Описание:

Published posthumously in 1864 and based on Henry David Thoreaus lengthy experiences in the forests of Maine on three separate occasions in 1846, 1853, and 1857, The Maine Woods is a captivating portrait of the largely unexplored region in the mid-1800s. Rich with the naturalistic detail that is common with Thoreaus writing, readers will delight in the exquisiteness with which Thoreau relates his experiences in nature. He took constant note of all that was around him: the native people and their languages, the loggers and their harsh work, the rivers, streams, woods, and abundant wildlife. Thoreau was insistent on experiencing all that the woods had to offer and spent his time climbing peaks, paddling canoes, trying local foods, and observing the details all around him. While Thoreau captures the beauty and uniqueness of his physical environment, these journeys into the woods were also deeply personal. He becomes more thoughtful and gains a better understanding of his own weaknesses and frailties and also reaffirms his deep passion and love for the natural world in its unspoiled state. The Maine Woods is a classic work of adventure and discovery that will enchant nature enthusiasts. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

Описание: Henry David Thoreau reflects on life, politics, and society in these two inspiring masterworks: Walden and Civil Disobedience.

In 1845, Thoreau moved to a cabin that he built with his own hands along the shores of Walden Pond in Massachusetts. Shedding the trivial ties that he felt bound much of humanity, Thoreau reaped from the land both physically and mentally, and pursued truth in the quiet of nature. In Walden, he explains how separating oneself from the world of men can truly awaken the sleeping self. Thoreau holds fast to the notion that you have not truly existed until you adopt such a lifestyle--and only then can you reenter society, as an enlightened being.

These simple but profound musings--as well as "Civil Disobedience," his protest against the government's interference with civil liberty--have inspired many to embrace his philosophy of individualism and love of nature. More than a century and a half later, his message is more timely than ever.

With an Introduction by W.S. Merwin
and an Afterword by Will Howarth

Описание: Walking/ Wild Apples is a classic collectio of two great Henry David Thoreau works that features the following Thoreau quote: I wish to speak a word for Nature, for absolute freedom and wildness, as contrasted with a freedom and culture merely civil, -to regard man as an inhabitant, or a part and parcel of Nature, rather than a member of society. I wish to make an extreme statement, if so I may make an emphatic one, for there are enough champions of civilization: the minister, and the school-committee, and every one of you will take care of that. I have met with but one or two persons in the course of my life who understood the art of Walking, that is, of taking walks, -who had a genius, so to speak, for sauntering: which word is beautifully derived "from idle people who roved about the country, in the Middle Ages, and asked charity, under pretense of going la Sainte Terre," to the Holy Land, till the children exclaimed, "There goes a Sainte-Terrer," a Saunterer, -a Holy-Lander. They who never go to the Holy Land in their walks, as they pretend, are indeed mere idlers and vagabonds; but they who do go there are saunterers in the good sense, such as I mean. Some, however, would derive the word from sans terre, without land or a home, which, therefore, in the good sense, will mean, having no particular home, but equally at home everywhere. For this is the secret of successful sauntering. He who sits still in a house all the time may be the greatest vagrant of all; but the saunterer, in the good sense, is no more vagrant than the meandering river, which is all the while sedulously seeking the shortest course to the sea. But I prefer the first, which, indeed, is the most probable derivation. For every walk is a sort of crusade, preached by some Peter the Hermit in us, to go forth and reconquer this Holy Land from the hands of the Infidels.

Описание:

Henry Thoreau is widely considered to be one of the greatest nature writers, among whose best-known works are Walden and Walking. In this book, Lester Hunt shows that his writings have a compelling philosophical dimension as well.

Thoreau seldom argues for his ideas the way other philosophers do. Rather than setting up proofs designed to trap the reader into agreeing with him, he challenges the reader - by means of narratives, jokes, questions, and paradoxes -- to recognize possibilities previously unknown and unexplored.

Thoreau's own explorations led him to several distinctively philosophical theories: an intuitionist metaethics, an ethics based on virtue and self-realization, a politics that is fundamentally individualist and anarchist, and a secular religion in which nature is pre-eminent.
