They result from the failure of the materials which make up the hill slope and are driven by the force of gravity. Landslides are known also as landslips, slumps or slope failure. The downward force of a landslide can move slowly or quickly with disastrous effects. Landslides can be triggered by natural causes or by human activity. They range from a single boulder in a rock fall or topple to tens of millions of cubic metres of material in a debris flow. They can also vary in their extent, with some occurring very locally and impacting a very small area or hill slope while others affect much larger regional areas. The distance travelled by landslide material can also differ significantly with slides travelling from a few centimetres to many kilometres depending on the volume of material, water content and gradient of the slope. Landslides can even occur underwater, causing tidal waves and damage to coastal areas. These landslides are called submarine landslides. This book presents comprehensive overview of progress in landslide science, landslide dynamics, landslide monitoring, and landslide risk assessment. Such alternative strategies include the use of building codes, land use planning controls, preventing water leakage, early warning systems and insurance schemes. Fractal analysis is an up-to-date method of applying nontraditional mathematics to patterns that defy understanding with traditional Euclidean concepts. Fractal analysis is measuring fractal characteristics of data. It entails several methods to assign a fractal dimension and other fractal characteristics to a dataset which may be a theoretical dataset or a pattern or signal extracted from phenomena including natural geometric objects, sound, market fluctuations, heart rates, digital images, molecular motion, networks, etc. Fractal analysis is now widely used in all areas of science. An important limitation of fractal analysis is that arriving at an empirically determined fractal dimension does not necessarily prove that a pattern is fractal; rather, other essential characteristics have to be considered. Fractals are not necessarily physical forms -- they can be spatial or temporal patterns, as well. In general, fractals can be any type of infinitely scaled and repeated pattern. In this regard, it is important to be aware that theoretical fractals are abstractions, but the subjects of fractal analysis, such as digital images limited by screen resolution, are generally not true fractals in the strictest sense. Similarly, the so-called fractals typically found in nature are not substantially scaled, thus, like finite computer generated patterns, are generally only approximations to fractals in the strictest sense. This book places emphasis on recent applications of the fractal/mutifractal analysis in geosciences and will be an immense valuable tool for researchers and students from universities. Описание: Adhesive abilities of insects, spiders and reptiles have inspired researchers for a long time. All these organisms show outstanding performance, particularly for force, adhesion and climbing abilities, relative to their size and weight. Scientists have focused on the gecko’s adhesive paw system and climbing abilities. Its adhesion mechanism has been an important topic of research for nearly 150 years. However, certain phenomena of geckos are still not fully understood and represent today the main challenge in several scientific discussions that aim to better understand their adhesive ability. The manuscript deals with the influence of surface roughness on the gecko’s adhesion on the inverted surface of Poly(methyl meth-acrylate) (PMMA) and glass, of PMMA with different surface roughness, on the gecko’s maximum normal adhesive force. In general, the adhesive structure and mechanism of an animal could be connected to the micro-structured roughness of natural substrata (e.g. plant surfaces) in the natural environment. This manuscript focuses on the nanometer scale, which is involved in everything from gecko spatulae to the waxy nanotubules of the lotus leaf, to the fibroin protein materials that constitute spider silks. In general, spider silks display superior mechanical properties, but only in the last few decades, researchers investigated various types of silks and evaluated their very different mechanical properties. The dragline and the flag silks (or radial and circumferential) of orb weaving spiders have been characterized in scientific literature while, to our knowledge, few studies have been conducted on bundles, which connect the cocoons of Meta menardi to the ceiling of caves.
