Published in 1779, this drill manual was written by Inspector General Friedrich Von Steuben as a method of standardizing best rules and practices for the Continental Army in the early days of the American Revolution. Von Steuben, a Prussian military officer, made a name for himself as a lieutenant in the Seven Years War and later as a personal aide to Frederick the Great. By the mid-1770s, Von Steuben had been discharged from the Prussian army and was in Paris seeking employment. His experience and military acumen earned the attention of Benjamin Franklin--who invited the Prussian officer to volunteer his services on behalf of the American cause. The book contains all of the rules for governing a successful militia, from the correct formation of a company or regiment, to the position of a solider under arms, the treatment of the sick, or the different beats of an army drum.
