Описание: Rosmersholm is a play written in 1886 by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen.The play opens one year after the suicide of Rosmer's wife, Beata. Rebecca had previously moved into the family home, Rosmersholm, as a friend of Beata, and she lives there still. It becomes plain that she and Rosmer are in love, but he insists throughout the play that their relationship is completely platonic.A highly respected member of his community, Rosmer intends to support the newly elected government and its reformist, if not revolutionary, agenda. However, when he announces this to his friend and brother-in-law Kroll, the local schoolmaster, the latter becomes enraged at what he sees as his friend's betrayal of his ruling-class roots. Kroll begins to sabotage Rosmer's plans, confronting him about his relationship with Rebecca and denouncing the pair, initially in guarded terms, in the local newspaper. Rosmer becomes consumed by his guilt, now believing he, rather than mental illness, caused his wife's suicide. He attempts to escape the guilt by erasing the memory of his wife and proposing marriage to Rebecca. But she rejects him outright. Kroll accuses her of using Rosmer as a tool to work her own political agenda. She admits that it was she who drove Mrs. Rosmer to deeper depths of despair and in a way even encouraged her suicide-initially to increase her power over Rosmer, but later because she actually fell in love with him. Because of her guilty past she cannot accept Rosmer's marriage proposal.This leads to the ultimate breakdown in the play where neither Rosmer nor Rebecca can cast off moral guilt: she has acknowledged her part in the destruction of Beata but she has also committed incest with her supposedly adoptive father while suspecting that he was in truth her natural parent. Her suspicion is harshly confirmed by Kroll when he attempts to come between her and Rosmer; they can now no longer trust each other, or even themselves. Rosmer then asks Rebecca to prove her devotion to him by committing suicide the same way his former wife did-by jumping into the mill-race. As Rebecca calmly seems to agree, issuing instructions about the recovery of her body from the water, Rosmer says he will join her. He is still in love with her and, since he cannot conceive of a way in which they can live together, they will die together. The play concludes with both characters jumping into the mill-race and the housekeeper, Mrs. Helseth, screaming in terror: "The dead woman has taken them."A radio adaptation, translated by Frank McGuinness and directed by Peter Kavanagh, was broadcast on BBC Radio 3 on 15 January 2017.

Описание: The Pillars of Society (Samfundets Stotter) is an 1877 play written by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen.Ibsen first planned a contemporary drama at the end of 1869 but did not begin the writing until October 1875 (in Munich), completing it in the summer of 1877. It was first published on 11 October of that year in Copenhagen, with the first stagings following on 14 November at the Odense Teater and on 18 November at the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen. The first performance in Norway was at Den Nationale Scene in Bergen on 30 November. By this date, the play had been translated into German, in which it was immediately well received. In December 1880 in London it became the first of any of Ibsen's plays to be performed in English (under the title Quicksands).Pillars of Society found a readier home on the stage, not only in Ibsen's own country but in others. From his retreat in Italy he had (in the years intervening between The Pretenders and this play) sent Brand and Peer Gynt to astonish and delight his fellow-countrymen and to lay the foundations of a wider fame. Pillars of Society was first produced in Copenhagen in 1877, and soon became an established favourite in the theatres of the other Scandinavian countries and of Germany. One or two isolated performances of it have been given in this country, also in America and in France. Mr. William Archer, in an interesting introduction to his version of the play, points out that the reason why, except in Scandinavia and Germany, it has nowhere taken a permanent hold upon the theatre, is easy to find; for, " by the time the English, American and French public had fully awakened to the existence of Ibsen, he himself had so far outgrown the phase of his development marked by Pillars of Society, that the play already seemed commonplace and old-fashioned." However that may be, the play has great interest to the student of Ibsen from the fact of its being its author's first serious effort in the social drama, and his first experiment with methods which he subsequently perfected. It is an entertaining play, moreover, with a plot that is a model of ingenuity; and, though the "irony" of the drama may occasionally come a little too pat, it is at the same time undeniably effective. No doubt, too, the later Ibsen would not have allowed the guilty man to escape Nemesis to so great an extent, but would have let it swoop remorselessly upon him; but, at the time the play was written, such a thing would have irretrievably have ruined its chances of success even if, indeed, it would have suggested itself to Ibsen at that stage of his development.
