Описание: New developments in Civil War scholarship owe much to removal of artificial divides by historians seeking to explore the connections between the home front and the battlefield. Indeed, scholars taking a holistic view of the war have contributed to our understanding of the social complexities of emancipation, of freedom in a white republic, and the multifaceted experiences of both civilians and soldiers. Given these accomplishments, research focusing on military history prompts prominent and recurring debates among Civil War historians. Critics of traditional military history see it as old-fashioned, too technical, or irrelevant to the most important aspects of the war. Proponents of this area of study view these criticisms as a misreading of its nature and potential to illuminate the war. The collected essays in Upon the Fields of Battle bridge this intellectual divide, demonstrating how historians enrich Civil War studies by approaching the period through the specific but nonetheless expansive lens of military history.Drawing together contributions from Keith Altavilla, Robert L. Glaze, John J. Hennessy, Earl J. Hess, Brian Matthew Jordan, Kevin M. Levin, Brian D. McKnight, Jennifer M. Murray, and Kenneth W. Noe, editors Andrew S. Bledsoe and Andrew F. Lang present an innovative volume that deeply integrates and analyses the ideas and practices of the military during the Civil War. Furthermore, by grounding this collection in both traditional and pioneering methodologies, the authors assess the impact of this field within the social, political, and cultural contexts of Civil War studies.Upon the Fields of Battle reconceives traditional approaches to subjects like battles and battlefields, practice and policy, command and culture, the environment, the home front, civilians and combatants, atrocity and memory, revealing a more balanced understanding of the military aspects of the Civil War's evolving history.

Описание: From the beginning of CHAPTER I. FIRST PRINCIPLES OF THE INFINITESIMAL METHOD - THE METHOD OF EXHAUSTION.The student of mathematics, on passing from the lower branches of the science to the infinitesimal analysis, finds himself in a strange and almost wholly foreign department of thought. He has not risen, by easy and gradual steps, from a lower into a higher, purer, and more beautiful region of scientific truth. On the contrary, he is painfully impressed with the conviction, that the continuity of the science has been broken, and its unity destroyed, by the influx of principles which arc as unintelligible as they are novel. He finds himself surrounded by enigmas and obscurities, which only serve to perplex his understanding and darken his aspirations after knowledge. That clearness of evidence, which is the boast of the mathematics, and which has hitherto cheered and stimulated his exertions, forsakes him as soon as he enters on the study of the infinitesimal calculus, and the darkness of doubt settles on his path. If, indeed, he does not abandon the study in disgust or despair, as thousand* have done, he pursues it for the sake of a diploma or a degree, or from some less worthy motive than the love of science' He certainly derives from it comparatively little advantage in the cultivation of his intellectual powers; because the dark and unintelligible processes he is required to perform scarcely demand a natural exercise of them. These disadvantages of the study are due, for the most part, to the manner in which the calculus is usually taught. In most elementary works on the differential calculus, the first principles of the science are not set forth at all, or else so imperfectly defined as to mislead the student from the clear path of mathematical science into a region of clouds and darkness. I have frequently made the experiment with some of the best of such works. I have more than once put them into the hands of a class of from ninety to a hundred students, among whom there Mere mathematical minds of no ordinary power, and required them to tell me what are the first principles of the infinitesimal method or calculus. Yet, after having read and mastered the first chapter, which, of course, contained a discussion of "First Principles," not one of them had acquired the least notion of what those principles are. Not one of them could even name the first principles of the science, much less define them. In this respect, the most capable and diligent members of the class were on a perfect level with the most stupid and indolent. Indeed, if the authors of the books themselves knew what the first principles of the calculus are, they were very careful not to unveil their knowledge.

