Описание: Yeats, Shakespeare, and Irish Cultural Nationalism examines Yeats's writing on Shakespeare in the context of his work on behalf of the Irish Literary Revival. While Shakespeare's verse drama provides a source of inspiration for Yeats's poetry and plays, Yeats also writes about Shakespeare in essays and articles promoting the ideals of the Revival, and on behalf of Irish literary nationalism. These prose pieces reveal Yeats thinking about Shakespeare's art and times throughout his career, and taken together they offer a new perspective on the contours of Yeats's cultural politics. This book identifies three stages of Yeats's cultural nationalism, each of which appropriates England's national poet in an idiosyncratic manner, while reflecting contemporary trends in Shakespeare reception. Thus Yeats's fin-de-si cle Shakespeare is a symbolist poet and folk-artist whose pre-modern sensibility detaches him from contemporary English culture and aligns him with the inhabitants of Ireland's rural margins. Next, in the opening decade of the twentieth century, following his visit to Stratford to see the Benson history cycle, Yeats's work for the Irish National Theatre adopts an avant-garde, occultist stagecraft to develop an Irish dramatic repertoire capable of unifying its audience in a shared sense of nationhood. Yeats writes frequently about Shakespeare during this period, locating on the Elizabethan stage the kind of transformational emotional affect he sought to recover in the Abbey Theatre. Finally, as Ireland moves towards political independence, Yeats turns again to Shakespeare to register his disappointment with the social and cultural direction of the nascent Irish state. In each case, Yeats's thinking about Shakespeare responds to the remarkable conflation of aesthetic and religious philosophies constituting his cultural nationalism, thus making a unique case of Shakespearean reception. Taken together, Yeats's writings deracinate Shakespeare, and so contribute significantly to the process by which Shakespeare has come to be seen as a global artist, rather than a specifically English possession.

The Great Wheel: A Commentary on the System of W.B. Yeats` a Vision

Описание: The Great Wheel is the wheel of karma;of reincarnation - of death and rebirth. It is the wheel of the law;the wheel of retribution. It is number and it is measure. It consists of wheels upon wheels, and wheels within wheels;and it is symbolized bythe phases of the moon.

"On the afternoon of October 24th, 1917, four days after my marriage, my wife surprised me by attempting automatic writing. What came in disjointed sentences, in almost illegible writing, was so exciting, sometimes so profound, that I ... offered to spend what remained of life explaining and piecing together those scattered sentences." - William Butler Yeats

It is often said in spiritual literature that time and space are an illusion, maya, samsara. But what exactly does this mean? And what implications does it have for how you should live your everyday life? The Great Wheel is an explanation of the System of birth, death, and rebirth which Nobel laureate William Butler Yeats' described in his masterpiece, A Vision.

Starting out with a discussion of how you can connect with your true purpose in this life - the reason why you incarnated on the earth at this time - The Great Wheel describes simple techniques you can use (such as past life regressions, probable reality progressions, and recapitulation of present life memories) to glimpse different facets of your Daimon (your oversoul; the totality of who you are), in order to understand clearly how you got to where you are at right now. To live your true life's purpose rather than drift along helplessly, it is necessary to see how your present life situation is the end result of decisions which you, yourself, made in other lifetimes and realities.

W.B. Yeats' "System" - a symbolic model of consciousness based upon four levels of memory (ancestral voices = Creative Mind; past lives = Mask; probable realities = Body of Fate; and present life = Will) - is explained in detail, with particular reference to how these levels impinge upon and shape your everyday, moment-to-moment experience: your sense of "who" you are.

An in-depth discussion of twenty-eight personality types (depending upon where you were born in the moon's monthly cycle of phases) illuminates your individual true purpose in incarnating in this life, and helps you to understand where you belong and where you are going.

The Great Wheel concludes with a fascinating explanation of what reality is all about: Mind and Memory, Waking and Dreaming, Change, Familiarity, and the Akashic Records.

"This new work in Bob Makransky's excellent and thought provoking 'Introduction to Magic' series ... is a fascinating and illuminating take on the meaning of the Moon. It's truly a Moon book unlike any other and is guaranteed to alter your perception of yourself and the world." - Paul F. Newman, author LUNA: The Astrological Moon

"Bob Makransky ... is directing the reader to access the higher consciousness. He gives many wonderful techniques for it . ... This is not the kind of book you just read and it's finished. It's really a work book. You have to practice the exercises he gives. You have to apply the lunar phases to your own chart and to others. Many statements require thought and reflection. Not beach reading material. Be prepared to be educated and also shocked " - Joseph Polansky, Diamond Fire magazine

"It is difficult to change thought patterns to find a new path, and that is the primary reason I read The Great Wheel and encourage others to read it. ... To use a 1960's term, this is a heavy book. It is very deep, thorough and forces one to step back and start looking at the big picture. What aspect of your personality could use some help? This book has the tools to help you." - Peggy Mathias, Psychic-Magic magazine

Описание: From Colm Tibn, the formidable award-winning author of The Master and Brooklyn, an illuminating, intimate study of Irish culture, history, and literature told through the lives and work of three menWilliam Wilde, John Butler Yeats, and John Stanislaus Joyceand the complicated, influential relationships they had with their complicated sons.

Colm Tibn begins his incisive, revelatory Mad, Bad, Dangerous to Know with a walk through the Dublin streets where he went to universitya wide-eyed boy from the countryand where three Irish literary giants also came of age. Oscar Wilde, writing about his relationship with his father, William Wilde, stated: ';Whenever there is hatred between two people there is bond or brotherhood of some kindyou loathed each other not because you were so different but because you were so alike.' W.B. Yeats wrote of his father, John Butler Yeats, a painter: ';It is this infirmity of will which has prevented him from finishing his pictures.

The qualities I think necessary to success in art or life seemed to him egotism.' John Stanislaus Joyce, James's father, was perhaps the most quintessentially Irish, widely loved, garrulous, a singer, and drinker with a volatile temper, who drove his son from Ireland.

Elegant, profound, and riveting, Mad, Bad, Dangerous to Know illuminates not only the complex relationships between three of the greatest writers in the English language and their fathers, but also illustrates the surprising ways these men surface in their work. Through these stories of fathers and sons, Tibn recounts the resistance to English cultural domination, the birth of modern Irish cultural identity, and the extraordinary contributions of these complex and masterful authors.

Описание: Selections from William Butler Yeats' poetry revealing an autobiographical account of his sudden heart problem and severe depression. Both my father and I loved poetry; we quoted it to each other all the time.He had racks of it on his bookshelves and delighted in showing me the beauty and honesty of the mere arrangement of words. When I began to systematically read the later poetry of William Butler Yeats I was looking for the story of his extra-marital lover, a young Catholic woman who gave birth to his first beloved son. But she was murdered and he had to abandon his son. I found everything I was looking for right here in the poetry.
