Описание: In 1942, the Canadian government forced more than 21,000 Japanese Canadians from their homes in British Columbia. They were told to bring only one suitcase each and officials vowed to protect the rest. Instead, Japanese Canadians were dispossessed, all their belongings either stolen or sold. The definitive statement of a major national research partnership, Landscapes of Injustice reinterprets the internment of Japanese Canadians by focusing on the deliberate and permanent destruction of home through the act of dispossession. All forms of property were taken. Families lost heirlooms and everyday possessions. They lost decades of investment and labour. They lost opportunities, neighbourhoods, and communities; they lost retirements, livelihoods, and educations. When Japanese Canadians were finally released from internment in 1949, they had no homes to return to. Asking why and how these events came to pass and charting Japanese Canadians' diverse responses, this book details the implications and legacies of injustice perpetrated under the cover of national security. In Landscapes of Injustice the diverse descendants of dispossession work together to understand what happened. They find that dispossession is not a chapter that closes or a period that neatly ends. It leaves enduring legacies of benefit and harm, shame and silence, and resilience and activism.

Описание: Stories collected from a dozen women from across the country, Strange Times will open your eyes to a stripper's lives on the other side of the stage. For each thrill, there is shock. For each victory, there is shame. The unmatched adrenaline rush of thrilling a hundred strangers while dancing on stage has only been felt by those brave enough to risk their everything. I've opened my eyes, my mind and my legs. And we are proud. When my knees ache, when my back cracks, when my hips pop and when my lips stretch to reveal a secretive smile, these stories are only a few that exist among the thousands of women who would dare to tell the world what we are. We are women, we are heroes, we are "whores". We are strippers.

A WORKMAN THAT NEEDETH NOT TO BE ASHAMED
These chapters comprise the Freitas Lectures given by the author at Asbury Theological Seminary, Wilmore, Kentucky, during the fall of 1956. Building upon the exhortation of the Apostle Paul to Timothy, his "son" in the Christian ministry-"Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed" (II Timothy 2:15)-the author speaks out of his own experience as a pastor to those who are ministers or who are preparing themselves for the Christian ministry.
It is the author's conviction that in an age when society, in general, with its galaxy of problems and its multiplicity of needs demands skillful leaders and skilled workers, even more does the Christian Society require at its head and at its heart "workmen that need not to be ashamed." An irreverent, self-seeking society has caused the church to answer for enough indictments; let not the church itself add to this list by failing to provide for itself capable and consecrated "workmen." The contemporary age demands the church at its best. If the church is to be at its best, then those who lead and serve it must be "workmen who need not to be ashamed."
The aim of the book is utterly pragmatic. The author endeavors to point out some of the practical methods by which a minister may be "a workman that needeth not to be ashamed." After an opening chapter on "The Distinctiveness of the Minister's Task," the author proceeds to discuss such practical matters as the minister's care of the church, the continuing preparations of the minister, the minister's spiritual leadership of his people, the minister and Healing, and the minister in his relationship to the world. ---

Описание: When the federal government uprooted and interned Japanese Canadians en masse in 1942, Kishizo Kimura saw his life upended along with tens of thousands of others. But his story is also unique: as a member of two controversial committees that oversaw the forced sale of the property of Japanese Canadians in Vancouver during the Second World War, Kimura participated in the dispossession of his own community. In Witness to Loss Kimura`s previously unknown memoir - written in the last years of his life - is translated from Japanese to English and published for the first time. This remarkable document chronicles a history of racism in British Columbia, describes the activities of the committees on which Kimura served, and seeks to defend his actions. Diverse reflections of leading historians, sociologists, and a community activist and educator who lived through this history give context to the memoir, inviting readers to grapple with a rich and contentious past. More complex than just hero or villain, oppressor or victim, Kimura raises important questions about the meaning of resistance and collaboration and the constraints faced by an entire generation. Illuminating the difficult, even impossible, circumstances that confronted the victims of racist state action in the mid-twentieth century, Witness to Loss reminds us that the challenge of understanding is greater than that of judgment.

Water does not lie. Here in the Champlain Basin--a flowing landscape of mountains and rivers, forests and farms, towns and cities--it is the water that whispers difficult truths. From erosion, pollution, and habitat loss, to the toxic algae blooms that close Champlain's beaches every summer, this once vital ecosystem is coming undone. And while there is no shortage of proposed technical and legislative solutions, it is clear that we also need distinct cultural responses to the problem--ways to see, hear, feel, and understand what the water is telling us. That is where this book comes in. Featuring the fine art photography of M.E. Sipe, the curating vision of Trevien Stanger, and over a dozen essays written by thinkers, academics, poets, farmers, and activists who call this region home, Our Basin of Relations presents new ways of thinking and old ways to remember, helping us chart a more honest path forward toward preservation and renewal. With open hearts, wild minds, and attentive bodies, these essayists deepen our insights and advance our sense of the possible for all of the beings, and for all of our relations, that constitute our home: this beautiful place, the Champlain Basin.
