Описание: An entirely fresh perspective on the history of photography that uses timelines to trace the medium`s development from its inception to the present.
On Photography traces the artistic and institutional decisions that have influenced the Camera Austria association. Since its founding in the mid-1970s as an association of Austrian photographers, the group has had an important place in the European photography world, putting on exhibitions and symposia on topics in photography and, since 1980, publishing the magazine Camera Austria International. Operating through a network of photographers, academics and art critics from all over the world, Camera Austria has come to function like a laboratory shaping photographic culture. At the center of the book are the photographers that Camera Austria has worked with, whether in exhibitions, at symposia or in the magazine--among them Robert Adams, Nobuyoshi Araki, Lewis Baltz, William Eggleston, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Seiichi Furuya, Luigi Ghirri, David Goldblatt, Nan Goldin, Zofia Kulik, Tatiana Lecomte, Susan Meiselas, Peter Piller, Walid Raad, Michael Schmidt, Allan Sekula, Ahlam Shibli, Lieko Shiga, Manfred Willmann and Tobias Zielony.
In the late nineteenth century and early twentieth, hundreds of amateur photographers took part in the photographic survey movement in England. They sought to record the material remains of the English past so that it might be preserved for future generations. In The Camera as Historian, the groundbreaking historical and visual anthropologist Elizabeth Edwards works with an archive of nearly 55,000 photographs taken by 1,000 photographers, mostly unknown until now. She approaches the survey movement and its social and material practices ethnographically. Considering how the amateur photographers understood the value of their project, Edwards links the surveys to concepts of leisure, understandings of the local and the national, and the rise of popular photography. Her examination of how the photographers negotiated between scientific objectivity and aesthetic responses to the past leads her to argue that the survey movement was as concerned with the conditions of its own modernity and the creation of an archive for an anticipated future as it was nostalgic about the imagined past. Including more than 120 vibrant images, The Camera as Historian offers new perspectives on the forces that shaped Victorian and Edwardian Britain, as well as on contemporary debates about cultural identity, nationality, empire, material practices, and art.
Audacious and genre-defying, Black and Blue is steeped in melancholy, in the feeling of being blue, or, rather, black and blue, with all the literality of bruised flesh. Roland Barthes and Marcel Proust are inspirations for and subjects of Carol Mavor's exquisite, image-filled rumination on efforts to capture fleeting moments and to comprehend the incomprehensible. At the book's heart are one book and three films—Roland Barthes's Camera Lucida, Chris Marker's La Jetée and Sans soleil, and Marguerite Duras's and Alain Resnais's Hiroshima mon amour—postwar French works that register disturbing truths about loss and regret, and violence and history, through aesthetic refinement.
Personal recollections punctuate Mavor's dazzling interpretations of these and many other works of art and criticism. Childhood memories become Proust's "small-scale contrivances," tiny sensations that open onto panoramas. Mavor's mother lost her memory to Alzheimer's, and Black and Blue is framed by the author's memories of her mother and effort to understand what it means to not be recognized by one to whom you were once so known.
