Описание: Hallowed is a fresh study of the Lords Prayer against its Old Testament background. Rather than give an entirely new model for speaking with God, Jesus drew the message of his prayer from the Psalms, the ancient prayer book of Gods people. In the Psalms, believers approach God in worship, seek him for lifes necessities, confess their sins, and ask for his mercy. Echoing these prayerful voices, Jesus taught a profound lesson in what delights God when his people pray. From this we will learn how to hallow Gods name in prayer and all of life, and we will be encouraged with the Fathers promise that he always hears the voice of his children in Christ. Reuben Bredenhof has gifted the church with a book that weaves together all the personal vigor of the Psalms with the simplicity and majesty of the Lords Prayer. This book is filled with rich insights for the soul --Paul E. Miller, author of A Praying Life Reuben Bredenhof received his PhD from St Marys University, Twickenham. He is the pastor of the Mount Nasura Free Reformed Church in Western Australia, and the author of Wise: Living by the Ancient Words of the Commandments and Proverbs.

Описание:

Bredenhof analyses the parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man (Luke 16:19-31) by examining its functions as a narrative, considering its persuasiveness as a rhetorical unit, and situating it within a Graeco-Roman and Jewish intertextual conversation on the themes of wealth and poverty, and authoritative revelation. The parable portrays the consequences of the rich man's failure to respond to the suffering of Lazarus. Bredenhof argues that the parable offers its audience a prospect for alternative outcomes, in response both to poverty and to a person who has risen from the dead.

This prospect is particularly evident when the parable is read in anticipation of the ethical and theological concerns of Luke's second volume in Acts. Bredenhof asserts that reading within the context of Luke-Acts contributes to the understanding of Luke's purposes with this narrative. It is in Acts that his audience witnesses the parable's message about mercy being applied through charitable initiatives in the community of believers, while the Acts accounts of preaching and teaching demonstrate that a true reading of "Moses and the prophets" is inseparably joined to the believing acceptance of one risen from the dead. Through a re-reading of Luke 16:19-31 in its Luke-Acts context, its message is amplified and commended to the parable's audience for their response.

Описание:

In Aiming to Please, Wes Bredenhof explains in his unique, readable style, how Reformed worship aims to help us please God more and more. All aspects of the service come under scrutiny: Is singing hymns biblical? Should the congregation say the votum? Why collection bags? Lord's Supper in the pews? And what about the role of organists, drums, the celebration of Christmas, and the use of projectors? Does covenant theology make a difference to how we worship? These topics and many more are addressed from the stance that we are not to worship God in any other manner than he has commanded in his Word.
