Описание: From the PREFACE.LEST the title of this booklet be misunderstood, the author j must state that he here means by "Primer" a presentation of the subject in the plainest and most lucid form in which he could put it."The Primer of Philosophy" is not expressly designed to give instruction to beginners in philosophy, but it is, nevertheless, eminently available for that purpose. The uninitiated student will not be bewildered or mystified, in perusing its pages, by high-sounding words or unintelligible phrases, but will, despite this lack of learned adornment, find in them the information he desires. The subject is presented with great simplicity so that its leading idea can be gathered by a mere glance at its contents. The most essential technical terms are explained, and the high practical importance of philosophy is never lost sight of.The point of view adopted in this, as in other publications of the author, is new to the extent that it cannot be classified among any of the various schools of recent thought. It represents, rather, a critical reconciliation of rival philosophies of the type of Kantian apriorism and John Stuart Mill's empiricism. The reconciliation reached disposes for good of a number of fundamental problems, and, particularly, of that old "crux philosophorum, } the question of the nature of reason, and will, thus, after a long unsettled period of embarrassments in which all progress has ceased, set the ship of philosophy afloat again. For the philosophy of these latter days is indeed like a ship run aground. Her helmsmen themselves have declared that further headway is impossible; that philosophical problems in their very nature are insolvable, and that there can be, therefore, but one true philosophy-the philosophy of agnosticism, which indolently acquiesces in the profession of a modest "ignorabimus." It is but natural that under such circumstances the proud craft was abandoned by the most gallant of her crew. There was no work left for bold inquirers; there was no hope of accomplishing anything; the ship was fast, and her sailors were told to seek consolation in the idea that she had reached at last her haven, and that her present resting place, the belief in the Unknowable, was the stratified wisdom of all ages.Philosophy in former ages boldly led the van of human progress, but it has now ceased to be considered of any practical importance. The public smile sarcastically at the perplexities of its hopeless condition, and the scientist has got into the habit of ignoring it entirely. And why should he not? Philosophy has become more of a hindrance than a help to him, blockading his way and spreading a mist before his eyes. Thus, to the detriment of true science, the sciences have gradually degenerated into mere specialties; with their philosophical background, the various branches of scientific inquiry have lost all inter-coherence and deeper significance. All this must change; and if the spirit in which this book is written, be true, it will change.A new vista is opened before our eyes in which philosophy will become what it ought to be. Philosophy is no longer doomed to lie in the stagnant swamp where progress has become impossible, but strikes out boldly for new fields of noble work and practical usefulness.-The Author

Автор: Carus Paul Название: The Surd of Metaphysics: An Inquiry into the Question - Are There Things-in-Themselves? ISBN: 1698311850 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781698311852 Издательство: Неизвестно Цена: 11440.00 T Наличие на складе: Невозможна поставка. Описание: THE subject discussed in this book is one of the most important of the problems of philosophy, and it is not difficult to understand that in its application to real life it is of a paramount practical nature, not only in the domains of ethics and religion, but also in our general attitude toward the world and in our every-day doings. The idea of "things-in-themselves" originates as a natural phase in the evolution of human thought, and its formulation is as necessary as it is for certain purposes beneficial. In denouncing the belief in things-in-themselves as a superstition, we must therefore warn the student not to overlook the truth that is contained in it. For though there are no things-in-themselves, there are things, and, though it is not less wrong to hypostasize our ideas than it is to personify them in mythological figures, we must not regard them as flatus vocis only, as empty words, or mere names. For after all, they denote features of actual life which are real. And the concept of things-in-themselves underlies many other problems, where it is frequently so disguised as to be quite unrecognizable. For this reason it is not wise to deal with the subject off-hand, but to treat it in its connection with kindred questions in the domains of epistemology and metaphysics so called. Nor is it sufficient to state the solution only; it is also desirable to illustrate its importance by contrasting it with the views of philosophers that hold different opinions and still cling more or less to the antiquated belief in things-in-themselves.Modern thought appears negative to the followers of the old schools, but it has its positive aspects, and these positive aspects should be made prominent. In doing so we shall not only be just to the old schools, but also establish the claim of modern thought to its due share of influence upon the events of the world. When we recognise the Unknown, and also the infinitude of possible progress, we need no longer cling to the superstitious belief in the Unknowable. Further, when we understand that imagination, this child of sentiment and thought, has wings and that for all her erratic flights in the realm of fancy she now and then alights on a lofty crag in the ethereal realms of moral or religious aspiration to find there an important truth, which our slow-paced but sure-footed reason cannot as easily reach, we need neither insist upon the insufficiency and baseness of reason, nor extol the reliability of prophetic visions which are expressions of our religious instinct. In appreciating one faculty, we need not cast a slur upon the other. The relation between the circumference and the diameter of the circle is quite definite and concrete, but if expressed of a numerical fraction its value can only be approximated, admitting of an infinite progress in accuracy. So the world is determinable and science is reliable in spite of the fact that her work can never be finished, and however much we progress and advance in the solution of life's problem, we can never reach the end. But this condition of things is not depressive to a healthy mind. On the contrary, it is an elevating idea that the source of knowledge will never run dry, and that the waters of life are inexhaustible.
