Описание:

THE RED FAIRY BOOK- A BOOK THAT INSPIRED TOLKIEN. With original illustrations.

'I have been a lover of fairy stories since I learned to read, ' Professor J.R.R. Tolkien once stated. 'The Red Fairy Book' was one of Tolkien's favorites. Fantasy and medieval literature specialist Douglas A. Anderson asserted, 'As a child Tolkien found delight in the variously colored fairy tale books of Andrew Lang. Especially he enjoyed "The Red Fairy Book", for it contained Lang's retelling of one of the greatest dragon stories in northern literature, that of Fafnir from the "Volsung Saga."' Dart-Thornton's introduction sheds more light on Tolkien's connection with 'The Red Fairy Book' and its editor, Andrew Lang. 'The Red Fairy Book' was illustrated by H.J. Ford and Lancelot Speed. As a child, and later as an adult, Tolkien was exposed to these pictures as he leafed through the pages of the fairy tales. Consciously or unconsciously, he came under their spell. More than 100 drawings adorned the pages of the original 1890 edition. This is a close replica of that edition, with every illustration and embellishment included. Twenty-first century readers are able to enjoy the pictures as young Tolkien would have enjoyed them. This gorgeously illustrated book was a source of immense joy to Tolkien as he was growing up, and contributed to his conception of 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings'.

Описание: This charming early work, first published in 1907, is the eleventh book in a series of twelve 'coloured' fairy books published by Andrew Lang between 1889 and 1910. Each volume is distinguished by its own colour, and all in all, 437 tales from a wide array of cultures and countries are presented. The Olive Fairy Book is illustrated with numerous black and white illustrations by the master artist H.J. Ford. This book is thoroughly recommended for inclusion on the shelf of all folklorists and lovers of fairy tales. A delightful read for both adult and child. It includes 30 unusual stories from Turkey, India, Denmark, Armenia, and Sudan. Tales include: Geirlug The King's Daughter, Jackal or Tiger?, Diamond Cut Diamond, The Five Wise Words of the Guru, The Snake Prince, The Clever Weaver and many more. Andrew Lang (1844 - 1912) was a Scots poet, novelist and literary critic, with a passion for folkloric storytelling. Most of his volumes (including this, 'The Olive Fairy Book') were beautifully illustrated by Henry J. Ford (1860 - 1941), an inordinately talented artist who came to public attention with his illustrations for Lang. The books captured the imagination of British children and later became worldwide bestsellers in the 1880s and 1890s.

Описание:

This is Andrew Lang's 1898 English-language translation of "One Thousand and One Nights", a collection of South Asian and Middle Eastern folk tales compiled during the Islamic Golden Age. It was anthologised over hundreds of years by a variety of scholars, authors, and translators across Asia and North Africa, with the stories having roots in medieval Persian, Arabic, Mesopotamian, Jewish, Indian, and Egyptian folklore. Beautifully illustrated by H. J. Ford, this classic collection is ideal for bedtime reading material and not to be missed by lovers of folklore. Andrew Lang (1844 - 1912) was a Scottish novelist, poet, literary critic, and anthropologist, most famous as a significant collector of folk stories and fairy tales. Other notable works by this author include: "The Green Fairy Book" (1892), "The Yellow Fairy Book" (1894), and "The Pink Fairy Book" (1897). The stories include: "The Story of the Merchant and the Genius", "Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp", "The Enchanted Horse", "The Little Hunchback", "Story of the Blind Baba-Abdalla", "The Story of Ali Cogia, Merchant of Bagdad", "The Story of the Vizir who was Punished", "The Story of the Husband and the Parrot", and many more. Pook Press celebrates the great 'Golden Age of Illustration' in children's literature - a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage classic illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.

Описание: When this book first appeared (1886), the philological school of interpretation of religion and myth, being then still powerful in England, was criticised and opposed by the author. In Science, as on the Turkish throne of old, "Amurath to Amurath succeeds"; the philological theories of religion and myth have now yielded to anthropological methods. The centre of the anthropological position was the "ghost theory" of Mr. Herbert Spencer, the "Animistic" theory of Mr. E. R. Tylor, according to whom the propitiation of ancestral and other spirits leads to polytheism, and thence to monotheism. In the second edition (1901) of this work the author argued that the belief in a "relatively supreme being," anthropomorphic was as old as, and might be even older, than animistic religion. This theory he exhibited at greater length, and with a larger collection of evidence, in his Making of Religion. Since 1901, a great deal of fresh testimony as to what Mr. Howitt styles the "All Father" in savage and barbaric religions has accrued. As regards this being in Africa, the reader may consult the volumes of the New Series of the Journal of the Anthropological Institute, which are full of African evidence, not, as yet, discussed, to my knowledge, by any writer on the History of Religion. As late as Man, for July, 1906, No. 66, Mr. Parkinson published interesting Yoruba legends about Oleron, the maker and father of men, and Oro, the Master of the Bull Roarer.
