many of the British Army’s actions during the Victorian Era are forgotten, misunderstood and misrepresented. Stereotypes of the Victorian officer, soldier and battlefield abound. As the latter half of the twentieth century was one of ‘Imperial Guilt’ it is perhaps unsurprising that many of the ‘heroes’ of the age have been forgotten. This is particularly true of the ‘Generals’. They were lauded in their day but now are unknown. Yet there were many capable individuals exercising high office. This new work provides some examples of the many interesting and talented officers who exercised command during the Victorian Era. It is hoped that such a work will be of interest to both the casual reader and the student of military history. Much of the military history of this age has been unfairly ignored, and there are many powerful and important lessons to be learnt from the careers of the men included in this book. The Generals featured in this book represent different types of General. Field Marshal Sir George White was Commander in Chief in India from 1893 to 1898 and was a rising star of the Army. Yet his reputation suffered from the South African War and his decision to take refuge in Ladysmith and become sieged during the early part of the war. Field Marshal Robert Napier was also Commander-in-Chief India from 1870 to 1876. He was originally an officer of engineers in the East India Company Army. He was considered one of the finest civil engineers in India and developed a reputation as a fine battlefield commander, culminating in his successfully conducting the Abyssinia Campaign of 1867-68. Brigadier General Robert Loyd-Lindsay's success lay in the political arena more than the military. He did much in the name of military reform and worked hard for the medical support of soldiers. General Sir Archibald Allison was very much the fighting soldier in his younger days, but in later life proved a successful Commandant at Sandhurst and Head of the Intelligence Branch at the War Office. Field Marshal William Nicholson had an interesting campaigning career and had the distinction of being the Second Chief of the General Staff of the British Army and was credited with much success in reforming the army. General Sir William Lockhart was yet another Commander-in-Chief in India who had seen considerable active service including commanding the Tirah Expedition of 1897-1898. General Sir Henry Brackenbury saw considerable active service but his greatest contributions were behind the scenes. He was the greatest administrator in the British Army during the Victorian Era. Major-General Sir John Ardagh had served under Brackenbury in the Intelligence Branch and later became its leader. Ardagh was also a first rate administrator and did an excellent job in the Intelligence Branch. Although criticised during the South African War for a perceived failure of military intelligence he was exonerated by the Royal Commission set up after the war. General Sir Arthur Cunynghame was an officer of the old school. He perhaps deserves more credit than he gets and certainly provides for an interesting study. All in all the Generals featured in this book provides us with a very interesting insight into generals of this era and the way in which they exercised command. The authors are a collection of experienced and early career historians.

Описание: Ludwig Wittgenstein s On Certainty explores a myriad of new and important ideas regarding our notions of belief, knowledge, skepticism, and certainty. During the course of his exploration, Wittgenstein makes a fascinating new discovery about certitude, namely, that it is categorically distinct from knowledge. As his investigation advances, he recognizes that certainty must be non-propositional and non-ratiocinated; borne out not in the things we say, but in our actions, our deeds. Many philosophers working outside of epistemology recognized Wittgenstein's insights and determined that his work's abrupt end might serve as an excellent launching point for still further philosophical expeditions. In Exploring Certainty: Wittgenstein and Wide Fields of Thought, Robert Greenleaf Brice surveys some of this rich topography. Wittgenstein's writings serve as a point of departure for Brice's own ideas about certainty. He shows how Wittgenstein's rough and unpolished notion of certitude might be smoothed out and refined in a way to benefit studies of morality, aesthetics, cognitive science, philosophy of mathematics. Brice's work opens new avenues of thought for scholars and students of the Wittgensteinian tradition, while introducing original philosophies concerning issues central to human knowledge and cognition.

In the tumultuous years following the Civil War, violence and lawlessness plagued the state of Texas, often overwhelming the ability of local law enforcement to maintain order. In response, Reconstruction-era governor Edmund J. Davis created a statewide police force that could be mobilized whenever and wherever local authorities were unable or unwilling to control lawlessness. During its three years (1870–1873) of existence, however, the Texas State Police was reviled as an arm of the Radical Republican party and widely condemned for being oppressive, arrogant, staffed with criminals and African Americans, and expensive to maintain, as well as for enforcing the new and unpopular laws that protected the rights of freed slaves.
Drawing extensively on the wealth of previously untouched records in the Texas State Archives, as well as other contemporary sources, Barry A. Crouch and Donaly E. Brice here offer the first major objective assessment of the Texas State Police and its role in maintaining law and order in Reconstruction Texas. Examining the activities of the force throughout its tenure and across the state, the authors find that the Texas State Police actually did much to solve the problem of violence in a largely lawless state. While acknowledging that much of the criticism the agency received was merited, the authors make a convincing case that the state police performed many of the same duties that the Texas Rangers later assumed and fulfilled the same need for a mobile, statewide law enforcement agency.
