See yourself as big and powerful as a matriarchal elephant ready to stomp on anything that is threatening to harm her and her herd. See yourself as brave as an Amazon warrior going into battle ready to defend to the death her beliefs and everything she loves. See yourself as determined as a gazelle not willing to be caught by a stalking predator looking for its next meal. You are all of these -- and more -- and you must believe deep inside yourself that this is who you are or who you intend to be. If the foregoing images don't resonate with you, find ones that embody your idea of courage, determination and strength. The journey will not be easy, but I promise you that every pain will be worth it.
My fervent hope is that by sharing my experiences with you, and the inspirational stories of other women, you will glean some insights into what to look for in an abusive relationship. As you read, try to uncover, also, the unconsciously-held limiting beliefs and betrayals that were the invisible chains keeping the women bound to their captors, and their need, albeit unconscious, to reenact the same old stories.
My primary goal in writing this book is to expand the conversation and raise awareness about the insidious nature of emotional abuse and the devastating impact it can have on women. By picking up and reading this book and the stories of other women just like yourself, you will recognize that you are not alone; that there is life after abuse; that you can reinvent yourself; and that you can thrive in spite of everything that has happened to you in the past. I also hope that those of you who read this book will take the time to examine your relationships and determine whether or not, somewhere deep inside, something needs to change. The late English author, George Eliot (1819 - 1880) said, "It is never too late to be what you might have been"more than a century ago. They are as poignant and true for those who want to realize their potential today as they were for those who lived during her lifetime.