Описание: Many songs have been told about the Good Folk of Celtic mythology, but Alex Bledsoe weaves fairy tales unlike any other all set in the mythic and southern gothic-tinged foothills of Appalachia. When Matt Johansson, a gay actor from New York, auditions for the off-Broadway musical, Chapel of Ease, he knows it is the opportunity of a lifetime - especially after he befriends the shows composer, Ray Parrish. Misfortune strikes, however, when Ray mysteriously dies just as the show reaches its peak buzz during previews. Taking Rays ashes home to Tennessee, Matt is determined to find closure and figure out the musicals core mystery what
The Truckee River is central to the survival of humanity that has long clustered around its banks. Yet it has often been treated as no more than a utilitarian asset to be used and abused as the whims of the time suggested. This book traces that history from the degradation caused by mining, lumbering, sewage, and water diversions to the present-day effort to preserve and restore this precious resource.
Herein also is the tale of the mighty floods that have repeatedly swept through, and our continual efforts to contain them--from the ugly and insufficient floodwall-levee-dredging approach up to the Living River plan with its natural river with broad floodplains and levee setbacks featuring open spaces for beauty and recreation. And then, alas, the plan's diminishment due to two decades of federal dithering and rising costs.
Finally, there is a plea to do better by the river while there is still time.
In 1960, at age 18, future bestselling author Jerry Bledsoe (Bitter Blood & The Angel Doll) told an Army recruiter that he wanted to be an artist. This was his lucky day, the recruiter informed him. The Army had the best art school in the world. But after being sworn in, Bledsoe was pulled aside by a major and informed that no Army art school existed. He was being assigned instead to Information School.
Although Bledsoe, who had flunked high school English for failure to write book reports and term papers, had no idea what this unexpected decision entailed, it would set the direction for the rest of his life.
Bledsoe limits this warm, deeply personal and often humorous memoir to the turbulent '60s, which he began as a psychological warfare writer in the early stages of the Vietnam War. His Army experiences led him to become a newspaper reporter and columnist, thrusting him into the major stories of the decade and leading him to meet and write about hundreds of remarkable and engaging people, including a relatively unknown musician named Jimi Hendrix who was opening for the Monkees, comedy legend Brother Dave Gardner, and civil rights leader Ben Elton Cox.
From moments of true Catch-22 absurdities in the Army to historic events of the civil rights movement, Do-Good Boy gives its readers an insider's view as a young author discovers his calling during a pivotal era.

Remodern America
How the Renewal of the Arts
Will Change the Course of Western Civilization
Art reminds us of who we are, and shows what we can be. But the visual arts are undergoing a crisis of relevance. Elitists have weaponized art into an assault on the foundations of our culture.
Art is a more enduring and vital human experience than the power games of a greedy and fraudulent ruling class. The story of the 21st Century will be the dismantling of centralized power. As always, this course of history was prophesied by artists--those who are intuitively aware of the path unfolding ahead. Their works become maps so that others may find the way. Enduring changes start in the arts.
Remodern America provides an historical overview of how art shapes society and politics. This book exposes how the contemporary art world is used as a tool of oppression. Most importantly, Remodern America provides the solution, and reveals how the power of art can be reclaimed as a force for liberty.

Описание: With the comic unpredictability of a Wes Anderson movie and the inventive sharpness of a John Irving novel, author Brock Clarke introduces listeners to an ordinary man who is about to embark on an absurdly extraordinary adventure. After his mother, a theologian and bestselling author, dies in a fiery explosion, forty-nine-year-old Calvin Bledsoe's heretofore uninspired life is upended. A stranger shows up at the funeral, claiming to be Calvin's aunt Beatrice, and insists that Calvin accompany her on a trip to Europe, immediately. As he and Beatrice traverse the continent, it quickly becomes apparent that his aunt's clandestine behavior is leading him into danger. Facing a comic menagerie of antiquities thieves, secret agents, religious fanatics, and an ex-wife who's stalking him, Calvin begins to suspect there might be some meaning behind the madness. Maybe he's not the person he thought he was? Perhaps no one is who they appear to be? But there's little time for soul-searching, as Calvin first has to figure out why he has been kidnapped, why his aunt disappeared, and who the hell burned down his house. Powered by pitch-perfect dialogue, lovable characters, and surprising optimism, Who Are You, Calvin Bledsoe? is a modern-day Travels with My Aunt, a novel about grabbing life, and holding on-wherever it may take you.
