WINNER OF THE NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD, THE LOS ANGELES TIMES BOOK PRIZE, THE MARK LYNTON HISTORY PRIZE, THE AMERICAN HISTORY BOOK PRIZE

Book Four of Robert A. Caro's monumentalThe Years of Lyndon Johnsondisplays all the narrative energy and illuminating insight that led theTimesof London to acclaim it as ';one of the truly great political biographies of the modern age. A masterpiece.'

The Passage of Powerfollows Lyndon Johnson through both the most frustrating and the most triumphant periods of his career1958 to1964.

It is a time that would see him trade the extraordinary power he had created for himself as Senate Majority Leader for what became the wretched powerlessness of a Vice President in an administration that disdained and distrusted him. Yet it was, as well, the time in which the presidency, the goal he had always pursued, would be thrust upon him in the moment it took an assassin's bullet to reach its mark.

By 1958, as Johnson began to maneuver for the presidency, he was known as one of the most brilliant politicians of his time, the greatest Senate Leader in our history. But the 1960 nomination would go to the young senator from Massachusetts, John F.

Kennedy. Caro gives us an unparalleled account of the machinations behind both the nomination and Kennedy's decision to offer Johnson the vice presidency, revealing the extent of Robert Kennedy's efforts to force Johnson off the ticket. With the consummate skill of a master storyteller, he exposes the savage animosity between Johnson and Kennedy's younger brother, portraying one of America's great political feuds.

Yet Robert Kennedy's overt contempt for Johnson was only part of the burden of humiliation and isolation he bore as Vice President. With a singular understanding of Johnson's heart and mind, Caro describes what it was like for this mighty politician to find himself altogether powerless in a world in which power is the crucial commodity.

For the first time, in Caro's breathtakingly vivid narrative, we see the Kennedy assassination through Lyndon Johnson's eyes. We watch Johnson step into the presidency, inheriting a staff fiercely loyal to his slain predecessor; a Congress determined to retain its power over the executive branch; and a nation in shock and mourning.

We see how within weeksgrasping the reins of the presidency with supreme masteryhe propels through Congress essential legislation that at the time of Kennedy's death seemed hopelessly logjammed and seizes on a dormant Kennedy program to create the revolutionary War on Poverty. Caro makes clear how the political genius with which Johnson had ruled the Senate now enabled him to make the presidency wholly his own. This was without doubt Johnson's finest hour, before his aspirations and accomplishments were overshadowed and eroded by the trap of Vietnam.

In its exploration of this pivotal period in Johnson's lifeand in the life of the nationThe Passage of Poweris not only the story of how he surmounted unprecedented obstacles in order to fulfill the highest purpose of the presidency but is, as well, a revelation of both the pragmatic potential in the presidency and what can be accomplished when the chief executive has the vision and determination to move beyond the pragmatic and initiate programs designed to transform a nation.

It is an epic story told with a depth of detail possible only through the peerless research that forms the foundation of Robert Caro's work, confirming Nicholas von Hoffman's verdict that ';Caro has changed the art of political biography.'

About the Authors

Merritt Lyndon Fernald (1873-1950) was a legendary American botanist. Based at Harvard University, he published more than 850 scientific papers and wrote and edited the seventh and eighth editions of Gray's Manual of Botany, long the standard flora of the region. As evident in this book, he also had an deep interest in wild food plants, and made many experiments with plants to determine their edibility and how best to prepare them.

Alfred Charles Kinsey (1894-1956) was an American biologist and professor of entomology and zoology at Indiana University, but perhaps most remembered as the founder, in 1947, of the Institute for Sex Research at Indiana University, now known as the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction.

Steve Chadde (1955- ) is a botanist and plant ecologist who developed a passion for the natural world at an early age. His grandparents, German immigrants to the United States, were avid gardeners, and provided him with many memories of picking fresh fruit and garden vegetables as part of healthy, delicious meals. Later, in addition to his education and professional work as a botanist, he continued to expand on his knowledge of plants and their many uses. He has published numerous books on plants, including his recent state floras for Minnesota (2013), Wisconsin (2013), and for the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (2014). He is pleased to make this landmark work on edible plants once again available to a new generation.

Описание: The conventional narrative of MLK's assassination is an FBI and CIA disinformation tactic. Find the proof here.

One of the most infamous and devastating assassinations in American history, the murder of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., was also one of the most quickly resolved by authorities: James Earl Ray was convicted of the crime less than a year after it occurred. Yet, did they catch the right person? Or was Ray framed by President Lyndon B. Johnson and FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover?

In Who REALLY Killed Martin Luther King, Jr.?, Phillip F. Nelson explores the tactics used by the FBI to portray Ray as a southern racist and stalker of King. He shows that early books on King's death were written for the very purpose of "dis-informing" the American public, at the behest of the FBI and CIA, and are filled with proven lies and distortions.

As Nelson methodically exposes the original constructed false narrative as the massive deceit that it was, he presents a revised and corrected account in its place, based upon proven facts that exonerate James Earl Ray. Nelson's account is supplemented by several authors, including Harold Weisberg, Mark Lane, Dick Gregory, John Avery Emison, Philip Melanson, and William F. Pepper. Nelson also posits numerous instances of how government investigators--the FBI originally, then the Department of Justice in 1976, the House Select Committee on Assassinations investigators in 1978 and the DOJ again in 2000--deliberately avoided pursuing any and all leads which pointed toward Ray's innocence.

This updated paperback edition now includes a foreword from LBJ researcher Edgar F. Tatro, an educator, author, and participator in the House Select Committee on Assassinations who is among the first generation of JFK researchers. His unique insights into what he refers to as the "Texas connection" are an invaluable resource to anyone wishing to understand the full dimensions of the conspiracy behind the JFK assassination.

Описание:

Lizzie Holmes's 1893 novel Hagar Lyndon was way ahead of its time. Radical, even. The novel tells the story of a young woman who refuses to conform to 19th century gender norms. After observing the effects of domestic abuse on her mother and older sister, Hagar Lyndon decides she does not want to marry. She does want to be a mother, however. Hagar's choice to live as an unwed mother forms the central dramatic conflict of the novel, as she learns that freedom comes at a cost and tradition is a vicious beast to slay. Originally serialized in the tiny anarchic newspaper Lucifer the Light-Bearer (published out of Kansas), this is the first time the novel has been published in book form and made available to a wider audience.
